[00:00:08] Speaker A: Yeah, I know Scarlet and. I know Scarlet and Snake Eyes didn't get married because I hate Duke. [00:00:14] Speaker B: That's right. And she married and he marries Lady J. [00:00:18] Speaker A: No, Duke is like the Cyclops equivalent. Duke is the Cyclops equivalent. Duke is. Yeah. He did not marry Lady J. Like that. No, no, stop that. That's Flint. [00:00:29] Speaker B: I know. [00:00:29] Speaker C: That was one thing that always bugged me about the cartoon was the cartoon had Duke and Scarlett together. And I'm like, no, that's wrong. She's with naked guys. [00:00:39] Speaker A: That can't. That can't be right either. No, they just missions together or something. Oh, by the way, welcome to Funny Book Forensics. [00:00:49] Speaker C: Hey, y'. All. [00:00:50] Speaker A: Hey. We're here with Brian Sheridan. [00:00:53] Speaker C: What? Thank you, guys. [00:00:55] Speaker A: Greg just invites people. [00:00:57] Speaker B: Yeah, I know. [00:00:57] Speaker A: I mean, Greg just invites people and they show up. It's amazing. [00:01:00] Speaker B: It's fun. I try. I try. [00:01:04] Speaker C: How could I not? Mario Madness. Like wallpaper. [00:01:08] Speaker A: That's fair. [00:01:09] Speaker B: I know. For those who are not better than the seeing this, you know you're missing out. Watch the YouTube. [00:01:15] Speaker C: Yes. [00:01:16] Speaker A: It's better than the Ugly bookshelf. I mean, with all the comics on it. [00:01:19] Speaker B: Well, mine's. [00:01:20] Speaker C: Mine's like, over here. Those are all of my. [00:01:24] Speaker A: There we go. Brian, you do things with comics or something? [00:01:28] Speaker C: I do. I am currently kickstarting my very first book. It's called Nighthawks. It is a detective noir story set in New York City, 1951. It's my love letter to the genre. I love noir books. So growing up, know one of my all time favorite things to watch was like, the original Blade Runner with the narration, because the narration makes it. And then when Sin City came out, the captions, the voiceovers, all of that kind of just. I loved it. And it was during COVID during the pandemic in lockdown. I really got into Edward Hopper. Nighthawks is my all time favorite painting. And I started looking at more of his artwork and just really fell in love with it. But with Nighthawks in particular, I started asking myself, just who are the people in this painting? What are they doing there? [00:02:20] Speaker B: What. [00:02:21] Speaker C: What time is it? Do they know each other? All that and I was on a big detective noir movie kick. I just watched like, Double Indemnity. [00:02:32] Speaker A: Ooh, yeah, right? [00:02:34] Speaker C: Classic. [00:02:35] Speaker A: Wait, wait, pause, pause. Double Indemnity. Wait, was that the one that Angela Lansbury was in? [00:02:42] Speaker C: No, you might be thinking of Gaslight. [00:02:46] Speaker A: I'm thinking of Gaslight. That was my bad. [00:02:48] Speaker C: And Angelo was sexy as hell in Gaslight. Like, oh, my God. [00:02:54] Speaker A: I was thinking Gaslight. But Both. [00:02:56] Speaker B: Both. [00:02:57] Speaker C: Double indemnity is Fred McMurray, which is really weird to see because he's not a good person. Like, spoiler alert. He's. He's not a good person. And after seeing him. [00:03:07] Speaker A: That's your favorite daddy. [00:03:09] Speaker C: Unlimited reruns of My Three Sons on Nick at night. Like, seeing him in that blew my mind. But anyway, yeah, I sat down and started writing. And then it took me years to find an artist, because artists cost money. And when I finally was able to pay an artist, I found Matthias, who is phenomenal. [00:03:34] Speaker A: Travis is calling us. Travis is calling. [00:03:36] Speaker B: Of course. Of course. [00:03:38] Speaker C: But, yeah, Matisse. I saw his sample pages, found him through, like, a Facebook group, and he was doing amazing things with light and shadow. All of his work was black and white. He had the lines that I liked and the style that I wanted, because in a perfect world, if I had unlimited money, I would have just called Mike Oming and said, here. Here's a bucket of money. Make my detective noir comic. Because I recognized him primarily from Powers and Dick Tracy. But Matthias is great in his own right. He's awesome. Loved his work. And then I found Valentine Barker for the covers, and I told him this is all based on Edward Hopper works. Every chapter in the books, every issue is named after a different Edward Hopper painting. So I'm really looking for something with that kind of look and feel to it for the covers. And Valentine delivered, like, above and beyond. Just. Absolutely. So we got our first Kickstarter right now. Super excited. [00:04:38] Speaker A: If you had told me you were getting Valentine Barker for the COVID of a noir book, I would have really been confused. Yes. But then you explained it, and you were like, oh, yeah, I got this guy, and he's amazing. And I'm like, yeah, I. I mean. And I'm gonna. I'm gonna show everybody really quickly why this may not end up sharing, but this is something I'm gonna have to share. So this is not the person. [00:05:06] Speaker C: No. [00:05:07] Speaker A: I would have thought would end up [00:05:10] Speaker B: as noir at all. [00:05:13] Speaker A: Nope, I. I am now super is to see these covers, because that's going to be great. [00:05:20] Speaker C: Yeah. The first cover, if you go to the Kickstarter page, I think I sent you the link. If you check that out, that first cover is 100% helper. And it just blew my mind. As soon as he's heading over, I was like, this is perfect. I need to pay you more money. [00:05:36] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, that is. That is so cool. [00:05:38] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:05:40] Speaker C: So, yeah, also just a huge comics fan. I've been buying Greg's comics For a while. [00:05:47] Speaker A: You buy Greg's comics? [00:05:48] Speaker C: I mean, I bought Junior Braves of the Apocalypse. [00:05:52] Speaker A: Does that make sense? [00:05:53] Speaker C: I'm still waiting for book three, Gray. [00:05:56] Speaker B: Well, you know, there's. There's good news on the horizon. Mike and I are. Are working on that diligently, so, you know, you're. [00:06:04] Speaker A: What? [00:06:04] Speaker B: We're working. Is there a scoop? [00:06:06] Speaker A: Is. There is. [00:06:07] Speaker B: There's no scoop. [00:06:08] Speaker A: There's no scooping to tell us. [00:06:09] Speaker B: No scoop to tell. [00:06:10] Speaker A: I am an esteemed member of the conference media. [00:06:12] Speaker B: I know, Dan. I know. There's no. There's no scoop to tell at the moment. There's just. Just the knowledge that we're working. [00:06:20] Speaker A: The scoop is going to end up in a top 10 list on CBR or some like that. It's not even gonna make it here. [00:06:26] Speaker B: Oh, my God. That would be that scoop. Scoopers. [00:06:30] Speaker A: See? No, it'll be. What are the top 10, top 10 indie books that we want to see again? [00:06:37] Speaker C: Most anticipated indie returns. [00:06:39] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:06:40] Speaker A: Number one, Scott Pilgrim, [00:06:44] Speaker B: this time in a different color. [00:06:47] Speaker C: I just. [00:06:50] Speaker A: I expected a quick, snappy comeback. And both of you paused. Like, I. I didn't cuss all week last week. You both paused like you did. But, you know, that's what they would do. [00:07:03] Speaker B: I. I mean. [00:07:05] Speaker C: I mean, it's cbr. Yeah. I. I can't. That Mutant Ninja Turtles. [00:07:11] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:07:14] Speaker C: Are they gonna keep burying, like, the last ronin into the ground? Just ride that train to death? [00:07:20] Speaker B: Maybe. [00:07:22] Speaker A: Well, we have a question for you. [00:07:23] Speaker C: Okay. [00:07:25] Speaker A: We also are in love with a. A particular noir book called Nathaniel Dusk that we reviewed on the podcast. So is it going to be better? [00:07:36] Speaker C: Oh. [00:07:36] Speaker A: Oh, yes. [00:07:37] Speaker C: Nathaniel. [00:07:41] Speaker A: Writer named Don McGregor, who wrote for Marvel and DC, got Gene Colon to draw for him in the 80s. It is fun stuff. [00:07:50] Speaker C: Nathaniel Dusk. I'm writing that down right now. [00:07:53] Speaker A: There's a. There's a two miniseries. [00:07:55] Speaker B: There's. [00:07:55] Speaker A: There's two miniseries. [00:07:57] Speaker C: Okay. [00:07:58] Speaker B: It's worth the read. It's definitely something that I'm going to go back to and check out again because it was. It was one of those things where you read it and you're like, okay, this is really good. Wait, there's more. [00:08:11] Speaker A: And it came out in a really weird time. It came out in 1984, and they ran it as a direct sale, like they were running Legion and Teen Titans and Outsiders, and so it wasn't on the newsstand, so they could get a little darker with it. [00:08:27] Speaker C: All right. [00:08:28] Speaker A: I'm looking at it, and I think. [00:08:29] Speaker C: And it looks good. [00:08:32] Speaker A: Yeah, it was. It was good. I think it was D.C. also sort of trying to compete with first and, you know, put out an indie feel book, which they did not do successfully competing with first. But yeah, I mean, obviously they won. But yeah, I don't think anybody would saying that the book, their indie books at that time were better than American Flag or John Zabel. [00:08:54] Speaker C: Oh, yeah, for sure. [00:08:57] Speaker A: But yeah. Anyway, it all ties back to 1984 and through 86, but because we're going to be there in a minute, we're going to be going. We're going to 1984. [00:09:07] Speaker C: Yes, we are. [00:09:08] Speaker B: 1984. It's wild times. [00:09:12] Speaker C: A truly great year. [00:09:13] Speaker A: That was a year right in line. We're going to a film noir book too, right? [00:09:18] Speaker C: Yes. [00:09:19] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. Actually, I mean. [00:09:23] Speaker A: Oh, wait, before we pivot. Before we pivot, before we pivot to this. [00:09:26] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:27] Speaker A: The shadow. [00:09:29] Speaker C: Oh, nice. [00:09:32] Speaker B: The dog. [00:09:33] Speaker A: The shadow. [00:09:33] Speaker B: Or no. [00:09:35] Speaker A: Brian, have you ever just. Have you ever just spent some time listening to those radio serials? [00:09:40] Speaker C: Not in a long time. I did years ago because when the movie came out, I wanted to know more. And I remember there was a public access radio show. I lived in Everett, just north of Seattle, and I think it was like KCTS9 or like 1 of the public broadcast stations did play some of the radio shows. And so I listened to, you know, not a ton, but I do remember listening to them. And those, those absolutely contributed to my love of noir and that style. And years ago, before I got into trying to create comics, I had thought about doing a podcast that would be a, like, like a narrative old timey ring and just never got around to it. So that's my own fan, my own fault for never doing it because I always loved seeing the videos behind the scenes of a guy with like shoes on his hands doing the. Oh, yeah, and it's flaming the door behind him and doing all that ADR sound effects. [00:10:46] Speaker A: Yeah, I had an instructor that did that. I caught one of my college instructors did voices on Old Time Radio. And yeah, it's, it's, it's, it's a, it's a cool thing. [00:11:01] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:11:02] Speaker A: And it gives you a lot of range. [00:11:04] Speaker C: Oh, that. Doing the live sound effects and VR stuff. [00:11:07] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. [00:11:08] Speaker C: I was in. A friend of mine years ago was doing a staged reading of War of the Worlds and I got to do the sound effects. So I was on the side of the stage while all the actors were on stage in front of microphones. And yeah, I'd run over to the side of the stage and like grab a bottle and hit it with Two sticks and cracking things. Yeah. [00:11:32] Speaker A: Before I steer us so far away from what we're going to talk about, but I know I got to see Nancy Cartwright give a speech. She gave a speech at a national debate competition and because she was in forensics when she was in college, but she got her start on radio doing voices and noise stuff. And, and she was telling you about that and how, how much it helped her. Right. Develop, develop the muscle for it. Right. [00:12:00] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:12:00] Speaker C: I mean, like anything else. [00:12:01] Speaker A: And she was awesome. And she's like this tall. Which you're like, how does, how does so much range come out of this human? Right? Like, it's just like, yeah. It's truly a truly amazing experience. [00:12:16] Speaker B: Well, I mean, you know, the best things come in small packages. That's fair. [00:12:20] Speaker C: That's true. [00:12:21] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:12:21] Speaker C: That's true. [00:12:23] Speaker A: But I did okay. I promised to get us back, so why, what are we talking about, Brian? So I can't blame this one on Greg. [00:12:30] Speaker C: I wanted to talk about. I have my 40th anniversary special edition here, but GI Joe issue number 21. [00:12:37] Speaker B: Ah, yes. [00:12:38] Speaker C: A truly legendary landmark issue in comics, if I may go so far and be so bold, because it was. [00:12:48] Speaker B: Oh yeah, Dan is pulling up the [00:12:50] Speaker C: J. I have that. It's, it's back, it's back there. [00:12:54] Speaker A: Except Greg is going to put us both to shame. [00:12:56] Speaker B: No, I'm too lazy, everybody. I didn't want to get into the long box in the closet and pull it out. I know. Plus, you told me not to get it out because you told me it was too delicate to get out of the box to pull it out. [00:13:08] Speaker A: And then I told, then you told [00:13:10] Speaker B: me last night to do it and then I had to, then I had a very long day and I just literally got home and I just, I was like, I'm, you know what? I'm just gonna log in and jump on after, you know, three o' clock this morning. I just said, you know what? I, I, I, I'm just gonna indeed. I know it's a long day. [00:13:28] Speaker A: I just said, you know what? [00:13:29] Speaker B: You know I have the book. I know it's there. [00:13:33] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:13:34] Speaker B: I don't need to get it out. [00:13:35] Speaker C: I believe you. [00:13:36] Speaker A: How are we, who do I need to flex on? How are we gonna know what page to buy? You know, we can buy extra specs on. [00:13:44] Speaker B: I know. Well, I, you know, it's true. I'm so sorry, Dan. I let you down. I, I mean, I can go get [00:13:51] Speaker C: mine out of my long box, but, [00:13:54] Speaker B: you know, I, I'm, I'm the letdown, everybody. I am sorry. [00:14:03] Speaker A: Plus, Brian said he has one. [00:14:05] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Okay, Brian, go ahead. Go do it. [00:14:08] Speaker A: We don't want him to mess. I don't want him to mess up his book. [00:14:12] Speaker C: I do. My copy is in great condition. It was one that I found and was like, this is the first one I've seen in the wild. I have to buy it. [00:14:21] Speaker B: Ah, yeah. Now when you see something like that, you have to, because you just like, you might never see it again. You know, I. [00:14:27] Speaker C: And the funny thing about it is, back in the day, even when I found it before the whole resurgence where GI Joe kind of had seen its [00:14:35] Speaker B: comeback, [00:14:38] Speaker C: but even back then, issue 21 was one of the best issues. Cost me like 20 bucks. Like. [00:14:46] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:14:46] Speaker C: Which for a GI Joe comic is really rare and unheard of at the time. [00:14:54] Speaker A: Well, and it's, it's. I, I will say one thing. You've got. I don't know how yours looks, but the way they did these compendiums. [00:15:01] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:15:02] Speaker A: They, they washed out the coloring like it's on newsprint. [00:15:06] Speaker C: Yeah. Mine, I think looks pretty similar. [00:15:09] Speaker A: Does not. Yeah, that's Greg. Can you see that? Yeah. I'm amazed. I'm amazed at how they were able to do that. Usually when you, A lot of times when you get these books that were originally printed on newsprint, they oversaturate the colors on the newer paper and you get some pretty wild. [00:15:29] Speaker C: I'd forgotten that they were all on newsprint. You're right. I'm so used to modern day books. But those old GI Joes were. I mean, and sometimes they were rice paper delicate. I have. [00:15:39] Speaker B: Oh yeah. [00:15:40] Speaker C: Torn so many old comics. [00:15:43] Speaker A: Yeah, I have some. I had some GI Joe around the fifth, the issue 50 mark. I ended up with like seven or eight of them as a kid. I couldn't always buy lots of comics consistently. I do remember liking the stories. Yeah, we covered one or no, I covered one on a different podcast. I covered one of Jason on his podcast. [00:16:04] Speaker B: Did you? I thought, I thought for sure we covered a book. [00:16:09] Speaker A: I thought I covered it on Jason's podcast. [00:16:10] Speaker B: Oh, maybe I covered a book on Jason's podcast too. [00:16:15] Speaker C: For me, like, growing up, my mom, I had a single mom and she was hyper, overprotective, and she was a veteran. So growing up, all my friends were like, hey, man, did you watch he man last night? I'm like, no, I was not allowed to watch He Man. Not allowed to watch Transformers. I had no Transformers toys. I had, I had He Mans, but they were at my dad's house because my dad bought them for me because [00:16:40] Speaker B: I was not allowed to have them [00:16:41] Speaker C: at my mom's house. But GI Joe was like this star spangled, all American, like, flag waving, Reagan era hero. So my mom was always like, yeah, here you could have GI Joe comics. You can watch the GI Joe cartoon. And then I remember watching like PTSD riddled Vietnam vets, like shooting each other in the face and going, I don't think mom needs to know this is what's in here. Yeah, he is cool about this because the comics got dark sometimes. [00:17:15] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, no, like some of the Special Mission books. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, and, and like, as you get into these, like, these issues, like, they're, they, they're real. They really deal with issues like, you know, and that's, that's the crazy thing because they're not, they're not for kids. And you know, and that's the thing. Like, I know, like, like several years ago now, I, I got a chance to talk with Larry and he was like, yeah, I wrote these because it was. Yeah, I, I wrote these because I wanted, I had stuff I needed to get out and you know, for me and my friends and, you know, it's just stuff that you just want to write and it's like, wow, okay, all [00:18:03] Speaker A: right, so say Larry's last name because I'll mess it up. Well, I would. See, I say hammer, so. I told you I'd mess it up. You all are like, it's not that hard. There's four letters. [00:18:17] Speaker B: Oh, I mean, yeah, it's. [00:18:21] Speaker A: They were, they were books that. They were books that have stood the test of time as well, which is, is hard for some of the 80s books, I think. Right? Yeah, yeah, it not, not all the 80s books stood up. I guess we review a lot of them, so we'd argue a lot of them that no offense to Booster Gold, but the character, the, the character, the characters stuck around. But I don't, you know, I love nostalgia and going back and reading the books, but I don't think they, they stood up like something like this does. [00:18:56] Speaker C: Yeah, I never read Booster Gold independent, like individual books. I've only ever seen him as a character in other books. But I, I could see how early Booster Gold, given the character's backstory and everything, may not last and they've shipped. [00:19:13] Speaker A: We had fun reading them. [00:19:15] Speaker B: He's a goof. [00:19:16] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And once he had a bigger backstory, you could do the solo book with him, which they did later, but. [00:19:23] Speaker C: Or like his starring role in Heroes in Crisis. I see that look on your face. [00:19:36] Speaker A: You know, I really like Tom King. I. But Heroes in Crisis was. It was a. Don't mess with Wally. That's all I gotta say. Like, okay, don't. Don't mess. I don't. There are times when I think it's appropriate to mess with the most innocent of us. But Wally. Wally west as a character was always the most. I shouldn't say always because there were some times around, like the. Between the Teen Titans and New Teen Titans, they kind of tried to mess with his character a bit, but Wally was always like innocent, bright eyed family Guy, you know, and. And then they had him murdering everybody. I. Spoiler. [00:20:22] Speaker C: No, that's. I, I'll be honest with you. I was not as familiar with Wally as I was with Barry. So when I read Heroes in Crisis, it. That was all new to me. Like I knew who he was. I knew that he was a character. And seeing him in that was like, oh, wow, he's. He's gone through some shit. [00:20:43] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:20:43] Speaker A: Yeah. Wally. Wally to me is way more interesting than Barry. [00:20:51] Speaker C: Okay. [00:20:53] Speaker A: I just think he's. He's a far more complex character. He's far more interesting character. And I like now how they're kind of running. They did. No pun intended, they ran Barry through the book and then ran Wally through the book and now it's on Wally and then when they get burned out on Wally, they'll turn it back over to Barry. I think that makes some sense. [00:21:12] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:21:13] Speaker B: Good way to run the book because [00:21:15] Speaker A: the characters don't have legs. [00:21:19] Speaker B: They don't. [00:21:21] Speaker A: Yeah, it's. [00:21:22] Speaker B: Oh my goodness. [00:21:23] Speaker C: I mean, he didn't in D.C. versus vampires. [00:21:27] Speaker B: Wow. [00:21:27] Speaker A: That's fair. Spoiler like. [00:21:32] Speaker B: Oh my. [00:21:34] Speaker C: We. [00:21:34] Speaker A: What have you. We did like the way. We did like the way Tom King used Booster Gold in Human Target, though. [00:21:41] Speaker C: Oh, I haven't read that. [00:21:43] Speaker A: Oh, wow. We reviewed it on Here it is if you want some. So it's film noir. [00:21:51] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:21:51] Speaker A: Except. Except the. You've got the human target, who is effectually the detective in it. And all the. All the other characters are the Justice League international from the 90s. [00:22:03] Speaker C: Oh, okay. [00:22:05] Speaker A: So fire and Ice are in there. Boosters in there. [00:22:09] Speaker C: Okay, I gotta go look that one up because. Yeah, Tom King's good. [00:22:12] Speaker A: Guy Gardner's in there. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That story is fantastic. [00:22:17] Speaker B: It. [00:22:17] Speaker C: It's. [00:22:18] Speaker A: I think Tom King's at his best when he's doing those kind of Elseworld stories too, when he's not in the main Line. When they can. He can just. Well, I really love Supergirl. Woman of Tomorrow. [00:22:28] Speaker C: I just picked that up after I saw the movie. Oh, I gotta go read that. That's, like, at the top of my list. [00:22:33] Speaker A: Movie. Definitely inspired by it, but I think book. The book may be better. I've heard that if you like Blake's artwork, I think she did a fantastic job on it too, so. But yeah. Anyway, now I've got us way off track. Yeah. [00:22:49] Speaker C: We're on the TIJ 21, the silent issue. It's a comic book entitled Silent Interlude. [00:22:56] Speaker A: I'm going to be doing a lot of reading for this one. I understand. [00:22:59] Speaker B: I know that's great. [00:23:00] Speaker C: For anybody who's not familiar with the book, like, there are no words. There's no onomatopoeia. There's no sound effects. There's no word balloons, captions, bubbles, nothing. It's just sequential art. [00:23:15] Speaker B: I would say it's interesting to go from the episode we did last week with Randy in which he discussed how Dark Knight Returns was the. We need to have all this action and. And. And dial the dialogue with action and stuff like that. And then we have this book with nothing but action and no dialogue at all. [00:23:43] Speaker C: Yeah, it's. [00:23:44] Speaker B: It's really interesting. And yet just a few years before that. [00:23:49] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:23:49] Speaker A: Was the Dark Never Returned this book? [00:23:50] Speaker C: Was that 86? [00:23:52] Speaker A: Yeah. Dark Knight Returns. 86. [00:23:54] Speaker B: Yeah. So this is a couple years before. [00:23:56] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:23:56] Speaker B: So we get something. [00:23:58] Speaker C: I never really thought about the two books in. In relation. Yeah. [00:24:03] Speaker A: Nor should you ever taint this book by associating it with the Dark Knight Return. [00:24:07] Speaker B: No, I. I wasn't associating. I was just saying there's a huge, like the. The dichotomy. [00:24:15] Speaker C: The push pull. [00:24:16] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, the dichotomy. The push pull. [00:24:18] Speaker A: No, in this book, I can follow the panels. Yeah, Yeah, I can follow the panels. This. This book makes logical sense. [00:24:24] Speaker C: There are. [00:24:25] Speaker A: There are no Nazis in this book, I don't think. [00:24:27] Speaker C: No. [00:24:27] Speaker B: Well, I mean. [00:24:29] Speaker C: No, no, they're not Nazis. They're all American. [00:24:33] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:24:33] Speaker C: Well, no, Destro is Scottish and the Baroness is German, I think. [00:24:43] Speaker B: Well. And she's hanging out with Major Blood, so. Yeah. [00:24:45] Speaker C: Yeah, that's true. And he's Australian Major blood. [00:24:51] Speaker B: Zartan's Australian Major blood, I think is. I believe he's gonna. Maybe. [00:24:56] Speaker A: Well, this book. I mean, but this book is interesting because it spawned. It spawned a couple of things. There was a parody book done later. They did a Deadpool book. [00:25:07] Speaker C: Oh, they did a Deadpool parodies. [00:25:09] Speaker B: This. [00:25:10] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:25:10] Speaker C: Oh, I didn't know about that one. I knew there was a daredevil a couple years later as well. [00:25:18] Speaker A: Well, they also did well. And then in 2001, which I'm gonna rely on my old professional wrestling knowledge and say, jim Coronette says you should never have a cage match for no reason. [00:25:30] Speaker C: Ah. [00:25:31] Speaker A: Marvel decided in honor of this book in 2002. Or is it 2001? Looks like December cover date. So it would have come out in anyway. They did a whole month of silent issues. [00:25:47] Speaker B: Okay. [00:25:49] Speaker A: Called Nuff Said. [00:25:51] Speaker C: I remember hearing about that. Yeah. [00:25:54] Speaker A: Yeah. I don't. You know, this is cool because it's built up to. Through the first 20 books. [00:26:04] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:26:05] Speaker A: And there's a reason for it, and things happen. And then in. I mean, but just to have every book go with no words for a whole month is. [00:26:19] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:26:20] Speaker A: Dumb. [00:26:22] Speaker C: Is it, though? You're talking about the 2001, like, series they did? [00:26:25] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:26:26] Speaker C: Oh, okay. [00:26:27] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:26:27] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:26:28] Speaker A: Every single book. That much just had no words. [00:26:31] Speaker C: There was no reason to do it other than just like, we're gonna do an homage to GI Joe. Like, but, like, when GI Joe did, it made sense. There was a story that was being told in sequence between issues 20 and 22. It works. [00:26:50] Speaker A: And so, like, it's. It's kind of like in wrestling now. Like, every year they have a pay per view where they do that elimination chamber thing. Why? Like, why? [00:27:05] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:27:07] Speaker A: Right now, if you have storylines where you're gonna put six people and lock them in a giant cage because they're all mad at each other or all have competing interests or something like that, that would be really interesting. [00:27:18] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:27:19] Speaker A: And that would be the difference between 80s professional wrestling and professional wrestling now. [00:27:25] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:27:27] Speaker A: We just do things besides that. The ATH athleticism is much better, but. [00:27:31] Speaker C: Oh, definitely The. [00:27:33] Speaker A: The stories in getting you there are. [00:27:41] Speaker C: Hey, I'm really sorry. I gotta jump for, like, one second. I gotta take care of something. Hold on a second. [00:27:46] Speaker A: No worries. [00:27:47] Speaker C: Yeah. And mute myself. I'll be right back. [00:27:50] Speaker A: We lost Brian. We lost him. [00:27:53] Speaker C: We lost him. [00:27:54] Speaker A: Oh, no. [00:27:54] Speaker B: He's into. [00:27:55] Speaker A: I ran. [00:27:56] Speaker B: You ran him off? [00:27:58] Speaker A: I ran our new guest off the show already. [00:28:00] Speaker B: You turned it into a silent episode, Dan. Now we have a silent episode. [00:28:03] Speaker A: That's true. [00:28:04] Speaker B: The guest is now silent. [00:28:06] Speaker A: We silenced everybody. [00:28:07] Speaker B: Silence. Oh, my gosh. I. You know, I find it funny that. That we have Brian on the show and then Travis calls. And for those who don't know, I met Brian through Travis. Through the web of comics, if you will. [00:28:25] Speaker A: Travis Webb. [00:28:28] Speaker B: I'm putting it out there for the people. This is the banjo. This is the vamping that we do. Well, the guests are gone. [00:28:34] Speaker A: What do you think Travis was calling about and would have been silent? [00:28:37] Speaker B: I know 100%. He was calling because he knew Brian. One, he knew Brian was on the show. Two, he knew we were recording because he gets. He gets reminders that there's a podcast happening today at this time. I don't know. [00:28:52] Speaker A: Why does he get reminders? [00:28:54] Speaker B: Because it's on his calendar. [00:28:56] Speaker A: Why is it on his calendar? [00:28:58] Speaker B: No clue. [00:28:59] Speaker A: He. [00:28:59] Speaker B: I asked him why he always calls at five o' clock, and he says, because there's a podcast. And I was like, do you do it just to be annoying? And he's like, no, I. Sometimes you guys answer. [00:29:11] Speaker A: That's interesting. [00:29:12] Speaker B: All right. [00:29:13] Speaker C: Everything is safe. [00:29:14] Speaker B: He's back. [00:29:15] Speaker C: I have some. I have some scary neighbors who have very loud dogs who sometimes attack other dogs in the neighborhood. [00:29:22] Speaker B: Oh, no. [00:29:23] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:29:24] Speaker C: So every once in a while I'll just hear, like, dogs screaming outside, and I'm like, do I need to go call the cops or something? What's going on, sir? Anyway, the police. [00:29:34] Speaker B: I. I was explaining scary. I was explaining to the neighbor. To the neighbors. I was explaining to the neighbors. [00:29:39] Speaker C: Hello. [00:29:40] Speaker B: How we know each. How we know each other to the listeners. How we know each other through. Through the web of comics. That would be the Travis Web. [00:29:48] Speaker C: I mean, true. The Travis Webb. Also, like, I. I'm not kidding. I was a fanboy Junior Braves, and Travis was like, oh, yeah, I know him. And I'm like, you know this guy? That's. No. Cool. [00:30:01] Speaker B: Yeah. No, and. And we've hung out in the past, too, so, I mean, it is. I mean, we've been friends for. [00:30:06] Speaker A: For a handful of years. [00:30:07] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:30:07] Speaker B: So that's legit. [00:30:10] Speaker C: So. Sure. [00:30:11] Speaker A: Web. Web Weber. Web. [00:30:16] Speaker B: Well, and we. [00:30:19] Speaker C: Back when he was living in Walla Walla, like, I've known him since 2001, I think. [00:30:24] Speaker B: A long time ago. [00:30:25] Speaker A: Yeah, the town so nice they named it twice. [00:30:28] Speaker C: It is. [00:30:28] Speaker B: Yes. [00:30:29] Speaker C: Not. [00:30:30] Speaker B: But what are you talking about? He has nothing but good things to say about his time in the Walla Walla. [00:30:36] Speaker C: Oh, okay, [00:30:39] Speaker B: jokes. Okay, jokes. [00:30:41] Speaker C: Yes, jokes. [00:30:42] Speaker A: Well, back to the issue. [00:30:44] Speaker C: So G21. [00:30:47] Speaker B: Yes. [00:30:47] Speaker A: We've got. [00:30:48] Speaker C: There's so many things to lose. This guy on the COVID the book Snake Eyes is the one guy who. They have yet to reveal his name. They have shown his face both pre plastic surgery, pre accident. Like, we know what he looks like. And yet they still have not revealed his name. [00:31:10] Speaker A: We don't know anything about him. [00:31:12] Speaker C: Well, we know that he had a twin. [00:31:13] Speaker A: He's a ninja. [00:31:15] Speaker C: We know he had a twin sister. [00:31:16] Speaker A: Oh, I didn't know that. [00:31:18] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. [00:31:19] Speaker A: Wow. [00:31:19] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. But I want to cut you out. [00:31:22] Speaker B: Do it. [00:31:22] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. [00:31:23] Speaker B: I was gonna say, you know what's crazy is like, so you don't know this, Dan, but I don't. [00:31:31] Speaker A: So I read in issue 50 ish. [00:31:33] Speaker B: So. Yeah, but him and his sister were separated when they were younger, and. And his sister went to go to go off and live with one family, and then he. He went to go off and live with his uncle and aunt, and then when he got older and older wise. I know, right? An old wise man showed him the ways of the Jedi. It was amazing. Oh, wait. I'm getting my stories mixed up. Damn it, kids. [00:32:02] Speaker C: Wrong twins. [00:32:03] Speaker A: That sounded wrong. Very interesting. [00:32:06] Speaker B: I know. [00:32:07] Speaker A: I feel like I saw that movie. [00:32:09] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:32:10] Speaker C: The funny. Here's the weird thing. I'm just going to spoil this for everybody. The story of GI Joe, a real American hero, is truly the story of. Because Snake Eyes met the Baroness and her brother while he was in Vietnam. That was where he met Storm Shadow and Stalker. Stalker who recruited him into G. And after Snake Eyes got home from Vietnam, he was bust friends with Cobra Commander for. And they would go around and they would pull. [00:32:41] Speaker A: What? [00:32:41] Speaker C: Yeah. So Snake Eyes gets home from Vietnam. His whole family had been killed in a car wreck on the way to the airport to pick him up. [00:32:50] Speaker B: Pick him up? Yeah. [00:32:51] Speaker C: Duke shows up at the airport to tell Snake Eyes, yes, his whole family is dead. And Snake Eyes just starts, like, going to bars and, like, drinking because he's got nothing to do. And he runs into Cobra Commander who's like, hey, are you tired of, like, how the American dream has fallen apart? Well, you should come with me. We're gonna go like. And they. I don't think they rob banks, but they end up, like, ripping off a bunch of, like, stores and convenience stores. I think they rob a car dealership at some point. [00:33:19] Speaker B: They're kind of like. [00:33:20] Speaker A: And then Cobra Commander became president, and then Snake Eyes became Secretary of Defense. [00:33:25] Speaker C: Well, I think that might have been an alternate timeline. [00:33:30] Speaker B: That's. That's an alternate timeline. Yeah, but Cobra Commander starts his own. His own Fonzie schem. So he. Yeah, so he punches. [00:33:40] Speaker A: Hey, hey. [00:33:41] Speaker B: He punches a jukebox. He's got a. An office in a bathroom. [00:33:46] Speaker A: Did he hit a shark? [00:33:48] Speaker C: He jumped. [00:33:48] Speaker B: Yeah, he jumps the shark. He jumps over it. [00:33:51] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:33:51] Speaker B: It's really great. [00:33:51] Speaker C: But like, this a r C. It's the GI Joe vehicle. The shark. And. Yeah. [00:33:56] Speaker B: He jumps. Yeah. [00:33:58] Speaker A: Oh, of course there's a GI Joe vehicle. [00:34:00] Speaker B: The shark. [00:34:00] Speaker A: I should have known. [00:34:01] Speaker B: It's pretty cool. Yeah, of course. [00:34:07] Speaker C: I mean, that was. What it was, was Covert Commander was running around with Snake Eyes, and they were pulling, like, Robin Hood schemes and, like, Robin places and, like, torching bank records so that people's mortgages would get forgiven. And then one day. [00:34:19] Speaker B: It's very much like Wisdom, the movie. [00:34:21] Speaker C: It's very much like Wisdom, which is a real deep poll. You're the only other person I've ever known who knows that movie. Like, what's. [00:34:28] Speaker B: What's crazy is, like, as. As a kid, I didn't. I didn't. I didn't pick up on that. But when I reread my issues, I was like, this is, like, watching Wisdom. It's, like, so good. [00:34:40] Speaker C: And, like, it turns out the whole thing was a big scam so that Cobra Commander could get Snake Eyes to help him murder the judge that arrested Cobra Commander's brother, who then got drunk and crashed into Snake Eyes's family as a drunk driver. So, like, Cobra Commanders alcoholic brother killed Snake Eyes's family. [00:35:04] Speaker B: It's a circle, man. [00:35:06] Speaker A: When do Luke and Laura come in? [00:35:09] Speaker C: Luke and Laura? [00:35:10] Speaker B: They don't. [00:35:12] Speaker A: General Hospital. [00:35:13] Speaker C: Oh, that. I mean, wasn't General Hospital in, like, as well, so it would have been wild. Probably right around issue 21. [00:35:24] Speaker A: Right? [00:35:25] Speaker B: Well, no. Issue 25. Ish, I think. So there's the wedding that I was talking about. Oh, yeah. [00:35:30] Speaker C: They dress up Snake Eyes and scarlet, but it was actually Luke and Laura. [00:35:34] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:35:35] Speaker A: Okay. [00:35:36] Speaker C: Wait, was Luke the guy with the eye patch? [00:35:40] Speaker A: I don't know. I don't remember, honestly. You know, because I only got to watch when I was sick, so I maybe saw one or two episodes a year, but it's. Yeah, I. [00:35:52] Speaker C: You know, that's how deep my. [00:35:54] Speaker A: Now I'm gonna have to go. Now I'm gonna have to go read all of this because, like, I am now so deep. [00:36:02] Speaker C: If you read the Snake Eyes trilogy that Randy Amberlin drew, it's right around issue 90. I want to say I have to look it up, but, like, yeah, that's. [00:36:13] Speaker A: So that'll be in this number two over here. [00:36:15] Speaker C: But that's where, like, yeah, Snake Eyes meets the Baroness in Vietnam. But the rest of that story is told in. I think it's just called, like, the Snake Eye story. [00:36:27] Speaker B: Yeah. And it's. It's a. It's a nice, compact story. It's. It's Pretty cool because it's like you, you get when you start to, when you start to read it, like, I think like, he rescues Stalker from a firefight at one point. [00:36:44] Speaker C: So he's laying down cover fire. [00:36:46] Speaker B: Yeah, laying up. Yeah. So. And that's like, so that's, that's how he ends up getting injured and then, like, and Stalker gets out. So there's that, that brotherhood bond of like, oh, you, you did this for me, and now I have to do something for you later type thing. Yeah, but there's, I mean, there's, there's some deep threads throughout the whole entire thing, and you can see that, like, in the comic. And they even played it up in the show, too, as a kid. You're watching it. You don't understand. Yeah, but there's a lot of stuff that ties back, and that's, this is [00:37:16] Speaker A: kind of crazy because now I know how Greg feels when I start talking about the Legion of Superheroes. [00:37:22] Speaker B: Oh, my God. Well, and, and I'm not. And, and so, honestly, so I was, I was like, several months ago, I was about to sell all of my issues, everything. I, I, I sold off my, my special missions because I was like, I, I don't care about them. I know. I just didn't. I really didn't. [00:37:39] Speaker C: No, but. Totally insane. You got to make room. [00:37:41] Speaker B: And my wife was like, don't do it. She was like, you've gotten stuff signed there. You, you can get rid of other stuff, but these are things. And she's like. And she's actually, she's gone and talked to Larry. She's, you know, she's met some of the other creators and stuff like that with me, and she knows how much this stuff means to me, growing up with it and, and knowing that, like, you know, I have, like, there's that, that connection in a sense. [00:38:09] Speaker A: Right. [00:38:09] Speaker B: And it's one of, like, between this and Howard the Duck. It's like my two, those are my two things that I like, I love, you know, so it's like she's like, don't sell those books, because I had bundled it with my GI Joe collection, which I, I know. The, the, the, the character, the, the figures. I, I love the figures, but I don't necessarily need them in my life, but the books I can go back and read and enjoy. [00:38:33] Speaker C: Yeah, no, and I'm. I feel very much the same way because I, I think recently I was cleaning out my storage shed, and I found, like, a box of old action figures, and I'm like, these, these are Great. These are happy memories from when I was a kid. [00:38:45] Speaker A: But yeah, favorite character. [00:38:50] Speaker C: I mean, in G.I. joe. [00:38:52] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:38:52] Speaker C: Snake eyes. Absolutely. That's why I got a tattoo. [00:38:55] Speaker B: Yeah, see, I knew it. I knew it, I knew it. [00:38:58] Speaker A: Oh, wait, you're part of the group route. [00:39:01] Speaker C: I'm in Ninja Clan. Yeah. [00:39:04] Speaker A: We shouldn't talk about that yet, though. I did, I did send Greg. I maybe. No, I didn't send it to Greg. I sent it to a different friend. Greg, I should have sent this to you, but apparently in some town in California, there's a ninja parade every year and the ninjas never are seen. [00:39:20] Speaker B: Yeah, because they. Pictures, they, they, they have to sneak through the town and stuff like that and get around empty street. [00:39:27] Speaker C: A great picture of the. [00:39:28] Speaker A: They saw a ninja once in like the 80s. I saw it in the Onion. The very, it's very credible news source. [00:39:33] Speaker B: Well, I know, but it's a true thing. It's a real thing. [00:39:35] Speaker C: Now the ironic thing about talking about Ninjas in the 80s, my, my martial arts instructor just got back from a trip to California where apparently his sister in law lives like two doors down from Michael Dudikoff. Oh, so he got to like meet, hang out. They had a barbecue. You get to meet Michael Dudikoff. That so cool. [00:39:54] Speaker B: That is cool. [00:39:55] Speaker A: Well, you know what is really cool? We know a martial arts instructor that is also Greg's lawyer. [00:40:01] Speaker B: That's true. [00:40:04] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:40:04] Speaker C: Who's that? [00:40:05] Speaker A: Did you, did you know that? Well, you didn't know. [00:40:09] Speaker B: You didn't know. You don't know. You don't. [00:40:11] Speaker A: You don't know. You didn't know. Lawyer Paul. [00:40:14] Speaker C: What? [00:40:15] Speaker B: Jiu Jitsu, Lawyer Paul. [00:40:17] Speaker A: Here's something you should know. [00:40:19] Speaker C: Jiu Jitsu, Lawyer Paul. [00:40:20] Speaker A: Jiu Jitsu, Lawyer Paul. He is licensed in both Washington and California. [00:40:26] Speaker B: Yeah, but not if you need a lawyer. But not in Oregon. [00:40:29] Speaker A: Not Oregon, no. [00:40:31] Speaker C: Okay. [00:40:32] Speaker A: Oh, you're in Oregon. Well, if I need a jujitsu instructor [00:40:34] Speaker C: or a lawyer, I can call Paul. [00:40:37] Speaker A: You could call him at 253-656-4475. And in fact, he would help you with your employment issues. He is kind of like a ninja lawyer. He sneaks in and takes out those big mean employers when they're doing bad things to employees, like discriminating against them. [00:40:55] Speaker C: Where was he? Yeah, let's see, 16 years ago when I got fired from Radio Shack. [00:41:02] Speaker A: Ah, yeah, I don't know. But you know what else he can do? [00:41:06] Speaker B: What's that? [00:41:08] Speaker A: He can also choke out the opposition so he can beat them in an argument. He can also put them in a Rear Naked joke. [00:41:16] Speaker C: So is this like an episode of Leverage where after he beats somebody in the courthouse, like, as he's leaving, they try to jump him to get revenge, and he just, like Rear Naked Chokehold. [00:41:27] Speaker A: Yeah, well, if they did, he certainly could do that. And. Yeah, but if you prefer, you could go to 27th and Bridgeport, right here in Tacoma, and go to certified martial arts. And you could train with Jiu Jitsu lawyer Paul. [00:41:40] Speaker C: Okay. [00:41:41] Speaker B: And you can learn to do the martial arts aspect yourself in case you get in the jam. And then if you get in a jam because of the martial arts, you can call. Paul can help get you. What was that number again? [00:41:53] Speaker A: Together. Oh, well, I just put the number away, so. [00:41:57] Speaker B: Well, Dan, do it again. [00:41:58] Speaker A: Pull it back out. Why? Why? You could have told me you wanted the number 253. [00:42:02] Speaker B: You always know. I asked for the number two times. Two times, Dan. [00:42:05] Speaker A: Oh, well, it's 2 5, 3. Well, quit talking over the number. It's 2 5, 3, 6 5, 6, 4, 47 5. How would Paul feel about you talking over his phone number? [00:42:15] Speaker B: I didn't mean to talk over the number. He. [00:42:17] Speaker A: He would. Is that a challenge? [00:42:20] Speaker B: No. [00:42:21] Speaker A: Now, the question is, do you think Jiu Jitsu lawyer Paul could have snuck in like snake eyes? [00:42:27] Speaker B: No. [00:42:29] Speaker A: Wow. That was definitive. [00:42:30] Speaker C: See, I see you keep saying all this, but the irony is that there are cobra ninjas who are lawyers. [00:42:39] Speaker B: It's true. [00:42:40] Speaker C: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you, like, spit out all over your comics. [00:42:43] Speaker A: I almost spit. Take on my comics. Yes. And this box set was not cheap, so that's why I hardly get it out. It was not cheap at all. Yeah. So. Well, we've got this. Awesome. Oh, go ahead, Greg. I was gonna start in the book. [00:43:01] Speaker B: I have to. I know, I know. But before we go further, I have to. I have to say Tanner and I, we. We wrote another kid, another book. Absolute zeros. And in a book that has not. It hasn't. Hasn't come to light yet, but there's. There are two characters that are. They're. They're twin brothers in. In this other story. They're not in. In book one. In book two is the unreleased book yet. But they're twin brothers, and they. They very much have a love from Michael and I of our. Our love for GI Joe. I think you're picking up what I'm laying down, Brian. I think you might know who these twins might be closely related to. [00:43:48] Speaker A: Are their names Tom and motto? [00:43:53] Speaker B: No, they're not. But. [00:43:54] Speaker C: Oh, that's. [00:43:56] Speaker B: Yes, yes. It could be. Yes, yes. [00:44:00] Speaker A: Oh, they are. Their names. Ox and XO show [00:44:08] Speaker B: they don't have names because we don't have a book out. So I can't tell you about them more than. More than just that they're. They're loosely based on. [00:44:15] Speaker A: Well, this is a great place to break exclusives right here. [00:44:18] Speaker B: It's not an exclusive. There's no. There's no scoop. There's no scoop. CBR is going to get it. [00:44:25] Speaker C: Anything about your book is. We gotta hear it. [00:44:29] Speaker A: Well, if we had had the actual cover, if Greg would have gone and actually got it, we could have saw what was down in this little, like, box here. [00:44:36] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Could have seen what's in the box. [00:44:38] Speaker C: Well. Well, it was. If it wasn't a barcode, it would have been the Black Spider man, because that was what they were using. [00:44:44] Speaker B: That's true. Yeah. [00:44:45] Speaker C: For the direct market. [00:44:46] Speaker B: Yeah. The Black Spider man face. [00:44:47] Speaker C: Unless it was one of those that said, like, the fall of the mutants is coming. Because sometimes the direct markets would have little promos for the other upcoming books. [00:44:57] Speaker B: I thought it was the mutants are coming and fall. [00:45:01] Speaker C: Maybe the mutants are falling. No, wait. [00:45:05] Speaker A: Oh, wow. [00:45:08] Speaker B: Sorry, Dan, how does that make you feel? [00:45:11] Speaker A: I mean, it's fine. Like, I, you know, we're all good. Yeah, it's fine. The. I think that. I think I was more honestly concerned. I'm gonna. If you haven't watched episode six of X Men 97, and I assume both of you have not so spoiler. I'm just saying for everybody here, and that listens when Gambit's card showed up. [00:45:43] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:45:46] Speaker C: I'm like, where's the spoiler? Yeah, it was like, it's X Men. [00:45:48] Speaker A: There was a dead apocalypse. There was a dead apocalypse. And then it's the current cartoon. [00:45:54] Speaker C: Right. But it's based in 1997. I don't know if you can spoil something that's 30 years old. [00:45:59] Speaker A: Well, it's like pre toasting and not pre toasting. [00:46:02] Speaker B: Yeah, that's true. It is. It is a. It is a pre toasted. It's a pre toast. Pre toasted. [00:46:07] Speaker A: This might be a pre. This might be the first incidence. I'll agree with Greg on pre toasting because I. Yeah, well, what are we. Brian? That human. [00:46:15] Speaker C: I won. [00:46:16] Speaker B: You know, everybody win. [00:46:17] Speaker C: I did. [00:46:18] Speaker A: I did. [00:46:18] Speaker B: You just said you agreed. I have won, everybody. I have won. All right. [00:46:23] Speaker A: I create. First off, I created the instance, Brian, in that human target book. See Booster Gold. Gold owns a bagel. Shop. [00:46:31] Speaker C: Okay. [00:46:31] Speaker A: And his bagel shop is known for pre toasting the bagels, which is the worst gimmick in his bagel shop is going out of business. [00:46:38] Speaker B: So how do you. [00:46:39] Speaker A: That's what it's known for. [00:46:40] Speaker C: Like isn't a bagel. [00:46:41] Speaker A: Exactly. [00:46:41] Speaker C: Is it either or not toasted. [00:46:45] Speaker A: Yeah. You cannot pre toast something before it gets toasted. So then it's toasting before you toast. [00:46:52] Speaker B: No, no, you toasted before it's toasted. [00:46:54] Speaker A: So it's preto. Yeah, Brian is exactly right. It's then it's been toasted and then. [00:46:57] Speaker B: No, it's not toasted yet. [00:46:58] Speaker A: You can have retoasting, but you can't have almost. [00:47:01] Speaker C: You can retest and you can post toast, but you can't pre toast. [00:47:04] Speaker A: You can't pre toast. You can pre toasty, but in this case, this says you can pre Toast X Men 97. First example of cartoon. [00:47:16] Speaker B: Yes, you can. I am post toast. [00:47:18] Speaker C: Indeed. [00:47:20] Speaker A: Ah, X Men 97. [00:47:21] Speaker C: Yes. [00:47:22] Speaker A: May be the first example of pre toasting. Of pre toasting a cartoon. [00:47:26] Speaker C: Okay, okay. I will allow. [00:47:28] Speaker A: Okay. So this book. [00:47:29] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:47:30] Speaker A: Which we haven't even started yet. I is fantastic. [00:47:34] Speaker B: So 147 minutes, folks. 47 minutes. We're finally getting to the content. [00:47:39] Speaker A: Greg, we have talked about the content. [00:47:41] Speaker B: No, I know we've talked about it. We skirted around it. [00:47:44] Speaker A: We're getting why we're like, we're much [00:47:46] Speaker B: like getting into the layer. [00:47:50] Speaker A: In fact, I'm gonna put this away. We are like ninjas. We've already covered the whole book and you didn't even know. [00:47:55] Speaker B: Oh my God. You're correct. Because there's no words for Dan to read. [00:48:01] Speaker A: And there is no words. [00:48:02] Speaker C: I mean, I can describe the pictures of like snake eyes throwing a knife into this guy's face. Priceless. [00:48:09] Speaker B: People, if you're not watching, if you're not watching the. The episodes on live YouTube, you should, you should. Because Dan's face was just like. [00:48:19] Speaker A: Oh, well, Greg. Yes, Dan. That'd be two weeks in a row. I didn't read anything in the comic. [00:48:26] Speaker C: Well, correct there. [00:48:31] Speaker A: I mean, last week we had the worst comic in history and one of [00:48:35] Speaker C: the worst comic in history. [00:48:38] Speaker A: Dark Knight Returns, number one. [00:48:39] Speaker B: What a good comic. [00:48:41] Speaker C: How is that the worst comic in it? [00:48:45] Speaker A: It's not the worst comic in history. That's impossible. The worst. The worst comic that we have reviewed on the show was that whatever that Teen Titans thing was reappeared. No, it wasn't. No, that. Those were worse. The patricide books were worse. [00:49:02] Speaker B: Yeah. Oh, that was Pretty terrible. Yeah, it is pretty bad. [00:49:05] Speaker A: Terror. Terror Titans. Terror Titans may be one of the worst comic books I've ever read in my life. [00:49:11] Speaker B: Every. Everybody kills their. One of their parents. It's there. It's. [00:49:15] Speaker A: It's a. [00:49:16] Speaker B: Every issue is. Oh, my God. [00:49:18] Speaker A: I mean, this is. And then, of course, I can definitely say Dark Knight Returns is better than Captain America, Streets of Poison. [00:49:27] Speaker B: That was a good one. What about. What about Captain America, Captain Captain America, Captain Werewolf Captain. [00:49:33] Speaker A: Now, I think Capwolf was better than Captain America, Streets of Poison. [00:49:38] Speaker B: But Captain Captain America, Miami Vice. [00:49:42] Speaker C: Yeah, no, that's Captain America Renegade. [00:49:47] Speaker B: Yeah. Where he's, like, in the. In the negative zone. I don't know. [00:49:51] Speaker C: He's got the long hair, the Lorenzo Lamas look, and he's riding a Harley. [00:49:55] Speaker A: I'm gonna retract my statement. [00:49:57] Speaker B: So good. Yeah, that's Bobby Six Killers. I'm thumbs up. [00:50:02] Speaker A: I'm gonna back off on this and say Dark Knight Returns is the worst comic I have ever read that is known for being a great comic. [00:50:13] Speaker C: Okay. I. I can. That makes sense. [00:50:17] Speaker B: I mean, the Danny Chase cover makes you really randy. [00:50:23] Speaker A: Pointing that out was fantastic. [00:50:24] Speaker B: That was the best. [00:50:26] Speaker A: Issue two. He said issue two. It looks like Batman is on the toilet. [00:50:29] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. [00:50:31] Speaker A: Yes. I. [00:50:35] Speaker C: Best description. [00:50:36] Speaker A: Yes. [00:50:36] Speaker C: So I've ever heard. [00:50:40] Speaker B: He's contemplating Larry. [00:50:41] Speaker A: Larry Hama, however. Much better artist. [00:50:43] Speaker C: Absolute. [00:50:44] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah. [00:50:46] Speaker C: I mean, he's got Klaus Jansen back. [00:50:50] Speaker A: No, this says. That's just on the COVID So the COVID was different people. [00:50:54] Speaker C: Oh, okay. [00:50:56] Speaker A: The COVID is Ed Hannigan and Klaus. So that's the COVID interiors were. It's Steve Leola. [00:51:09] Speaker C: He finished him because the initial artwork was done by Larry. [00:51:15] Speaker A: Yeah, he does the finishes. Yes. [00:51:18] Speaker C: Another fun thing about this book is this is the first time we meet Storm Shadow. This is the first time we see him as a character anywhere. [00:51:24] Speaker A: Really. This is the first Storm Shadow. [00:51:27] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:51:28] Speaker A: Oh, no wonder. It's worth a lot. Storm Shadow is the best. [00:51:31] Speaker C: I mean, he's not as cool as Snake Eyes. Like, the comic kind of proves that repeatedly. [00:51:35] Speaker A: But, I mean, I don't understand why Snake Eyes has a black costume and he's the bad guy. A good guy. [00:51:42] Speaker B: He's a good guy. [00:51:43] Speaker A: Storm Shadow has a white costume and he's the good guy. It's very confusing. [00:51:47] Speaker C: I am not. [00:51:48] Speaker B: It's like a Western. It's like a country. The good guy wears a black hat. Yeah. Good guy wears a black hat. The bad guy wears a white hat. [00:51:57] Speaker A: You know, that is literally the opposite of what you just Said, no. [00:52:00] Speaker B: I mean, you're not watching the Questers, Dan. [00:52:02] Speaker C: But by the time Clint Eastwood came along, the good guys were wearing black. In fact. [00:52:07] Speaker A: Yeah, he's not a good guy. [00:52:10] Speaker C: Good guys wear black. Or anyway, Pistol. [00:52:14] Speaker A: The man in Black. That was Johnny Cash. Well, anyway, so Snake Eyes, Johnny Cash. [00:52:21] Speaker C: Why that is. I'd have to look that up or see if I can. [00:52:24] Speaker A: So we flip to the page here, and we see Storm Shadow flying in with somebody wrapped up in a blanket or something. And we don't know who this character [00:52:32] Speaker C: is until the next page. [00:52:36] Speaker A: Well, no, I'm saying that we don't. You've. We've never met Storm Shadow before. [00:52:39] Speaker C: Oh, right, yeah. I mean, he flies into the Cobra Castle. Care. Like, on what are the claw. It was called a hang glider. The Cobra claw was called a hang glider. But it has engines. [00:52:52] Speaker B: Right. It's got jet propulsion to get you from point A to point B. Yeah. [00:52:56] Speaker A: Well, this is cool, though, because I was looking at this and I was like, oh, that's Storm Shadow. [00:53:02] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:53:02] Speaker A: But we didn't know who that was. That's. [00:53:04] Speaker C: Yeah. So readers in 84. But this was Storm Shadow at the time. [00:53:09] Speaker A: And then we had. And then they unveil. They cut open the thing, and it's Scarlet in here. [00:53:15] Speaker C: I love. I always think this is funny now that Scarlet has a band aid on her cheek. Like, who bandaged her? Like, because when I was younger, I was just like, yeah. Okay. So, like, she fought on. Okay. So did Storm Shadow, like, beat the hell out of her, tie her up, and then put a band aid on her cheek before wrapping her in a blanket and carrying her back to the Cobra Palace. [00:53:34] Speaker A: Thoughtful. She tried to fight a ninja. Yeah. [00:53:37] Speaker C: I mean, true. [00:53:39] Speaker A: She tried to fight a ninja. [00:53:41] Speaker B: Well, he's not a bad guy. [00:53:43] Speaker A: He's kind of bad guy now. I love this book, obviously. So there's no. We talked. We mentioned it. There's no words in this book. Apparently, Cobra Commander's face, he doesn't emote because he has a mask on, but his eyes and the little lines on top indicate either he's. He doesn't look very happy that they have captured Scarlet. [00:54:10] Speaker C: Oh, see, I thought there was surprise. Like, oh, my God, you caught Scarlet. [00:54:14] Speaker B: What? Look at this gift you brought me. [00:54:17] Speaker A: That's true. I was just wondering if he was both surprised maybe, and also a little scared about the fact that. What is going to happen next now that they have captured one of the GI Joe and brought them into. But who knows? He may have told Storm Shadow to Go. Nameless White Ninja. Sorry. [00:54:38] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:54:39] Speaker A: He may have told Nameless White Ninja previously to go get Scarlet and bring her there. [00:54:46] Speaker C: And the other interesting thing, too, if you look on these pages, Storm Shadow's white uniform does not have the Cobra logo yet. Like, later, he will have that red cobra logo on his lapel, on the front. [00:55:00] Speaker B: This is his Triad, his audition. [00:55:02] Speaker C: Oh, maybe this is his audition. This is how he gets allowed into Cobra as he captures Scarlet and brings her to them. [00:55:11] Speaker A: Well, and that makes sense. And then it does. Well, we. They're also. That light bulb is hilarious. [00:55:17] Speaker C: Oh, the single light bulb on the staircase as they're walking down. [00:55:20] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:55:22] Speaker B: Oh, they can only afford one. They don't have all the money yet. [00:55:24] Speaker C: In Cobra Castle. Yeah, Cobra Castle that they've built. [00:55:31] Speaker A: Well, a plane flies by and C130. Snake eyes just jumps out. C130. That's the plane my dad used to fly over Lawton, Oklahoma. [00:55:42] Speaker C: No way. [00:55:43] Speaker A: Cool. [00:55:47] Speaker B: My dad used to put gas into. [00:55:49] Speaker C: Drops right out the back. Just. [00:55:52] Speaker A: Yep, just out. [00:55:54] Speaker B: Hey, Just like, leaves. Just like in. In. In Call of Duty. Just jumping out. [00:56:00] Speaker C: I was in a Call of Duty, [00:56:01] Speaker A: and now I'm just. [00:56:03] Speaker B: I'm. I'm just joking. They jump out of a Russian airplane. [00:56:07] Speaker C: Admittedly, since you mentioned Call of Duty the last time a Call of Duty game had an Uzi in it. Like, I made that my primary weapon until I had mastered it. Because I'm gonna play in Call of Duty. They don't have a skin for it. I think that's the biggest marketing mistake that Activision Blue. No, not Blizzard. Activision. Has ever made, that they do not have a partnership with Hasbro to put GI Joe skins into the Call of. [00:56:31] Speaker B: Into the game. Yeah. Excuse me, but you can play as a Ninja Turtle now. [00:56:36] Speaker C: Oh, God. Heath Dallas. So, [00:56:42] Speaker A: Snake Eyes or not Snake Eyes. Snake Eyes is flying down Storm Shadows. Put Scarlet in a second gen. On [00:56:51] Speaker B: top of a flan. [00:56:52] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:56:53] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:56:53] Speaker A: She's on top of a flawn. [00:56:55] Speaker B: Yeah, she's on top of a flan. [00:56:56] Speaker C: I mean, it kind of looks like she's on top of a flan there. [00:57:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:57:01] Speaker B: They look like a wedding cake topper. [00:57:02] Speaker C: It's a. [00:57:03] Speaker B: It's a weird thing. [00:57:04] Speaker A: What are those things called? They're just water towers. Right. She's in a water tower. [00:57:08] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:57:09] Speaker C: And she's chained to a pillar. I don't know. We call it the Train Down. [00:57:18] Speaker A: I. I think what. I think. [00:57:20] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:57:21] Speaker A: I think what it needs is some sharks with lasers. [00:57:24] Speaker C: With lasers on their heads. [00:57:26] Speaker A: Yes. [00:57:28] Speaker B: That would Getting there. [00:57:29] Speaker A: Beef up the book a little. [00:57:30] Speaker B: Seabass. [00:57:32] Speaker A: The very angry Seabass. [00:57:34] Speaker C: Seabass. [00:57:35] Speaker A: So, yeah. Well, then we get Destro and he's computer. [00:57:41] Speaker C: Yeah. Monitoring security [00:57:44] Speaker A: altitude, intruder aircraft. Yep. Lack of landmines, possible possibility of air insertion, 0.00018. So basically, yeah, he's pretty confident. Well, basically what Destro did is he did a Six Sigma training for quality control. [00:58:03] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:58:03] Speaker A: And then he Six Sigma'd that Cobra base. Right. So. [00:58:06] Speaker C: So is destroyed Six Sigma black belt or is he? [00:58:11] Speaker A: Yeah, I think. Yeah, I think he's a Six Sigma black belt. [00:58:15] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:58:16] Speaker C: That's why the ninjas. [00:58:17] Speaker A: Yeah. There are only two ninjas in this. That's. [00:58:19] Speaker B: That's why he needs a Storm Shadow, because Storm Shadow is a Six Sigma. [00:58:22] Speaker C: There you go. [00:58:23] Speaker A: Ninja. [00:58:23] Speaker C: Yes. [00:58:24] Speaker A: Right. And it has to be three Six Sigma or Three Sigma past the mean to get into the. Right. [00:58:33] Speaker B: And that's why. That's why Snake eyes wears black. [00:58:36] Speaker A: 1, 2, 3. 1, 2, 3. [00:58:38] Speaker C: Ah. [00:58:39] Speaker A: Okay. [00:58:39] Speaker C: He's a Six Sigma. Is he black belt or the Six Sigma ninja? [00:58:43] Speaker A: No, no, no. [00:58:44] Speaker B: He's a Six Sigma with a black belt. He's got on both. [00:58:51] Speaker A: He's saying very. It's very probable it's within Six Sigma that nobody will ever get into this. [00:58:58] Speaker C: He needs a Six Sigma. [00:59:02] Speaker A: As you can tell, I clearly earned a Six Sigma black belt. A. I've got it. I've got the concept down. [00:59:07] Speaker B: You do? [00:59:08] Speaker C: I think I got a yellow belt years ago. [00:59:13] Speaker A: Wow. [00:59:13] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:59:14] Speaker A: See, it was impressive. [00:59:15] Speaker C: You can see how much value provided me in my career. [00:59:19] Speaker A: Value added. You can now make sure razor blades are manufactured within precision or something. [00:59:26] Speaker C: Yes. [00:59:28] Speaker B: Yeah. Very good. Very. [00:59:32] Speaker A: I'm gonna teach Greg some Six Sigma marketing. [00:59:35] Speaker B: I. Sweet. [00:59:36] Speaker C: I mean. [00:59:37] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, we're gonna be so good at it. Yeah. I love it. [00:59:41] Speaker A: Snake Eyes ends up on the Snake. [00:59:43] Speaker C: He lands, like, right on the rooftop there, riding the snake, [00:59:50] Speaker B: doing what Snake Eyes does. [00:59:53] Speaker C: But then immediately following that, we come back to Scarlett, who is already picking the locks of her handcuffs and escaping. [01:00:00] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:00:00] Speaker A: I think that the ninja is fairly incompetent and everybody's fairly incompetent not to check her hair for hairpins. Yeah. [01:00:11] Speaker B: I mean, are you. Are you thinking that she wouldn't have hairpins with her braids like that? Her hair done like that? Or are you thinking that, like, she's not going to use them or. Or. Or what is that? [01:00:23] Speaker A: I mean, I'm thinking that they're not very good with prisoners because they just, like, leave all of her, like, standard clothing On. That's like her whole GI Joe. [01:00:32] Speaker C: I mean, she doesn't have the ninja stars on her on her wrists like she usually does, though, so at least they took. [01:00:42] Speaker A: Do you think she already used them to try to fight earlier? [01:00:46] Speaker B: Yeah, she might have. Yeah, that maybe. Maybe she threw one and he caught it and then threw it back. And that's how she got cut on the face and needed a bandage. [01:00:58] Speaker C: He put a band aid on her that made. [01:01:00] Speaker B: Yeah, he's. Oh, I'm sorry. Yeah, but he said it quietly. No words. [01:01:04] Speaker A: Nake is like taking out some cobras. [01:01:08] Speaker C: I mean, in the next couple of pages. Yeah. Like, he starts breaking in. I mean, don't forget we've got this awesome. Like, Garlet breaks free. [01:01:17] Speaker A: That's true. [01:01:18] Speaker C: On the next page. [01:01:18] Speaker A: Wait. [01:01:19] Speaker C: Oh, wait, am I pa. Oh, wait, [01:01:20] Speaker A: I'm still looking at Destro. Oh, I was looking at Destro. [01:01:23] Speaker C: Destro looking at the chess board because. [01:01:26] Speaker A: Yeah, that's cool. So Destro is. Destro knows exactly what's going to happen in this entire book and he's telling us. Yeah, right now. [01:01:33] Speaker C: It's interesting. Does your copy have the. The red on Storm Shadow there? [01:01:38] Speaker A: It does, it does, yeah. But he doesn't have the red. [01:01:42] Speaker C: That's what I'm saying. Like, so Destro obviously had these chess pieces, knowing that Storm Shadow was going to pass his audition. [01:01:49] Speaker A: Does Destro know the future light? [01:01:51] Speaker B: He might. [01:01:52] Speaker C: He is Scottish. [01:01:53] Speaker B: I mean. Yeah. So he's. [01:01:56] Speaker A: There's only one. And there's only one Destro. [01:01:59] Speaker B: There's only one Destro. [01:02:00] Speaker C: It's true. [01:02:02] Speaker A: Was there ever another Destro? [01:02:03] Speaker B: Well, I mean, he does come from a family. Yeah, he comes from a family of. [01:02:07] Speaker C: Of Scottish. [01:02:08] Speaker A: Of Destros. [01:02:09] Speaker B: Yeah, Destros. [01:02:10] Speaker C: The Destro family. [01:02:12] Speaker B: Yeah. They all. They all take the mask. [01:02:15] Speaker A: Yep. They were a very esteemed family. [01:02:18] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:02:18] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:02:20] Speaker C: And they. [01:02:20] Speaker A: They like silver. [01:02:21] Speaker C: Well, the. The iron mask goes back centuries to ancient relative, forefather, who is accused of a crime they didn't commit. And so they were condemned to wear the iron mask for the rest of their life. But then his family carried on the tradition as a sort of like, okay, we've been wrongly convicted and we're all going to wear the mask now. [01:02:45] Speaker B: Now do the crimes that we were accused of. We're going to become a crime syndicate family. [01:02:52] Speaker C: Doing the mask. [01:02:53] Speaker B: Doing things. Yeah. To earn the mask. Yes. Which is. Which is kind of weird because, like, as you. As you read some of these things, and it's like his family's so tied in, he doesn't need Cobra. [01:03:04] Speaker C: No, he's an arm. [01:03:05] Speaker B: Because he's. Yeah, I mean, he could. Cobra needs him. [01:03:09] Speaker C: Yeah. He's like, their biggest weapons supplier, which is why he's, like, always on hand. Because I'm like, fix this. Build us something new. [01:03:18] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:03:19] Speaker A: Well, on this page, where Scarlet escapes Storm Shadow. I mean, White Ninja Guy. [01:03:27] Speaker C: That's true. [01:03:28] Speaker A: Has the Cobra thing on his unit. [01:03:30] Speaker B: Well, he went and got an audition [01:03:32] Speaker C: because he passed the audition. [01:03:33] Speaker B: Yeah, I think. [01:03:34] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:03:34] Speaker C: But I did notice that, too. I was like, there's a little continuity here, you know? I'll bet. [01:03:39] Speaker A: Well, he shouldn't have. [01:03:40] Speaker C: We got to get a hold. [01:03:41] Speaker A: Looks like you just failed the audition. [01:03:42] Speaker C: No, we should. We should totally tell Larry about this. We can get a no prize. [01:03:47] Speaker A: I'm sure no one's told him. [01:03:49] Speaker B: Yeah, get a no prize. [01:03:50] Speaker A: Higher time. [01:03:51] Speaker C: I'm so glad. I bet no prize was Greg. Thank you. [01:03:54] Speaker A: I bet if Greg got out. Issues, like, in issue 24, there was already no prize for that. [01:04:01] Speaker C: Probably read the letters. [01:04:02] Speaker B: There might be. [01:04:03] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:04:05] Speaker B: It's like. Yeah, thanks a lot for pointing that out. [01:04:08] Speaker A: Thank you, TM Maple, for pointing out. [01:04:12] Speaker B: Do you think it would be TM Maple, or do you think it would [01:04:15] Speaker A: be our other Pouncy. [01:04:17] Speaker B: Te Pouncy. Who did. [01:04:20] Speaker C: The same person. Okay. [01:04:21] Speaker A: Yes. Do you not. You have to go look at some old letter columns and see the mighty Maple, TM Maple writing in every letter column. It's fantastic. [01:04:29] Speaker C: I will go check. [01:04:30] Speaker B: Bouncy. [01:04:32] Speaker A: It might be a D.C. thing. Yeah. [01:04:34] Speaker B: It would be super cool if somebody compiled all the letters and put them into one book. [01:04:39] Speaker C: Oh, that would be cool. [01:04:40] Speaker A: Would be cool. That's an idea. Yeah, that's an idea. Nobody had that idea before, Greg. [01:04:45] Speaker B: Nobody. [01:04:46] Speaker A: I've never thought of that before. [01:04:47] Speaker C: But here, though, like, on these next pages, like, when we see Snickers, like, break it in, the kind of stuff I was talking about earlier about how this. This was a far more adult comic book than it ever got credit for. Because you see Snake guys, like, straight up throw a knife into a guy. Like, he's not hurt. He's not disarmed. He's not knocked out. Like. No. He has a knife sticking out of his chest. And then Snake Eyes throws the other guy off the roof. Like, they're not. [01:05:17] Speaker A: Besides this broken neck that one dude has. [01:05:20] Speaker B: Yeah. He murders people. [01:05:21] Speaker C: They're not walking away from these. [01:05:24] Speaker B: No. And they probably have families. [01:05:28] Speaker C: They probably don't. [01:05:29] Speaker A: I like it how he falls outside of Destro's window. [01:05:34] Speaker C: I had to have an excuse For Destro to go. Leave him the charge. [01:05:39] Speaker A: Oh, no, he's okay. Look, the broken neck guy is okay. [01:05:43] Speaker C: Well, no, I mean, he. That's the guy that Snake Eyes stripped down and stole his costume or his uniform. A fool death. [01:05:50] Speaker B: He's not okay. [01:05:51] Speaker A: That's Snake Eyes. [01:05:52] Speaker B: Yeah, Dan, he's not okay. [01:05:56] Speaker A: Oh, no. That's not so good. Ninjas are mean. [01:06:00] Speaker C: Ninjas aren't. [01:06:00] Speaker B: Ninjas are mean. [01:06:01] Speaker C: Especially these red ninjas that we made on the next page. [01:06:04] Speaker B: Creative. Yeah. [01:06:07] Speaker A: Now, how does this portrayal of Snake Eyes hold up to the wonderful Snake Eyes movie that introduced Snake Eyes to the world? [01:06:13] Speaker C: Oh, my God. We [01:06:17] Speaker B: don't talk about it. I. I mean, you've made. Bro, you've broken Brian. Dan, you've broken the guest. [01:06:28] Speaker A: I broke the guest. [01:06:29] Speaker B: You broke the guest. [01:06:32] Speaker C: Live action. [01:06:36] Speaker B: But you don't like you. Don't you? Which of them is your least favorite? That's the biggest. [01:06:43] Speaker C: Honest. I would go worst. Was Snake eyes. Second worst. G.I. joe number one with. And then. [01:06:53] Speaker B: Okay. [01:06:53] Speaker C: The. Honestly, G.I. joe number two was watchable. [01:06:58] Speaker B: Was watchable with the. [01:07:02] Speaker A: The Rock. [01:07:02] Speaker C: So, like. [01:07:03] Speaker B: Yeah, the Rock. It's like, you got what in number one. Cover girl gets, like, killed, like, right off. [01:07:11] Speaker C: Does she get killed? [01:07:14] Speaker B: I'm pretty sure she gets killed. [01:07:15] Speaker C: Like, I wouldn't be surprised. [01:07:16] Speaker B: So they can get entrance into the pit and then. Yeah. Like, it's like, what the heck. Yeah, it's. It's pretty rough. Yeah. [01:07:27] Speaker C: The first one was not the best. [01:07:30] Speaker A: I'm gonna let you both know that I gave up after the first one. [01:07:33] Speaker C: Oh. The second one actually did a pretty good job with Snake. Like, that was the most. It was. [01:07:38] Speaker B: It was fun. [01:07:39] Speaker C: Accurate portrayal that. I even had the Blind Master. [01:07:44] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:07:45] Speaker C: Brought in Jinx. The second one. [01:07:48] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:07:48] Speaker C: If you got through the first one, you can handle this. But then stop there. Do not watch the Snake Eyes origin story. Just. [01:07:55] Speaker B: No, but it's. It's that third movie that really. Or the fourth movie that really gets you. And I know what you're thinking, Brian. You're like, what fourth movie? I think you're lying to me. Bumblebee. [01:08:11] Speaker C: I almost. [01:08:11] Speaker B: The secret G.I. joe. [01:08:13] Speaker C: Bumblebee. [01:08:14] Speaker B: The secret G.I. joe movie. Yes. Because that. [01:08:20] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:08:20] Speaker B: That whole moment at the very end, and it's like, hands in the card. [01:08:24] Speaker C: Right. [01:08:25] Speaker B: And it's like, [01:08:30] Speaker A: For real. That's not making it better. [01:08:32] Speaker B: No, it's. No, the Bumblebee movie is, bar none, the best Transformer movie probably out there. [01:08:41] Speaker C: But Bumblebee really picked up the Stock After Transformers 2 through what, five you [01:08:48] Speaker B: know, though, I. I do like. I do like that one where Wahlberg's like, he's Transformer. I can't even do it justice. But [01:09:00] Speaker A: is that like the Fast and Furious Transformers crossover? [01:09:03] Speaker B: No, there's no Transformers crossover with fast. Why not fast? [01:09:07] Speaker C: Somebody get Hollywood on the line, right? [01:09:09] Speaker B: Not yet. Not yet. But if there is, I'll be there. The funny thing is, I love myself. [01:09:15] Speaker C: If there was a Fast and the Furious Transformers crossover, Vin Diesel would still be the most robotic delivery on that set. [01:09:24] Speaker B: I hear it. But then the question is, will it. Okay, then does Hobbs turn around and all of a sudden pop out? It would be like, I've been part of GI Joe. [01:09:34] Speaker C: Jason Statham. [01:09:37] Speaker B: Not. Not. I'm sorry. Not Shaw. This Shaw come out. And the Rock. Yeah, yeah. And I'm. [01:09:47] Speaker C: Oh, that. I've watched. [01:09:49] Speaker A: I've watched zero of those movies. [01:09:50] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:09:51] Speaker C: Them is because he was, like, on loan from. [01:09:54] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [01:09:55] Speaker C: Or whatever. [01:09:56] Speaker B: Yeah. So that's the crossover. So it's a huge GI Joe Fast and the Furious Transformers crossover because it's all owned by Universal now, right, so. [01:10:05] Speaker C: Oh, I think so. [01:10:07] Speaker A: And that's where Moana comes in. [01:10:09] Speaker B: Well, holy Dan. Two different properties all together. But thank you. [01:10:16] Speaker C: I mean, you're welcome. That whole pygmy island did transform while they were trying to escape, so. [01:10:24] Speaker B: Ah. [01:10:25] Speaker A: That. [01:10:25] Speaker B: It was a tr. It's a transform. [01:10:29] Speaker A: I knew it. Well, in this comic book, much better than anything we've been talking about. [01:10:34] Speaker C: Wahlberg. [01:10:36] Speaker B: I know, I know. [01:10:37] Speaker C: I can't help it. [01:10:40] Speaker A: He could have been a contender. [01:10:41] Speaker B: His best movie is the one with the plants, though. That's my favorite one of. Of Mark Wahlberg. [01:10:46] Speaker C: Oh, okay. [01:10:47] Speaker A: The plants. [01:10:48] Speaker C: The M. Night Shyamalan movie. [01:10:50] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:10:51] Speaker C: The first time I saw a trailer for a Shyamalan move. You know, Dad's like, how. How. [01:10:57] Speaker B: That's only because John Lenny was almost in it. [01:10:59] Speaker C: Is he? [01:10:59] Speaker A: I. [01:11:00] Speaker B: And that's why. I mean. Yeah, briefly. [01:11:03] Speaker A: I'm just gonna be sorry. Are we breaking right? Like, sorry. Well, yeah, we. We all agree that Dan said I [01:11:11] Speaker B: didn't talk enough the last episode. Now I'm talking too much. I'm sorry. [01:11:15] Speaker A: We all agree that the Departed is the best movie Mark Wahlberg is in. Because that's. There's no argument. [01:11:20] Speaker B: Yeah, well, I mean, that's true. That's hand. Yeah. I mean, yeah. [01:11:27] Speaker A: It's also the best movie Matt Damon has been in. Sorry. Goodwill hunting. [01:11:31] Speaker B: I mean, is it, though. Have you seen the Odyssey? [01:11:36] Speaker C: I have not. [01:11:37] Speaker A: I have not seen the Odyssey yet. You haven't either. [01:11:40] Speaker C: You know what? Last night or not last night. Sunday night, I went to go Spider man. And when I got the. The digital marquee, it was like, spider Man. Spider Man, Spider Man. Spider Man. The Odyssey. Spider Man. Spider Man. Spider Man. The Odyssey, Spider man. Like, all 20 screens were either Spider man or the Odyssey. See? [01:11:58] Speaker B: Wow. [01:12:00] Speaker C: Really? Just putting it all in two baskets there. [01:12:04] Speaker B: Yeah, it feels that's. That's very like a 90s setup of like going to the movie theater and seeing I only got two choices. Yeah, it's either Spider man or the Odyssey. I'm going to buy a ticket for Spider man and then walk over to the Odyssey afterwards. I'm not saying you should do that. People don't do that. [01:12:21] Speaker C: No, what you should do is buy a ticket for the Odyssey and then go see Spider man. Because the Odyssey is longer, so you're [01:12:26] Speaker B: gonna have to pee so bad. [01:12:28] Speaker C: Oh, yeah, yeah. [01:12:31] Speaker B: So what anyways, was. [01:12:33] Speaker A: I. I. I mean, I have so many questions, but I do need to go back to the comics. But, like, number one, was George Clooney in the Odyssey? [01:12:43] Speaker C: No, [01:12:46] Speaker A: but he made the Odyssey. They've already done that. [01:12:48] Speaker C: Oh, brother. [01:12:49] Speaker A: I already saw that movie. [01:12:50] Speaker C: It was great. That was the best version of the Odyssey. [01:12:53] Speaker B: So good. [01:12:54] Speaker A: Yeah. So I've already seen the Odyssey, so do I need to go see it again? [01:12:58] Speaker B: I mean, Why not? Both double features. [01:13:06] Speaker A: All right. Yeah. So apparently back to the comic. Yes, Storm Shadow has recruited in his short time, and Cobra already recruited a team of ninjas. [01:13:16] Speaker C: Well, the Red Ninjas are the ninjas of the Arashi conga family. [01:13:22] Speaker A: Whoa. We don't know that yet. [01:13:23] Speaker C: No, we don't yet. That's what's so exciting about this book is we don't know who these Red Ninjas are. The first appearance of the Red Ninjas as well. [01:13:34] Speaker A: Huh? So one of these ninjas has size and one of them has a sword. [01:13:39] Speaker C: And then one has a. [01:13:40] Speaker A: These look like other turtley ninjas. [01:13:43] Speaker B: Hey, hey, now. [01:13:45] Speaker C: I mean, people back in the 80s only knew about so many ninja weapons. [01:13:52] Speaker B: That's true. [01:13:53] Speaker A: Well, that's because the rest of the ninja weapons were invisible. Yeah, because the ninjas. Well, Scarlet here is taking care of business. She does not need to be rescued. [01:14:04] Speaker C: No, she does not need to be rescued. And those guys are gonna have massive havocs when they wake up. If they wake up. [01:14:10] Speaker B: Yes, if they wake up. Brain damage. [01:14:13] Speaker A: Well, I believe she just murdered them. And she tied the chain around their [01:14:17] Speaker C: neck and then crashed through them. [01:14:19] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, you don't really get up from that. [01:14:22] Speaker C: No. [01:14:23] Speaker A: And is very happy. She takes the glider. What's it called again? [01:14:27] Speaker C: The Cobra claw. [01:14:30] Speaker A: The cobra claw. [01:14:31] Speaker C: Yes. [01:14:31] Speaker B: Oh, that. [01:14:33] Speaker A: Not. Not like the iron claw. [01:14:35] Speaker B: No, no. [01:14:37] Speaker C: Although, like, that's what it should have been. Like, if Jake the Snake and the Iron Shake ever did a team up, their finisher would be the. Or the cobra claw. [01:14:46] Speaker B: A cobra claw. Oh, that would be so cool. [01:14:49] Speaker A: I didn't realize where you're going there, because I was like, neither of them use the claw. No, but I, I, I see where you're going. Okay, wait. [01:14:58] Speaker C: Iron Sheik didn't use. [01:14:59] Speaker A: It wasn't Car. Carrie Von A. No. [01:15:01] Speaker C: Who used the claw? Who's. [01:15:03] Speaker A: Baron Von Rashi and Carrie Von Eric. And all the Von Erics used the clock. Okay, that's, that's as long as they were alive. Not funny. [01:15:14] Speaker C: Do. Do we count. [01:15:16] Speaker B: Wow. Bringing it down. [01:15:17] Speaker C: Do we count the use of Mr. Sepco as a claw? [01:15:22] Speaker A: No, that is the, like, nerve. It's a. [01:15:24] Speaker C: It's the mandible claw. [01:15:26] Speaker A: Yeah, the mandible claw is different. Nerf. Yeah. [01:15:29] Speaker B: Okay. [01:15:30] Speaker A: Doesn't count. You had the, the head claw and the stomach claw. [01:15:33] Speaker C: There wasn't a fake claw. [01:15:36] Speaker A: Well, it's like. Yeah, you grab the head. It's like. [01:15:39] Speaker C: Okay. [01:15:40] Speaker B: Yeah. I just had to say. And, And Travis would say this if he was here. There is no law when there's the claw. [01:15:49] Speaker A: Travis would not say that. Travis. Travis would have left. He would have said. What are you guys talking about? I'm leaving. [01:15:55] Speaker B: No, no, no. I mean, he's talking about white claws. [01:15:58] Speaker C: And, I mean, the Von Erichs were pretty white, so. [01:16:10] Speaker A: The, the iron. [01:16:11] Speaker C: Wow. [01:16:12] Speaker A: Okay. So [01:16:15] Speaker C: Snake eyes murder somebody else. [01:16:18] Speaker A: So Storm Shadow looks like he's about to be murdered because he goes to find Scarlet, but she's not where she was captured. So looking down. Oh, wait, no, I went forward. [01:16:31] Speaker C: He's wearing black. [01:16:31] Speaker A: No. Sorry. [01:16:33] Speaker B: Yeah. Snake eyes. [01:16:34] Speaker A: Oh, snake eyes. Sorry. [01:16:35] Speaker C: Wow. [01:16:36] Speaker A: Snake eyes. [01:16:36] Speaker B: He's got his ninjas confused. [01:16:39] Speaker A: And red ninja get. Red ninja sword guy. [01:16:42] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:16:43] Speaker A: Is trying to get him, and he, like, takes out red ninja sword guy. Really? [01:16:47] Speaker C: And then crushes his skull with the manhole cover. [01:16:50] Speaker A: Is he dead? [01:16:51] Speaker C: I. I mean, I don't think he's sleeping after having a manhole cover slammed onto. [01:16:58] Speaker A: Hey, Brian. [01:17:00] Speaker B: Should. We'll tell him this. [01:17:02] Speaker A: We'll. [01:17:02] Speaker B: We'll. [01:17:02] Speaker A: We'll. [01:17:02] Speaker B: We'll spoil this out at the end. [01:17:04] Speaker A: This next ninja. This next ninja gonna be dead. [01:17:08] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. This was actually written as an homage to Raiders of the Lost Ark. [01:17:14] Speaker B: Ah. [01:17:15] Speaker A: Side ninja Spinning his. He gets a grenade thrown at him just in his face, and he explodes. [01:17:25] Speaker C: Literally explode. You see your side, like, flying. [01:17:29] Speaker A: Yeah, it's not so good. [01:17:31] Speaker B: No, no, not good. [01:17:35] Speaker A: And then this next other weapon, Ninja guy. [01:17:38] Speaker C: I love this. Like, all joking aside, like, the artwork on the sequence of this fight of the dude with spike ball and Storm Shadow on the other side, and the way this thing catches it, wraps the chain around the red ninja's face and then throws him into Storm Shadow sword, and then jumps over and double stomps on Storm Shadow Spade. Like, I just think that was beautifully illustrated. I think Larry did a great job with the layout with the panel construction here. And then we get a little. We get a little sneak preview here of, like, Snake Eyes is sleeve being ripped. Oh, that. That helps lead up to the big spoiler at the end. [01:18:19] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:18:19] Speaker A: Red Ninja dead, too. [01:18:21] Speaker C: Oh, Red ninja super dead. Like, Storm Shadow just slashed his back. [01:18:26] Speaker A: Oh, is this, like, wearing red Star Trek shirts? Yes. [01:18:29] Speaker C: I mean, the red ninjas do die. [01:18:31] Speaker B: Yes. [01:18:33] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:18:35] Speaker A: Don't wear red. [01:18:36] Speaker C: I mean, the ham ninjas. [01:18:37] Speaker B: Daredevil is. [01:18:40] Speaker C: Daredevil's like, the one guy who can wear red, and he doesn't die, no matter how much he gets the kick. [01:18:49] Speaker B: True, true. [01:18:50] Speaker A: Well, Scarlet sneeze. Snake Eyes. [01:18:53] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:18:53] Speaker A: Goes down, stands right in front of him. [01:18:58] Speaker C: Well, she's. [01:18:59] Speaker A: Storm Shadow throws a sword. Yep. She's gonna die. [01:19:04] Speaker C: Well, she's. She's ready to take the sword for. For Snake Eyes, her true love. [01:19:10] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:19:12] Speaker A: Snake Eyes goes. [01:19:14] Speaker C: He does that thing disproved on Mythbusters. Catches it. [01:19:20] Speaker A: Doesn't work. Can't catch it. [01:19:22] Speaker C: Although the funny thing is, like, this move does come back in the GI Joe lore, where, like, that is that the final test of the Arashikage clan is, like, you're supposed to have a candle on your head, and you're supposed to catch the sword before they can snuff it. Like, so somebody swings at your head, and you're supposed to catch it. And when Snake Eyes does it, he's cutting, and Storm Shadow has got the candle on his head. If Snake Eyes cuts and Storm Shadow catches it, and all the other ninja masters are like, oh, Storm Shadow, pass the test. And then the candle splits in half, like, while it's still lit. And the masters are all like, oh, has the best sword work. Like, he cut the candle without extinguishing the flame. And Snake. Storm Shadow had to catch it on the upswing. That's amazing. [01:20:13] Speaker A: Wow. [01:20:13] Speaker B: Crazy. [01:20:14] Speaker A: Find out on next page that Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes Are best friends. [01:20:19] Speaker C: Well, they're. They're part of the same ninja clan. [01:20:22] Speaker B: They're that family. [01:20:26] Speaker C: What. [01:20:26] Speaker B: What's crazy is that also means that Snake Eyes just killed three of his family members. [01:20:33] Speaker C: Well, I mean, I don't know if I literal. [01:20:36] Speaker B: I mean, not literally family, but I mean, ninja family that seems to claim. [01:20:41] Speaker A: That seems a little messed up, but it is. [01:20:43] Speaker C: Was kicked out of the. Because they all thought that he killed or no. [01:20:49] Speaker B: Yes. [01:20:50] Speaker C: Killed the Hard Master. [01:20:52] Speaker B: Well, they thought. They thought that Snake Eyes killed the Hard Master because Storm Shadow said that he did. The Storm Shadow killed the Hard Master and blames the Hard Master? [01:21:01] Speaker C: No, Zartan was masquerading as Storm Shadow [01:21:04] Speaker B: as the Hard Shadow, and he was [01:21:06] Speaker C: trying to kill Snake Eyes because Cobra Commander hired Zartan the mercenary to get revenge on Snake Eyes and est. [01:21:14] Speaker A: Him. [01:21:15] Speaker B: Yes. [01:21:16] Speaker A: Did you say the Hard Master? [01:21:18] Speaker B: Yes, The Hard Master. [01:21:19] Speaker C: Ninja clan. The Master of the Arashi Kage. [01:21:22] Speaker B: Are you. Are you intrigued? [01:21:23] Speaker C: Do you. [01:21:24] Speaker B: Do you need a Hard Master? [01:21:26] Speaker C: I mean, there was the Hard Master, the Soft Master, the Blind Master. [01:21:32] Speaker B: He's like, hard master and Soft master. [01:21:34] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. [01:21:35] Speaker A: There's Deep Lore man and Fistor. [01:21:39] Speaker B: Yes. Fisto and Ram Man. Give him some head. [01:21:41] Speaker C: And Mechanic, [01:21:45] Speaker B: smack a neck, Dan. [01:21:48] Speaker A: Yeah, this can be. Sounds like a dungeon. [01:21:52] Speaker B: It does sound like it. [01:21:53] Speaker C: I mean, they were in a dungeon. Well, Snake Eyes just rescued her from the dungeon. [01:21:59] Speaker B: He did? Yeah. She was on. [01:22:01] Speaker A: Starting to like this even more. [01:22:02] Speaker B: She was on a giant plug, Dan. [01:22:05] Speaker A: Oh, she was. This is very interesting now. [01:22:11] Speaker C: Well, there's some deep lore, man. I'm telling you. G.I. joe keeps going. He goes deep. [01:22:16] Speaker B: The lore goes so deep. [01:22:18] Speaker A: There's some incredibly deep lore. Well, [01:22:22] Speaker B: it's a. It. I mean, honestly, though, the. The cool thing, though, is that, like, it starts one, and it just continues to go through. All the books tie together so well, and all the different characters, no matter how big or small they are, have a significant part in the Joe lore. [01:22:43] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:22:44] Speaker B: You know, and it's pretty cool because you're like, even. Even. You're like, you know, your base, your. Your first 10. Your first 10 Joes. Right. And you're. You get those. You get those stories and those backstories and stuff, and. And you're like, oh, wow. And then as they. [01:23:00] Speaker C: It's cool. Yeah. Did you know Larry Hama wrote those file cards on the back of every, like, Joe action figure? [01:23:08] Speaker B: Did not know that. [01:23:08] Speaker A: He. [01:23:09] Speaker B: He wrote them. Like, I mean, I. I assume that, but I did not know that he wrote, like, all of them. That's cool. [01:23:17] Speaker C: So, I mean, he knew that's. [01:23:20] Speaker A: And he's still writing it. [01:23:21] Speaker C: He is. They brought him back after years. And what was cool about it was when IDW took it over because the last Marvel GI Joe was issue 155. And there had been a few other series from like DDP Image had like a GI Joe Extreme series for a while. And when IDW finally got the rights and they were like, okay, we're going back to the original. We're going to hire Larry Hama to come back and write it. They didn't start with issue one. They started with issue 156. [01:23:51] Speaker B: I went right back into the. Into the numbering. Yeah. [01:23:55] Speaker A: And then they launched the other book. Right. So that's Real American Hero. And then the other book is Joshua, the one Joshua Williamson. Right. [01:24:03] Speaker C: Yeah. And they're. They're not part of the same universe because the Josh Williamson one is part of what they're calling the Energon universe, which is where you've got Transformers. [01:24:11] Speaker B: And I've heard. [01:24:13] Speaker C: I would have to confirms it, but I'm pretty sure I want to say they were also going to bring in like the Micronauts and maybe like Rom the Space Knight. [01:24:20] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:24:21] Speaker C: And like all of those old Hasbro toys from the. [01:24:25] Speaker B: And GoBots because. And probably GoBots too. Because. Because. Because they brought that. Okay. This is. This is the minor ness. So. No, no, no. I'm not saying Gobots like original line, but Gobots have been brought into Transformer line. So leader one, Leader one becomes a Jeep and then they send him to the moon to. So they have a Leader 1 Jeep in Transformers that just patrols the moon. He's not even. He's not even a cool. Like a plane. [01:24:56] Speaker A: Is it like moon patrol where he can just jump over those holes? [01:25:00] Speaker C: Who showed up at school with GoBots and we're like, I'm gonna play with the Transformers kids. And the Transformers kids were like, why don't you take your gobot and go patrol on the moon over in the sandbox? And we're going to be over here playing Transformers, but you protect the moon for us. GoBot Kid. [01:25:16] Speaker B: That's where I was at. [01:25:18] Speaker C: I didn't even have go. I was watching all those kids play, like, reading a book. [01:25:25] Speaker A: Brian. I really wanted some Transformers, so I got some, but I only got the least expensive Transformers. But I got four Transformers. Well, I did have five. I had five. I had the fire truck. I don't even remember what the fire truck is. [01:25:44] Speaker B: He got Wheeljack, the fire truck. The one that winds up on the back, it's got the drill and it flips over and turns into a transformer in its own. You don't even get to transform him. [01:25:55] Speaker A: I believe you do know this story, Brian. You're gonna be so sad for little Danny Shabbat, because I had four of the Constructicons and I would put them together and I had one leg and one arm and I would walk it around because I. And I never could get the other two Constructicons. [01:26:15] Speaker C: Oh, man. Oh, I love that. [01:26:20] Speaker A: And, yeah, I guess. Is that four? One, two. No, three. Well, no, there were. It's six. [01:26:25] Speaker B: You're almost there. Yeah, you're almost. [01:26:27] Speaker C: Yeah, there were six. [01:26:28] Speaker A: There were six and I had four. [01:26:31] Speaker C: The funny thing about that is I remember when I was in middle school, I walked to school and there was a Kmart between my house and the middle school. And so my mom would give me $2 a day for lunch money because I'm that old. $2 would buy you a school lunch. Yeah, but The Kmart sold GI Joe action figures for $3. So I figured out I just like skimped on lunch for like three days a week. I could get like half a lunch and buy myself a GI Joe action figure on my way home from school. Yeah, that was how I built up my collection. [01:27:09] Speaker A: Oh, you could have, like gone to Kmart and got like chocolate and then sold it. Oh, yeah, and then got twice as many. [01:27:20] Speaker B: Holy crap. [01:27:22] Speaker C: You could. [01:27:22] Speaker B: Yeah, you could have sold that chocolate. Broke off pieces. You could have been the chocolate dealer in the playground selling. Or you bought sprees and popped them off for a nickel a pop. People would have. Yeah, I mean. Yeah, I mean, just imagine, just imagine selling sprees to people and they don't want to sell it. They don't want to buy it for a nickel. They only got a penny. So you put it in your mouth and you give them the. The sucked on spree for a penny. [01:27:51] Speaker C: I don't think anybody would. [01:27:52] Speaker B: But back in the 80s, it was back. Back in the day, it's fine because nobody thought about it, you know, like, you know, it's fine, it's fine. You know, [01:28:02] Speaker C: I don't think I ever want to be. [01:28:04] Speaker A: Well, well, my dealer. [01:28:05] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:28:08] Speaker B: Bought a PEZ dispenser and just dispensed pez. [01:28:11] Speaker C: You know, man, next time you come to Rose City Comic Con, I'm going to walk up you. Hey, Greg, you want some spree? [01:28:18] Speaker A: Oh, we should go to Rose City ComicCon this year. Maybe we should Go. [01:28:21] Speaker C: I will be there. [01:28:22] Speaker B: Oh, my God. I. I'm. I'm scared because Brian will try to give me some sprees and I'll be like, no, dude, I only want those peanut M&M's, but I want them pre shelled. You know the pre shell peanuts shelled [01:28:36] Speaker C: or are they pre shelled? How do you pre shell it? Is that like pre toasting something? [01:28:40] Speaker B: Yeah, you know, like you. You. You take the chocolate off. Yeah. Pre shell. Yeah. I mean. [01:28:50] Speaker A: Oh, I put something on the screen. [01:28:52] Speaker C: Oh, what is this? [01:28:53] Speaker B: Nighthawk? [01:28:54] Speaker A: What? [01:28:54] Speaker B: The Kickstarter? How far are we? How close are you? How many people do you need to back this thing? [01:29:00] Speaker C: Did I. [01:29:01] Speaker B: What do we need? What did you fund? [01:29:03] Speaker C: Did you. Did you just reveal that I'm funded? I did, yeah. I have not looked at it. [01:29:11] Speaker A: But that doesn't mean. But that doesn't mean to stop. [01:29:14] Speaker C: No, absolutely, please. Backing this goal, we have a stretch goal that I'm. [01:29:18] Speaker A: Yes, the stretch goal. [01:29:19] Speaker C: If you scroll down, go for the stretch. [01:29:21] Speaker B: We. [01:29:22] Speaker C: I am so excited about that. We are sending out a Investigations branded matchbooks. So Kent Allen, our private eye, he runs a investigations. We are getting custom matchbooks made with the phone number to A plus investigations on it if we hit 1500. So we're at a thousand right now. That's the matchbook right there. [01:29:47] Speaker B: Okay. Yep. [01:29:49] Speaker A: Buy More. [01:29:49] Speaker C: That's it. [01:29:50] Speaker A: Buy More. [01:29:50] Speaker C: And little Easter egg for you here. Pennsylvania 2, 1882. That is the alphanumeric version of Edward Hopper's birthday. [01:30:02] Speaker B: Oh. What? [01:30:03] Speaker C: Okay, so he was born on July 22nd. So pa. So seven. Two, two. 1882. [01:30:16] Speaker B: Nice. [01:30:16] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:30:17] Speaker A: Okay. And now I'm gonna have to remember to edit those back in here because we talked about it. [01:30:22] Speaker B: So. Yeah. [01:30:22] Speaker C: Oh, my God. [01:30:23] Speaker A: Yes, I will. [01:30:24] Speaker C: So cool. [01:30:25] Speaker A: Wow, that is awesome. [01:30:26] Speaker B: Congrats. [01:30:27] Speaker C: Thank you. [01:30:27] Speaker B: Congrats. [01:30:28] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:30:30] Speaker A: This will be announced only five days later. [01:30:32] Speaker C: Okay. [01:30:34] Speaker A: On the show, but it can get [01:30:35] Speaker C: more fun to keep going, please. [01:30:38] Speaker A: Yes. [01:30:38] Speaker B: Let's go. [01:30:39] Speaker A: So we'll provide a link to Nighthawks. [01:30:41] Speaker C: Love it. Appreciate it. Definitely check out Valentine's artwork. He's got his website, I think I've got Maddie's Instagram that I sent over to you as well. Matiks, our artist, he's incredible. [01:30:56] Speaker B: Cool. [01:30:58] Speaker A: And yeah, I have some Valentine barker stuff I think I already. So just appealed to me at a show. So I grabbed him. [01:31:06] Speaker C: He's. He's doing amazing things right now. He moved to the country recently and he's been doing a lot of painting again, like oil paint and can't say enough good things about him. Super nice guy. Incredible artist. Does his own style, but he can also recreate others. I'm super lucky to be working with him. [01:31:28] Speaker A: Well, if you listen, last week Randy Emberlin popped for the art when we showed him for which art. [01:31:34] Speaker B: So. Yeah. [01:31:35] Speaker A: The night. [01:31:36] Speaker C: Oh, really? [01:31:36] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:31:37] Speaker C: This your book? [01:31:38] Speaker B: Silly goose. [01:31:40] Speaker C: I gotta see if I can take him a copy then at Rose. [01:31:44] Speaker A: Yeah. So he definitely mentioned he loves black and white. We learned something about Randy last week. He's colorblind. [01:31:50] Speaker B: Really? Yeah. [01:31:52] Speaker C: Wow. [01:31:52] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:31:53] Speaker B: He thought the colors look fantastic in this book. [01:31:55] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:31:56] Speaker C: That is the black and white colors. [01:32:00] Speaker A: He likes doing stuff in black and white because he's colorblind. So he likes the black and white shading stuff. [01:32:06] Speaker C: Yeah. So please. [01:32:07] Speaker B: But really good. [01:32:08] Speaker C: Thank you for telling him about the book. I hope he picked up a copy. That'd be great. [01:32:13] Speaker A: And we'll make sure there's a link to this book here at the end of the podcast. In the podcast. At the end of the podcast. In the podcast. In the notes. If you go to the notes. If you look at the notes where we post this thing. [01:32:23] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:32:23] Speaker A: And. And by the way, I told Greg this week because we never asked for this. But people don't realize that because I post this. I post the audio version on Instagram and. And Facebook and everywhere X and blue sky and. But we also, you know, we have the YouTube version where you can see us. [01:32:45] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:32:46] Speaker A: Talking about things. So what would really help us if people watched it. But also they like subscribe to it. So then they. [01:32:53] Speaker C: Absolutely. [01:32:54] Speaker A: When the things come out and please and comment still listen on your podcast player. That doesn't change anything. Like subscribing to it. It's like free and stuff. It doesn't. [01:33:03] Speaker C: I'm gonna. [01:33:04] Speaker A: All you have to do is like one little button and then. [01:33:07] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:33:07] Speaker A: You're subscribed. In fact, we had like four new subscribers last week. [01:33:12] Speaker B: What? Yeah. [01:33:14] Speaker C: Was. [01:33:15] Speaker A: So if we got like even more new subscribers, I'd be cool. [01:33:18] Speaker B: That's. I mean that four is better than what we had before. [01:33:22] Speaker C: That's four. [01:33:23] Speaker A: Can't handle listening to all of this. You're not here anymore. What if they can't handle listening to all of it? They're not here anymore. [01:33:31] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:33:31] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:33:32] Speaker A: But we do put up little shorts too, so you don't have to watch the whole thing. Like you could just watch a little clips. [01:33:37] Speaker B: They're Smurf shorts. [01:33:38] Speaker C: They're little ones. [01:33:40] Speaker B: Gentlemen. [01:33:41] Speaker C: I will make sure that spread the word. [01:33:44] Speaker A: Is that like pre toasting Are you [01:33:46] Speaker B: pre posting or retoing? Pre. Pre. [01:33:51] Speaker C: Post. Toast. [01:33:52] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:33:52] Speaker C: Post toasting. [01:33:53] Speaker B: Pre posting. [01:33:54] Speaker A: Toasty posting. [01:33:55] Speaker C: I will posty. Toasties Toast. Post the hosties. [01:34:01] Speaker A: Tasty. I like it. I think. [01:34:05] Speaker B: Oh, that's something. [01:34:08] Speaker A: I think we may have made it to the end, but I. There is one more thing. [01:34:12] Speaker C: The roast. [01:34:14] Speaker A: Well, Greg, I can't believe you didn't mention it. Because if you want to relive your childhood. Oh, you can always show up at the Retro Emporium on Meeker street in Kent, Washington. [01:34:24] Speaker B: It's true. You can. I mean, like, we've had. I mean, heck, we. We've had some amazing things happening there the last couple weeks. We had a video shoot there for recording artist Nevic. We had a CD launch party for Punching Grumpy. We've had amazing artists swing by and draw some cool art. So if you're in the. In the Northwest and you've heard of Eli Wolf and seen him at shows, you can pick up some of his art. [01:34:57] Speaker C: Who? [01:34:58] Speaker A: This guy? [01:34:58] Speaker B: Oh, you are at your house. Yeah, that guy right there. Yeah, right on. That guy. I might have a shirt or two of his. [01:35:07] Speaker C: So. [01:35:08] Speaker B: Yeah. And then. Yeah, it's. It's pretty cool. [01:35:11] Speaker C: Or. [01:35:11] Speaker B: And you can always find me most weekends, most evenings, sometimes there. But recently there is a new addition to the store. Oh, I've heard. [01:35:22] Speaker A: I've heard that you replaced the best employee you know who wasn't mentioned here. [01:35:28] Speaker C: Well, who? [01:35:28] Speaker A: Squatch. A man wasn't mentioned because the squash has been replaced. [01:35:34] Speaker C: You replace. [01:35:36] Speaker B: We can't replace the squat. Squatch. O man hasn't been replaced. The Squatcher man is on vacation right now. I'm sorry. It's the summer months. He's out doing what the squacho does. He's. [01:35:47] Speaker A: How long has he been on vacation? It's been weeks since I called out that the Squatcher man was missing. [01:35:53] Speaker B: He's not missing, Dan Man. He is. He's out. There's wildfires. [01:35:57] Speaker A: Sasquatch hunting stickers in your store. [01:36:00] Speaker B: Dan, Dan, Dan, Dan. [01:36:04] Speaker C: How can you sell Squatch? Hunting. [01:36:05] Speaker B: Hunting. Hunting. [01:36:07] Speaker A: Agreed. Work environments. One Jiu Jitsu Lawyer Paul. [01:36:12] Speaker B: Wow. [01:36:13] Speaker A: Squacho Man's gonna seek him out. [01:36:15] Speaker C: Jiu Jitsu lawyer Paul. [01:36:16] Speaker B: See what happens. [01:36:17] Speaker C: Talk to you? [01:36:19] Speaker A: Yep. [01:36:20] Speaker B: Wow, Dan. Wow. And I was going to talk about Dave, the new employee at the Retro Emporium. Dave, Dave. Is it just Squatch, the big change? [01:36:30] Speaker A: Does he have hand. Does he have. Does he have. Wait. Does he have a daughter with red hair? [01:36:35] Speaker B: No. No, he does not. [01:36:37] Speaker C: He doesn't Sell birds. [01:36:38] Speaker B: But he does not. [01:36:41] Speaker C: He. [01:36:42] Speaker A: Does he go to the Pied Piper often? [01:36:45] Speaker B: No. [01:36:46] Speaker C: Does he have a brother that's just down the street, show about the Great White north with. Yes. Okay. [01:36:53] Speaker B: No, no, no, no, no. [01:36:57] Speaker A: Okay. [01:36:58] Speaker B: But it's odd because he's taller than me and people mistake him for me. [01:37:05] Speaker A: Is he friends with Tom? [01:37:09] Speaker B: Tom and Dave? [01:37:11] Speaker A: Because everybody's friends with Tom. Because it's coming back. MySpace is coming back. [01:37:15] Speaker B: It is true. MySpace is coming back. I can't wait till it comes back. And then I'm gonna get back on MySpace and I'm gonna get my LiveJournal set back up again, too. It's gonna be a fantastic time. [01:37:25] Speaker C: I will have to get to go back to the early 2000s on MySpace. [01:37:29] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It'd be great. And you, too, can have fantastic times on my space. [01:37:36] Speaker A: And this whole time, you've just been taught. Trying to talk about this nice employee, [01:37:39] Speaker B: Dave, and, yeah, he's a great dude. So he's fantastic. Thanks, Dan. [01:37:45] Speaker A: I know Dave's there, and that's why I never get invited to the store anymore. [01:37:49] Speaker B: Well, I know, because, you know, I can't have so many people in the shop at the same time. I mean, where would the customer stand? [01:37:54] Speaker C: I was going to say. Do you really want to tell people that, like, don't everybody come to the store? Just not all at once, because we can't handle it. [01:38:00] Speaker B: It's a tiny place. It's so funny when people come in [01:38:03] Speaker A: and they're not tiny. [01:38:04] Speaker B: It's not. It's not tiny, but it's awesome. Well, it is. It is funny when people come in and they're like. And they're so used to it being like, their own store for a minute or, you know, like, they're. When they come in on. On a weekday and it's quiet, and they come in on a Saturday, and it's just. [01:38:21] Speaker A: It's. [01:38:21] Speaker B: It is humming with people, and they're like, oh, wow, you guys are busy. And I'm like, no, this is a Saturday. You're just not used to this. And it's like, there are 30 people in here. Yeah, this is a Saturday. [01:38:33] Speaker C: That's what we do. [01:38:35] Speaker B: And they're like, people come to the store. [01:38:38] Speaker A: It's. [01:38:38] Speaker B: It's crazy. It's wild times. That's why we had to hire another person named Dave. [01:38:43] Speaker A: So that was. That was the thing we hadn't talked about. [01:38:45] Speaker B: And of course, the restaurant that. [01:38:47] Speaker A: The Retro Emporium. [01:38:48] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [01:38:49] Speaker A: On Meeker street in Kent, Washington. [01:38:50] Speaker C: Washington. [01:38:52] Speaker A: Historic Kent, Washington in the universe. I'll take it second best city. The third. I mean, I, I, I said just above Kaiser. [01:39:04] Speaker C: Kaiser, Oregon. [01:39:05] Speaker B: Wow. Yeah, I mean, I do have family that came from there. [01:39:09] Speaker C: I used to live in Salem. I work in Salem. I've been to Kaiser. I don't know why any would see. [01:39:18] Speaker A: I was right. Kent. Kent's new motto, we're better than Kaiser, Oregon. [01:39:23] Speaker C: Put it on the side. Welcome to Kent. Better than. [01:39:26] Speaker A: And look. We're better than Kaiser. [01:39:28] Speaker B: Better than Kaiser. [01:39:29] Speaker C: That is true. [01:39:30] Speaker B: And people all around won't get it until they start looking at the news and they'll say, oh, that makes so much sense. [01:39:36] Speaker A: Oh, they're like, oh, that's where that bricks and minifig store was. [01:39:41] Speaker C: I actually that I work with, not in the same department, but a friend of mine that I work with is friends with Brian Mansell because he works at Salem Hospital. [01:39:51] Speaker A: Well, they better give his Legos back because I'm gonna start tracking them down. [01:39:55] Speaker C: That's, it's, it's been a wild story to follow. [01:40:00] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. Some crazy goes back. [01:40:04] Speaker A: Give those Legos back. [01:40:06] Speaker B: Let the Legos free. Lego. The Legos. [01:40:11] Speaker A: Those, those, those bricks and minifig owners are. I feel bad for the franchises, but [01:40:19] Speaker C: I mean, the people who go, the people who do have honest franchise because they love Lego, they want to do the right, like, cool, okay. But finding out you secretly work for an evil corporation, it's just, that's got [01:40:32] Speaker A: to be a hard, evil corporation with a twirly mustache. I mean, you can't get more evil than having a twirly mustache. [01:40:38] Speaker C: Commander didn't even have a twirly mustache. Except for that brief. [01:40:41] Speaker A: No, he didn't destroy. [01:40:45] Speaker B: And that was more, that was, that was a thing that he just. [01:40:47] Speaker C: I know that was a fake mustache that he put. [01:40:50] Speaker B: Yeah, it was a fake mustache, but a really cool costume he had. [01:40:55] Speaker A: I have. [01:40:56] Speaker B: Yeah. [01:40:56] Speaker A: I've exhausted my Sonic diet. Strawberry, lime. [01:41:01] Speaker C: We're done. [01:41:01] Speaker B: That's a sign. [01:41:02] Speaker C: He's like, I gotta go get a [01:41:04] Speaker A: refill to wrap it up. [01:41:05] Speaker C: Oh, thank you gentlemen for having me. [01:41:07] Speaker B: That said, Brian, always pleasure to see you. [01:41:10] Speaker C: Dan. It was great to second. Yeah. Good. [01:41:12] Speaker A: Finally meet you in person and us. And I'm gonna hit the stop button now because Greg's not allowed to anymore. [01:41:18] Speaker B: I can't do it. I'm sorry. [01:41:20] Speaker A: I messed up.
