[00:00:06] Speaker A: Don't hit any other button.
[00:00:08] Speaker B: Don't touch anything.
[00:00:09] Speaker A: Don't touch it. Don't. I know you want to. You want to touch the button.
[00:00:13] Speaker B: It is not your friend.
[00:00:15] Speaker A: Don't touch the button.
[00:00:17] Speaker B: It will betray you. It'll build a data center in your backyard.
[00:00:22] Speaker C: Oh, no.
[00:00:24] Speaker B: All sorts of crazy things.
[00:00:26] Speaker A: Don't just ignore it.
[00:00:28] Speaker B: It's perfect right now. Travis, don't touch anything.
[00:00:30] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:00:30] Speaker A: Oh, it's perfect.
[00:00:31] Speaker B: Welcome to Funny Book Forensics, everyone. We're testing Travis's audio live on air.
[00:00:36] Speaker A: Live on air, just for you.
[00:00:38] Speaker B: It's now working.
[00:00:39] Speaker A: No fuzz, no buzz.
[00:00:41] Speaker B: Yep, it's good we got rid of the fuzz. Travis, they're not coming to get you anymore.
[00:00:45] Speaker C: It's the phone police.
[00:00:47] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:00:48] Speaker A: Do you say phone or foam?
[00:00:50] Speaker C: Phone police.
[00:00:51] Speaker A: Phone police. Phone police bad. Phone police good.
[00:00:56] Speaker B: Well, we had a shake up here in the Guest realm and we invited Travis back because he calls us at five o' clock on Tuesdays. Anyway.
[00:01:04] Speaker C: No, I call on Wednesdays because there's an alarm. This is the call, Greg. On Wednesdays
[00:01:10] Speaker A: you call on Tuesdays.
[00:01:11] Speaker B: Tuesdays.
[00:01:12] Speaker C: I can't tell what day of the week it is. I have a real job, Travis.
[00:01:17] Speaker A: You know what it is.
[00:01:17] Speaker B: I have a real job too, Dan.
[00:01:19] Speaker A: I can tell you what it is. Travis is pre toasting his phone calls.
[00:01:24] Speaker B: That's true.
[00:01:24] Speaker C: I'm not doing the bagel joke this week.
[00:01:26] Speaker A: No, but you do. No, it's funny because I actually texted Travis earlier today and said, I'm podcasting with Dan. I'll call you later. And then I was super surprised when I jumped into the chat. And there he is.
A wild Travis disappeared.
[00:01:43] Speaker B: You know, it's really cool. That has nothing to do with this.
[00:01:46] Speaker A: What's that?
[00:01:47] Speaker B: I'm currently using a €5 note as my bookmarker.
[00:01:51] Speaker A: Yes, marking your book.
[00:01:56] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:56] Speaker A: €5.
[00:01:57] Speaker B: No, €5.
It's very important.
[00:02:01] Speaker A: What is €5 convert to at this moment in time?
[00:02:05] Speaker B: I think they're pretty. They were pretty close for a while. I don't know.
[00:02:08] Speaker A: Is it worth less than that at the moment?
[00:02:11] Speaker B: I don't know. I mean, the President's been destroying the economy, like, who knows?
[00:02:14] Speaker A: So it's worth more.
[00:02:16] Speaker B: I don't know.
I don't know. Do you want me to look it up?
[00:02:20] Speaker A: Yeah, let's find out.
[00:02:21] Speaker B: Welcome to currencycast. We are looking at the currency equivalency ratings here on currencycast. Currencycast. Brought to you by.
Brought to you by. I can't say it. Travis. I almost said the name of the company you work for, which would not be appropriate.
[00:02:36] Speaker A: Can't do that. Don't unplug it. Why?
[00:02:38] Speaker B: Why did you unplug it?
[00:02:40] Speaker A: Why? Why would you do that?
What are you doing?
[00:02:44] Speaker B: Why is he leaving?
[00:02:45] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
[00:02:45] Speaker B: Where is Travis going?
[00:02:46] Speaker A: Oh, Travis is leaving everybody. It's because you started talking about currency and he's like, no, I don't think so.
[00:02:53] Speaker B: He threatened.
He's being over. Oh, the euro is worth $87 now.
[00:02:59] Speaker A: That's weird.
[00:03:00] Speaker B: I remember when the euro got you way. Wow. I guess going to Europe is a good idea right now. It's cheap.
You can go on vacation to Europe right now.
[00:03:10] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:03:12] Speaker B: Hey, and so I don't know what Travis is doing. He's plugging and unplugging things.
[00:03:18] Speaker A: Toasting and pre toasting.
[00:03:20] Speaker C: Okay. Can you hear me?
[00:03:21] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:03:21] Speaker B: Yes, we could hear you before.
[00:03:23] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:03:24] Speaker C: Is it working better now?
[00:03:26] Speaker A: Yes, it's working pretty good.
[00:03:28] Speaker B: Travis, did you know that the US dollar, the year Euro, is only worth 0.8. Oh, wait. The US dollar is worth 0.87 Euros. I had that backwards, Greg.
[00:03:37] Speaker A: Oh, okay, so. So the euro, that euro is worth more than the dollar.
[00:03:41] Speaker B: Hold up. The euro is worth a dollar. 15 cents. But back in the day, a euro was worth a dollar and fifty cents. So it has changed in the. Over the years.
[00:03:50] Speaker A: I see.
[00:03:51] Speaker B: Still, going to Europe, not a bad idea right now.
[00:03:53] Speaker A: I see.
[00:03:54] Speaker B: Yeah. Especially if all the world wars were fought in outer space. Going to Europe would be a good idea.
[00:04:00] Speaker C: It'd be a great idea.
[00:04:01] Speaker A: Then you could go and anywhere you wanted to in the world and not worry about it. Because space wars.
[00:04:10] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:11] Speaker A: Are we talking about saga?
[00:04:13] Speaker B: No, you just have like, Euro Disney and stuff.
[00:04:16] Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
[00:04:16] Speaker A: Euro Disney.
Where you spend your euros and get Disney bucks.
[00:04:22] Speaker B: Yeah. Or Disney bucks.
[00:04:25] Speaker A: Or Disney.
[00:04:27] Speaker B: No, Danhausen. Human dollars.
[00:04:29] Speaker A: Dan hasn't. Human dollars. Yes. I. I feel like I exchanged hours for human dollars today.
[00:04:35] Speaker B: And Travis was asking about Danhausen, actually.
[00:04:37] Speaker A: Oh, yeah? What were you asking earlier today about Danhausen?
[00:04:41] Speaker C: I can't find any video of him wrestling.
[00:04:43] Speaker B: That's because he's not good at wrestling. But he is good at entertaining.
[00:04:46] Speaker A: He's an entertainer.
[00:04:49] Speaker C: Good brain.
[00:04:51] Speaker B: He's really good at pointing at people and telling them they're cursed first.
[00:04:55] Speaker A: He makes a lot of human dollars that way.
[00:04:58] Speaker B: Yes.
And he.
He taught a New York nick to like, choke slam people or something.
That's good.
Yeah. Nobody watches Danhausen to see him wrestle. They watch him because he's going to be Svengoolie someday and he's awesome.
[00:05:19] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:05:20] Speaker B: And he makes clones.
But it's not just there. It's not just their crappy humor, though. Like, he. He has a whole. Like, he has a whole, like, laboratory.
[00:05:31] Speaker A: He's got a whole laboratory.
So he's like.
[00:05:36] Speaker C: He's.
[00:05:36] Speaker A: He's churning out mini Danhausen.
[00:05:40] Speaker B: They did screw up with the Joe Hendry song, though. That was terrible.
[00:05:43] Speaker A: Oh, no.
[00:05:44] Speaker B: Yeah, they had him and Joe Hendry sing a song together.
They need to keep them as far apart. Joe Hendry funny when he says songs that make fun of his opponents.
Danhausen funny when he, doing the lab, put Joe Hendry and Danhausen together, not just because the two funny guys should go together. Not good idea.
[00:06:03] Speaker C: That's.
[00:06:04] Speaker B: That's a bad idea. It's a poor idea. It's a poor strategy. It's kind of like.
[00:06:09] Speaker A: It's not SNL.
[00:06:11] Speaker B: No. Well, not like SNL from the. The 80s, admittedly. Like, I'm back on a position where.
Well, they also put that racist boxer in with the Danhausen skit, too, which I was super offended and haven't watched anything they've put out since then, so there you go.
[00:06:29] Speaker A: Yeah, like, why? Why?
[00:06:30] Speaker B: Yeah, like. Well, they can, because, you know, they own everything. They're corporations, and they could do whatever they want.
[00:06:39] Speaker A: Sure.
[00:06:39] Speaker B: And your alternative is to watch, like, five hours of people doing flips with no psychology?
[00:06:48] Speaker A: What is that?
[00:06:50] Speaker B: Oh, I don't want to insult it because they gave us tickets, and I know.
[00:06:53] Speaker A: I was gonna say I. Because I find that entertaining.
[00:06:58] Speaker B: Well, the live show is. The live show is entertaining. I don't know. I find.
[00:07:02] Speaker A: I find all of it entertaining.
[00:07:04] Speaker B: I don't. I mean, I find.
[00:07:05] Speaker A: I find. I. I find. I find the goofiness. It's goofy, and I like it.
[00:07:09] Speaker B: I. I think their live show was entertaining. No, their show isn't goofy. It's. It's. That's the problem. It's just guys doing that's. Or it's goofy in an awful way. Travis, what are you doing?
[00:07:20] Speaker C: I can't figure out how the reader works.
[00:07:22] Speaker A: Yeah, he's trying to read the reader, and he can't read the reader.
[00:07:25] Speaker C: You know, it keeps going into, like, panel by panel view, and it wasn't like that until I bumped it.
[00:07:31] Speaker A: Oh, no.
[00:07:31] Speaker C: And I don't want to read it panel by panel right now. I was trying to look at the whole pages, and it won't let me look at the whole pages.
[00:07:36] Speaker B: Oh, back down, back. Backspace.
[00:07:39] Speaker C: Let me try that.
[00:07:41] Speaker B: Clear.
[00:07:41] Speaker C: All you can see is dum, dum, googan. Over here.
[00:07:43] Speaker B: Is that. Is that an iPad or an iPad? Oh, I don't know.
[00:07:48] Speaker C: Like, look, there's no back look. See this page? It comes up fine, right? And then I turn it and it's like, oh, no, now you're going to read the whole page in little bitty specs.
The rest of the comic is going to be.
[00:08:00] Speaker B: Comics aren't meant to be read panel by panel.
[00:08:02] Speaker C: Right.
I mean, I don't mind it if I want to zoom in on a panel, if I want to click on it.
Right. But I want to see the whole page and I can't get to go back. And it was. It was working fine. It was fine. And then when you go, oh, wait,
[00:08:16] Speaker B: there are people that say.
There are people that say panel by panel view changes your life. And I would say, sure. It changes your life so that you don't see what the artist wanted on the page.
[00:08:30] Speaker C: Right. Because that's part of the narrative. It's true.
All right, we're good.
[00:08:35] Speaker B: But maybe it is life changing. Imagine what it would be like to read Dark Knight Returns panel by panel.
It would take all 16 pants. You. You would have like a 9,000.
[00:08:48] Speaker C: Are you still crying about that?
[00:08:49] Speaker A: Yeah, we should do that. We should do a whole podcast episode where you. We're just doing panel by panel mode for you, Dan. Let's do that.
[00:08:57] Speaker B: Is that when. Is that when we commit to do the 24 hour non stop funny book Forensics live where we cover the Dark Knight Returns panel?
[00:09:05] Speaker C: Panel.
[00:09:05] Speaker A: Honestly, I had a listener come into the shop and ask if we were going to actually do the whole thing cover to cover, because they wanted to get your full response, your full critique and criteria.
Criteria.
[00:09:23] Speaker B: I can give that summary right now in, like, one second.
[00:09:26] Speaker C: No, no, they wanted panel pages.
[00:09:28] Speaker A: They wanted you to go panel by panel.
[00:09:31] Speaker B: Panel by panel. Yeah, that would be. That would take hours.
[00:09:37] Speaker A: That's what they wanted.
[00:09:38] Speaker B: I have. I could do a. I could do a semester long college class doing that.
[00:09:43] Speaker A: But they wanted the whole thing, Dan. They wanted to listen to you explain how they made you feel, how you saw it, what you liked, what you didn't.
[00:09:53] Speaker B: Like, like, I've been trying. I've been working really hard to get, like, the tension out of my shoulders. And here, like. Like I did. I went to yoga for the first two times this week.
[00:10:03] Speaker A: How did it feel?
[00:10:05] Speaker B: Well, the really interesting part.
Well, one time they did a pose where they made me put my chest into my bicep. Like, they took my second biggest part and put it into my. You Know, fourth biggest part and try to like smash them together.
[00:10:19] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:10:20] Speaker B: And that hurt a lot.
[00:10:25] Speaker A: Did your shockers open?
[00:10:28] Speaker B: I don't know what a chakra is.
[00:10:32] Speaker A: You're not there yet.
[00:10:33] Speaker B: Yeah. Then I went to hot yoga.
[00:10:36] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. Did you sweat?
[00:10:38] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[00:10:39] Speaker A: Oh yeah. Did you shower afterwards?
[00:10:42] Speaker B: No, I went, I went. No, I, I did the good thing. I went and decided to get some stuff from winco. All sweat.
[00:10:48] Speaker A: Oh, that is not the good thing.
[00:10:51] Speaker C: That is. That is.
[00:10:52] Speaker B: I figured people would appreciate it if I went right to the grocery store sweaty.
[00:10:57] Speaker A: You know what you should do before you do hot yoga? The night carrots. You gotta eat like a garlicky meal and then do the hot yoga and expel all that.
[00:11:08] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't think that they would like that.
[00:11:10] Speaker A: No. That's how you do it though.
[00:11:12] Speaker B: It's bad enough that I can't bend. Like it's. It's crazy.
[00:11:16] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:11:17] Speaker B: I'm watching people like do all these moves and then the nice instructor would come over to me and say, oh, you're probably going to want to modify this one, Dan, and try this. Plus I have no knee. So we had to change all these things. They were very, very nice. That's cool. You know, I'll even give them a shout. Shout out. They were very nice the first few times. It's expand yoga on 6th in Tacoma. In Tacoma. So if you're in the Pacific Northwest and you want to try it out.
I don't know if they still have this. I can't commit to that. But when I signed up, they had a $20 for 20 days if you want to try it out.
[00:11:53] Speaker A: Are you doing 20 days?
[00:11:54] Speaker B: I. I'm trying. I mean, I'm trying not. I'm not doing it now because I'm here with you.
[00:11:59] Speaker A: Well, I know, I know you're here with us right now, but are you going tomorrow?
[00:12:03] Speaker B: No, because I have to.
I've go to game night tomorrow and then the next day I teach a class. So I won't go again until Friday or Saturday.
[00:12:12] Speaker A: Gotta commit, Dan.
[00:12:14] Speaker B: I mean, and of course this is on Sunday when we're recording on Tuesday.
[00:12:20] Speaker A: You gotta commit. You gotta commit to the yoga. If you don't, Travis, you just turn into yogurt.
[00:12:26] Speaker B: We'll get Travis back in a minute. He's still working with his reader, but yeah, it's been a. I'm just reading the comic.
[00:12:31] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, he hasn't read yet.
[00:12:33] Speaker B: Dan, that's important to you. Yeah, I know, because he was having. He was fighting with Marvel Unlimited and He's a crack service.
[00:12:41] Speaker C: He's like this thing.
[00:12:43] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
[00:12:45] Speaker B: Well, you know, if you just bought this omnibus that Amazon sent to me all dinged up.
Well, this is now a very valuable omnibus. Except this one isn't, because it's all banged up on the corner.
[00:12:57] Speaker A: That's all right, though. It's yours and you have it, and that's a good thing.
[00:13:03] Speaker B: Yeah, but when you spend money on an omnibus.
[00:13:05] Speaker A: That's true. You want it to come.
[00:13:07] Speaker B: You want them to come.
I mean, you don't want to dent them up until you get tired and drop it on your face when you're trying to.
[00:13:13] Speaker A: Oh, my God. I. I'm not gonna lie. Okay, so, like, I was. I was reading this in bed last night and on my computer, and I was half asleep, and I dropped the computer on my face two times.
It's not a light computer.
It's the Lenovo, the yoga. And it's supposed to be, you know, a nice.
[00:13:33] Speaker C: Whatever.
[00:13:33] Speaker A: I was reading it like, you know, flipped over and stuff. It's heavy as hell when you're sleepy and tired, and especially when it hits you in the face and it was a bad experience all around.
[00:13:46] Speaker B: Well, you ask what we're covering today. We're not covering saga.
[00:13:51] Speaker A: I know, I know.
[00:13:52] Speaker B: We'll get back to saga.
[00:13:53] Speaker A: But we are covering the Dark Knight Returns. Panel by panel.
[00:13:59] Speaker B: No listener.
[00:14:00] Speaker A: Kyle, it's your. No, no, we're not.
[00:14:02] Speaker B: Oh, no.
[00:14:03] Speaker A: Okay. I know. He was. He was excited.
[00:14:07] Speaker B: Is this.
[00:14:08] Speaker A: I. I do have to give him a shout out, though. Listen to Kyle. Thank you so much for stopping by the restaurant Porium and helping move boxes upon boxes of records. Last time you were in, Ann was overrun by records and she needed a hand, so he was nice enough to help out.
[00:14:25] Speaker B: That's the Retro Emporium on Meeker street in Kent, Washington. That is the one where you can relive your childhood.
[00:14:32] Speaker A: You can. I hear.
[00:14:33] Speaker B: And it smells like your childhood.
[00:14:35] Speaker A: It does.
[00:14:36] Speaker C: It does smell like breakfast cereal.
[00:14:38] Speaker A: Delicious.
[00:14:39] Speaker B: See?
Well, you know, while we're doing. We're doing all the plugs up front, too. Travis, where are you going to be on around September middle? You know, I think it's on a bad holiday. Actually, it is.
September 12th. Where are you going to be around September 12th?
[00:15:04] Speaker C: Vegas.
[00:15:06] Speaker B: Oh, I thought you were going to Portland.
[00:15:08] Speaker C: Oh, I'll be in Portland at my friend Jason's house and killing us.
[00:15:24] Speaker B: Really? Good job.
Is there an event, Travis, that. That prompted you to go to Portland?
[00:15:31] Speaker C: Oh, I think my friend Alex, Light beach has a Concert that night.
[00:15:37] Speaker A: That all these things are true, folks, is going well. Alex Lightspeed has a. Has a concert. Brian, who was a previous guest on Funny Book Forensics, is going to be hosting you while you're in Portland. You will be getting burgers while there.
But what are you going to be doing also while hanging out with Brett? Son of a bitch, Travis.
[00:16:02] Speaker B: What will Brett be doing?
[00:16:04] Speaker C: Complaining.
[00:16:06] Speaker A: This is all true. These are all statements of fact.
Brett. You will be hanging out with Brett. He will be complaining.
[00:16:16] Speaker C: Oh. Oh, I'm sorry. Yes.
[00:16:19] Speaker B: Sorry.
[00:16:20] Speaker A: Who else will be there with you? Who else will be there with you?
[00:16:27] Speaker C: Rose City.
[00:16:28] Speaker A: Oh, I was going to say.
[00:16:29] Speaker C: Is it.
[00:16:29] Speaker A: I was going to say, is there another.
[00:16:31] Speaker B: Oh, ro City ComicCon? Is that on September 11th, 12th and 13th?
[00:16:37] Speaker C: Probably.
[00:16:39] Speaker B: That would be a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Is that something.
[00:16:41] Speaker C: I completely have not planned this. Well.
[00:16:44] Speaker B: That's all right.
[00:16:45] Speaker A: That's okay.
[00:16:46] Speaker C: My main news.
[00:16:47] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:16:48] Speaker C: Is to eat food there.
[00:16:50] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:16:51] Speaker C: And then head north to Seattle.
[00:16:54] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:16:55] Speaker B: Well, good news. I understand you can still get the regular price tickets if you listen to this podcast the day it comes out. But the tickets are going up in price. So if you want to go to Rose City Comic Con, you might want to buy some tickets now.
You can go see drivers and Brian from last week.
[00:17:14] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:17:15] Speaker C: There'll be a bunch of people there.
[00:17:17] Speaker B: Actually.
[00:17:17] Speaker A: There's going to be so many people there.
[00:17:20] Speaker C: I think I. I was reading there's people there that I know.
[00:17:23] Speaker A: There are people there.
[00:17:25] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:17:26] Speaker B: Yeah. So it'll be really neat. You can go see. Yeah. So we were. We were trying to let the people know where they could see you and talk to you on here.
They can't talk to you if you
[00:17:38] Speaker C: use the YouTube version of this podcast. I'm right here.
[00:17:41] Speaker B: He's right here.
[00:17:42] Speaker A: Yes. If you watch the YouTube version, which we suggest you do, watch it, leave a comment like and subscribe.
[00:17:48] Speaker C: It's so much more exciting with me here in person in the video comments. Scottish shirt thing that I bought in Scotland once.
[00:17:57] Speaker A: Yeah. You look very suave, sir. But, Rico.
[00:18:02] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:18:02] Speaker A: If they go and see you at Rose City Comic Con, they can. They can see you, meet you in person.
[00:18:08] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:18:08] Speaker A: Talk to you, be in your presence, soak in your essence, and then maybe become your friend.
[00:18:19] Speaker B: I'll tell you what, when you do hot yoga, you really soak in your essence.
[00:18:23] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:18:23] Speaker A: I bet you do.
[00:18:24] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:18:25] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:18:26] Speaker C: So we're doing this comic called what if Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commandos had World War II in outer space.
[00:18:33] Speaker B: That's true.
[00:18:34] Speaker A: That. Yes.
[00:18:35] Speaker B: And it's from what if number 14 from 1979.
[00:18:44] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:18:44] Speaker B: And Travis is very excited when he discovered that we were not covering the new what ifs, but we were covering the old what ifs.
[00:18:51] Speaker C: I am excited to see the older ones.
So then I read this, and I gotta admit, this one's rough.
[00:18:58] Speaker B: I. I don't know.
[00:18:59] Speaker A: Dan Raymond, he made me, like, flip a coin last night in the middle of the night while he was like, choose a comic. And I was like, we're covering. We're covering a book like that Later.
Just do this one. I didn't realize what it was, and then I started reading and I was like, damn it.
I mean, it's a.
[00:19:16] Speaker C: It's a.
[00:19:17] Speaker A: It's an interesting story.
[00:19:19] Speaker B: You know, it.
This is interesting. We may all disagree on this one.
So I. I actually.
[00:19:28] Speaker A: And loved it.
[00:19:30] Speaker B: I. I kind of liked it, actually, except for there was one obviously major thing I didn't like, but I kind of like a lot of it, actually.
[00:19:39] Speaker C: Do you watch a lot of old television?
[00:19:42] Speaker B: Not anymore.
[00:19:44] Speaker A: Okay. But you did, and we can tell, I think. What kind of household did you grow up in, Dan?
[00:19:49] Speaker C: This feels like.
This feels like late 70s television writing.
[00:19:55] Speaker B: It does feel like late 70s.
[00:19:57] Speaker C: The lines, the. The language, the. The character tropes.
[00:20:03] Speaker A: Definitely does feel like.
Like, I honestly, I'm not gonna lie. It feels like we covered an issue of GI Joe, and it felt like an early issue. GI Joe to me.
[00:20:19] Speaker B: Yeah, well, the early issues, not the. Would have come out after this.
[00:20:24] Speaker A: No, I know. So it was following in line of. But. But in space.
Very bad start. Galactica theory,
[00:20:33] Speaker B: just to set the ground. I. Travis, I intentionally did not look up a bunch of things about this, so you would not complain about me talking about history.
[00:20:41] Speaker C: Well, thanks, historian.
[00:20:43] Speaker B: The only. The only history part I was going to bring up is when. Sorry, when Nick Fury first appeared to give folks a reason why this issue exists. Okay, so they did a Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commando series in 1963, and that is the. When it came out. That was Nick Fury's first appearance.
That was Nick Fury and other soldiers, like the ones you'll see in this book, fighting in World War II. So that's where you get the basis for this.
And then, of course, Nick Fury evolves right. Into several different things, but he evolves later on into Nick Fury, agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
which is the book most people know about for him. Right. And that was in the late 60s. So he goes from a World War II soldier to a spy. Is that a fair statement?
[00:21:35] Speaker C: Is that The Ditko era with.
And it gets all spy crafty.
[00:21:41] Speaker B: I think Ditko was gone.
This says Sterinko drew it.
[00:21:46] Speaker C: Actually, it was Drenko. I'm not good at these things.
[00:21:50] Speaker B: But it was trying to put an effort into it.
[00:21:52] Speaker C: Look, he's got two eyeballs. I caught that part.
[00:21:57] Speaker B: That was the time that. That was around the time that Denny o' Neill tried to re. Get Wonder Woman popular by making her into a super spy as well.
[00:22:08] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:22:09] Speaker B: A little bit later. And then Gloria Steinem wrote a whole, like, article about how Wonder Woman should be Wonder Woman and not a spy and not a. Not a human spy.
So, yeah, it. It seems. It makes sense. And wasn't the Avengers the spy show was on TV then. Right? You had.
[00:22:28] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:22:29] Speaker B: James Bond was obviously popular.
[00:22:31] Speaker C: Get smart.
[00:22:32] Speaker B: So it makes sense to make everybody get smart.
[00:22:35] Speaker A: Oh, so good.
[00:22:38] Speaker B: It made sense to turn everybody into a spy. And then from uncle. And.
And then. And since you all. You two are the Marvel folk, make sure I get. Get this right. And then Nick Fury becomes sort of like a. He's a spy, but then he's head of S.H.I.E.L.D.
and we read this in the Iron man books. I remember that. But help me make sure I get it right. Like, Nick Fury sort of becomes like the representative of sort of government corruption after the Nixon administration in Marvel.
Like, he becomes not a bad guy, but he kind of becomes like, you know, I'm in charge of things. I'm the super spy. I control everything kind of guy in Marvel. And that's how he's portrayed in those Marvel movies too. Right.
[00:23:23] Speaker A: It's interconnected.
[00:23:26] Speaker B: He knows things. He does things.
[00:23:30] Speaker C: I struggle with this. This era you're talking about, sir. Let's get to the comics so I don't embarrass myself more and say something weird like, hey, the watcher's outfits looks different in this one than I remember him looking before.
[00:23:42] Speaker B: The Watcher sometimes looks really buff in these issues too.
[00:23:45] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:23:45] Speaker C: Yeah. Well, you know what was a good what if?
[00:23:48] Speaker A: What?
[00:23:49] Speaker C: The one what if. If Spider man didn't marry Mary. Janie married.
[00:23:55] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:23:56] Speaker C: That was a good one.
[00:23:57] Speaker A: You know what's funny is that was one of the other choices. And then Dan said, like, nah, we don't want.
[00:24:01] Speaker B: That was not one of the other.
[00:24:02] Speaker C: I own that one.
[00:24:03] Speaker B: That's not.
[00:24:04] Speaker A: It wasn't. It wasn't. It wasn't the. It wasn't one of the choices.
[00:24:07] Speaker B: It was not one of the choices.
We only have, like, the first 20 of the original series here.
[00:24:14] Speaker A: I was gonna Say, though I.
[00:24:16] Speaker C: The.
[00:24:17] Speaker A: I think one of the better. The better representations of Nick Fury was when we had in the 90s.
[00:24:27] Speaker C: Don't do it. Don't.
Don't. Everyone who listens podcast knows where you're going with this.
[00:24:33] Speaker B: Just don't. Don't know. Oh, but I like that. It took me one millisecond for less than Travis. You know, more than Travis. But no, my parents let me rent
[00:24:42] Speaker A: it whenever I wanted.
[00:24:45] Speaker C: I can't believe the thing got a release.
[00:24:49] Speaker B: It was an abomination.
You know, it had been good. If the abomination showed up in it and, like, ripped arms off, that would be pretty cool.
[00:25:00] Speaker C: All right, so I'm on this first page.
[00:25:02] Speaker B: Yeah, first page. Travis. Like, let's do this.
We didn't even talk about the COVID
[00:25:07] Speaker A: The COVID is amazing.
[00:25:09] Speaker C: The COVID is pretty cool.
[00:25:11] Speaker B: I love the COVID I just.
[00:25:12] Speaker C: I'm just gonna point something out here at this point right now. On this cover right now, Dum Dum wearing a bowler cap inside his head, under his helmet. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:25:22] Speaker A: How do you do that?
[00:25:24] Speaker C: That's a setup for later. That is a setup.
[00:25:26] Speaker B: Get brought up.
[00:25:27] Speaker C: Huh? Weird.
[00:25:29] Speaker A: Yeah. Interesting.
[00:25:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
And so we have a different plot
[00:25:33] Speaker C: person than a script writer. That's good.
[00:25:35] Speaker B: Oh, you've got. Also, you've got all sorts of stuff going on in these early whiffs.
[00:25:40] Speaker C: So you've got panels. Panel guy.
[00:25:42] Speaker B: Yeah. You've got Friedrich plotting. You've got Don Glute scripting. You've got Jim Shooter. Or, I mean, not Jim Shooter. Sorry. You got Roy Thomas taking credit for the whole concept of the what if? Which he did come up with, but he started pushing it off. These books were only released once every other month, so they're bigger books. You've got Jim Shooter is the consulting editor as he ascends to the editorship at Marvel. Right. And then we've got, say, Tom's last name or is doing the letters. We like him. Right?
[00:26:16] Speaker C: Yep. Yeah.
[00:26:17] Speaker B: Did he do letters for another book?
Yeah, Spawn recently.
[00:26:22] Speaker C: Star Wars.
Oh, yeah, Spawn.
He always does Spawn.
[00:26:28] Speaker A: He always does Spawn.
[00:26:30] Speaker B: Those were. Not, again, none of the ones I was thinking you would say, but, you know, that's. That's fine.
[00:26:35] Speaker C: Oh.
[00:26:36] Speaker A: Oh.
Oh, my gosh. Travis. I think he's talking about that other S1.
[00:26:41] Speaker C: Yeah. He did the Chris Claremont run for X Men.
[00:26:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:45] Speaker A: All right, so no. Was it the Star?
[00:26:48] Speaker C: And.
[00:26:48] Speaker B: And it will continue like Travis was doing a minute ago when things got off the rails. I'll pull us back here in doctor on Colors, which is why the colors pop so much now? I don't know how the colors I imagine, Mike, my colors here probably look similar because it would have been shiny. I don't know how my colors would have looked on newsprint.
[00:27:05] Speaker C: They would have looked like hell. Omnibus look like crap on old media print.
[00:27:09] Speaker B: Yeah. But this one, the COVID would have looked good because it was on shiny.
[00:27:13] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah.
[00:27:14] Speaker B: Semi serene. Yeah.
[00:27:15] Speaker A: I think the lettering would be the same in both books.
[00:27:19] Speaker C: I'm just happy to see the Bolds.
[00:27:21] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:27:21] Speaker B: Well, we get Stan Lee presents a stunning saga of an alternate reality. What if Sergeant presents Commandos.
I can't even get through the title.
Oh, sorry, Dan.
[00:27:34] Speaker C: Wow, you really want to review Saga?
[00:27:38] Speaker B: Yeah. He wants us to close this and open Saga right now. No, he. I ask him. I ask him, do you want to do Saga? I said, yeah, or do you want to do what if? And he said, I said, yeah, let's do Saga.
[00:27:48] Speaker A: And he said, let's do a what if.
[00:27:50] Speaker B: That is not how that happened.
[00:27:52] Speaker C: I'm just glad we're not doing Kingdom Come.
[00:27:55] Speaker A: Oh, I thought that's what we were going to do. As soon as I saw you, I was about to close this book and open that.
[00:28:00] Speaker C: No, I was super happy. I was like, yeah, to read that next chapter. But then I spent three hours trying to find this damn issue, and you
[00:28:07] Speaker B: could just read the next chapter, which you already had, and you would have been so happy.
So what? We get the. Okay, so let me try this again. What if Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commandos had fought World War II in outer space?
And then we get the Watcher. Who is this watcher is looking ripped again.
[00:28:28] Speaker C: He's.
[00:28:28] Speaker A: You know, he's been. He's been doing that Tony little workout. He's got the.
[00:28:32] Speaker C: The.
[00:28:33] Speaker A: The Gazelle.
Because that's working out your upper ankle.
[00:28:40] Speaker C: No, no.
[00:28:43] Speaker A: Oh, oh, he's doing the other one. That's just your knees. You're just spinning your knees back and forth.
[00:28:51] Speaker B: I am the Watcher, and I welcome you to Space Station Pearl, the Earth's major defense, on this infamous day, December 7, 1941. And did something happen on that day?
[00:29:03] Speaker C: There was a rave called Cosmic Kazi or. It was the most racist rave I ever went to.
[00:29:12] Speaker A: It's. It's always awkward when my. My cousin Phil messages, text me Torah Tora. Tora. And I don't know how to respond.
[00:29:22] Speaker B: Is it. Was your rave any more racist than this comic book?
[00:29:28] Speaker C: I'm.
[00:29:28] Speaker A: I'm.
[00:29:29] Speaker C: It was not my rave. I would never be stupid enough to throw a rave called Kazi on December 7 and then book all Korean headliners.
But it's.
[00:29:43] Speaker A: It's like a double. It's a double.
[00:29:45] Speaker C: Yeah. It was bad. It was bad. And no one showed up. They're like, why isn't anyone coming? I'm like, this is a terrible idea. It's a terrible idea.
[00:29:53] Speaker B: It's like. It's like having this really happen is this. This is a real.
[00:29:56] Speaker C: This is a real thing.
[00:29:57] Speaker B: Wow. I thought you were. Yeah. Wow.
[00:30:00] Speaker A: It's almost like having a comic con on 9. 11.
[00:30:02] Speaker C: I.
[00:30:09] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:30:09] Speaker C: So anyways, are we gonna read.
[00:30:12] Speaker B: Greg's gonna. We don't have to read all the lines.
[00:30:14] Speaker C: I'm saying. Did you change the format? Because if you change the format, I want to be dumb. Dumb.
I can do Irish. I'm not racist towards Irish people.
[00:30:24] Speaker B: Well, we don't really do accents, I guess, because I'm not.
[00:30:28] Speaker A: But if you want to read. Travis, please.
You're wearing the shirt.
[00:30:33] Speaker C: Yeah, this is Scottish.
[00:30:36] Speaker A: I'm sorry.
[00:30:36] Speaker C: I.
[00:30:37] Speaker A: That was.
[00:30:38] Speaker B: Hey, well, these guys, these soldiers are all on station Pearl. Get it?
[00:30:43] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:30:44] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:30:45] Speaker B: Pearl Harbor. They're at.
[00:30:46] Speaker A: Well, they're in space. They're in a space harbor.
[00:30:49] Speaker C: Yeah, I was just saying it looks like a space harbor to me.
Also, like, if your ships are parked like that, how do you.
How do you exit and get on. Never mind.
[00:30:58] Speaker B: They're spaceships, Travis. Nick Fury is playing cards with his friend Hargrove. Yeah.
[00:31:05] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:31:06] Speaker B: Wait, and there's, like, a space pirate.
No, these guys are soldiers.
And there's.
[00:31:16] Speaker A: Oh, that's.
[00:31:17] Speaker B: There's the Alphas and the Betas.
[00:31:21] Speaker C: Oh, my God. You guys. You know, I just realized.
[00:31:23] Speaker A: What's that?
[00:31:25] Speaker C: This is the plot to the movie Pearl Harbor.
[00:31:28] Speaker A: Donna, Pearl harbor sucks.
[00:31:31] Speaker B: I heard a whole song about that.
[00:31:32] Speaker C: No, no, like, hear it. Seriously, like, so that movie is terrible. Is it? It's not fun as it is. I don't think it's terrible.
[00:31:39] Speaker B: It's just not great.
[00:31:41] Speaker C: Anyways, it's, like, based on the story of two actual guys that had a story about what happened. So I have a feeling these guys were like, hey, you know, I read this thing about what happened at Pearl harbor, and so they were out partying the night before and playing cards, and the two guys raced down there, and they got a hell of a gun. And then they got in the airplanes. They fought for a little bit, but then they, like, joined the team. That was the first Strike Team. And I'm like, oh, yeah, I saw this movie.
[00:32:08] Speaker B: Oh, Travis just hit, like, the first five pages. Here. Sounds good.
[00:32:11] Speaker C: Because it's the plot to Pearl Harbor.
[00:32:14] Speaker B: Oh, I. I've never watched Pearl Harbor.
[00:32:16] Speaker C: So bad.
[00:32:17] Speaker B: Don't know.
[00:32:17] Speaker C: It's just not great. It's just not bad either.
[00:32:19] Speaker B: I don't have time for not bad, but not great war movies because I don't like war movies.
[00:32:23] Speaker C: So I broke my reader again, which is weird.
[00:32:27] Speaker A: I mean, like my grandpa who was there was like when we watched the movie. Well, he wanted to watch the movie Everest. And then he was like, it wasn't like this. This is a bunch of shit.
[00:32:35] Speaker B: So that is perfect.
Well, they do run down to fight from playing cards. And I think the first sort of offensive thing in the book is on the COVID All of the lizard people are red.
And in the book they are not red.
[00:33:01] Speaker A: Color, are they, Dan?
[00:33:05] Speaker B: They're not red.
[00:33:07] Speaker A: They're not red.
[00:33:09] Speaker B: They're a color more closely designed to make you think that they might have been from the opposition at Pearl Harbor.
[00:33:19] Speaker A: I see.
[00:33:22] Speaker B: Which is tan problematic.
I mean, I've gotta point that out.
[00:33:28] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:33:29] Speaker B: I didn't hate the book as much as you guys did, but I did think that was a little bit problematic.
[00:33:34] Speaker C: I didn't hate this book. I want to point that out.
[00:33:37] Speaker A: I didn't.
[00:33:38] Speaker C: I just can't get it to work on my reader. It's stuck again.
[00:33:42] Speaker A: I.
[00:33:45] Speaker B: But Travis is correct.
We've got this guy, Hawthorne, right. What is his name?
Hargrove. Sorry. Hargrove and Nick Fury. And they rush into battle, they grab like an anti aircraft gun, except it's an anti spacecraft gun.
They start shooting things.
And then we meet this guy.
We meet. Is it Captain Sam?
[00:34:13] Speaker A: Yeah, Sergeant Sam, red shirt.
[00:34:16] Speaker B: No, no, it's Sergeant Fury. This is like Captain Sam, isn't it?
[00:34:19] Speaker A: Is it Captain Sam?
[00:34:20] Speaker B: It's Captain Sam. Yes. Captain Captain's ranked above.
[00:34:23] Speaker C: It doesn't. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter.
[00:34:25] Speaker A: He smoked a pipe inside his bubble. That's the. That. That's weird, man. You can't smoke a pipe inside a bubble.
[00:34:33] Speaker C: I can't get my. I can't get this thing to work again.
[00:34:36] Speaker B: Well, we got you. We got Captain Sam and Captain Sam, like Captain Sam saves them after their thing gets shot and he tells them what they're going to do next. And then Captain Sam gets shot. It is also amazing that Captain Sam is smoking a pipe inside of the space bubble.
[00:34:57] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:34:58] Speaker B: Nick Fury is smoking a cigar inside the space bubble and then Captain Sam gets shot. So I thought Captain Sam must have been like one of the original characters in The Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos, right?
[00:35:14] Speaker C: No, he dies. He's a red shirt.
[00:35:17] Speaker B: Yeah. This is his, like, only appearance.
[00:35:20] Speaker A: Yep, that's it.
[00:35:22] Speaker B: And this is the. He wasn't related to the other comic at all. He was not related to feature comics.
[00:35:28] Speaker C: He's just. Well, I mean. Okay, just, just.
I don't know if it matters because he's an NPC. They're in World War II, which is the 40s, and they have a giant space station. They're about to go to war with aliens in a giant space station. These guys barely have freaking combustion engines and they're in space. I'm just saying.
[00:35:45] Speaker B: Oh, no, no. It explains that. Are you ready? There's the next page. So the Watcher lets us know that the bait and attack on Station Pearl is Earth's entry into the war is official. See?
So it's outer space. And then the Watcher explains to us all that Leonardo da Vinci's. All of his paintings and all of his. Not his paintings, sorry. All of his little designs were actually made into real things.
[00:36:12] Speaker A: Oh, my.
[00:36:13] Speaker B: Advanced human technology so much that when the explorers were flying around on ships or were using ships in the 1500s, we had flying machines that when we had. Like in 1800s, when Napoleon marched and watched the sun rise, it says, instead, we were on Earth, rising, observing over the moon. So it just drives everything sped up. So technology.
Much better.
[00:36:43] Speaker A: Dan. That means that the Da Vinci Code is real and Tom Hanks has to solve the puzzle. Because if he doesn't, then we're all goners.
[00:36:55] Speaker B: You know, the interesting thing is we were talking about. If we were talking about bad movie writing.
You nailed it.
[00:37:06] Speaker A: Is that that movie and its sequel? Definitely not good. The book is fantastic.
[00:37:10] Speaker B: Book, fantastic movie, Terrible.
[00:37:13] Speaker C: No.
[00:37:14] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
And.
[00:37:15] Speaker B: And how do you do that? The book. The book is paced like it's a movie, which is how it kept me interested.
[00:37:20] Speaker A: You just, Just, Just make it the same way.
Well, anyways.
[00:37:28] Speaker B: Well, in his dying wish, Sam wants the.
[00:37:33] Speaker C: The.
[00:37:34] Speaker B: Doesn't he want the. These guys to move on? He wants a new Howling come out and he wants Nick Fury to lead them. So Nick Fury gets everybody together or something?
Yeah, he gets everybody together and they're fighting a robot. Baiting guys.
Baitin.
[00:37:49] Speaker C: They're baiting robots have paralyzing gas.
Oh, no.
[00:37:55] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, these robots, we're not paralyzing gas yet.
[00:37:59] Speaker C: We're just two.
[00:38:00] Speaker B: The big robots. And this is where we meet the crew. So we meet dumb Dung Dugan with the bowler hat.
We meet Gabriel Jones, who Because, like, Gabriel, he has a trumpet.
[00:38:11] Speaker A: Oh, wait, what I. I've heard, I read. I think there's this thing that's, like, based on angels and demons and stuff like that that I. That I heard about that's like, don't
[00:38:22] Speaker C: forget my movie right now.
[00:38:23] Speaker A: Okay, Sorry.
[00:38:24] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, it is interesting that both guys.
[00:38:27] Speaker C: A little confused what's going on on this. On this part almost.
[00:38:33] Speaker B: What?
[00:38:33] Speaker C: I don't know what. You're on battling and. Is that Gabriel with a mustache? I'm really confused.
[00:38:40] Speaker A: He's reading a different book.
[00:38:42] Speaker B: You're on a completely different comic book.
[00:38:43] Speaker A: This guy is. He's. That's. Robots battling in a different book. Travis.
[00:38:48] Speaker C: Is that what it's supposed to be? You said robots battling you.
[00:38:51] Speaker A: Damn, Weeb.
[00:38:53] Speaker B: We'll get. We'll get there. We'll get there.
[00:38:56] Speaker C: I get it. I.
[00:38:57] Speaker B: Okay. We'll get there. I. We'll get there.
[00:39:00] Speaker A: He's reading them manga over there. This. I mean, I try to open up
[00:39:04] Speaker C: this freaking comic again, but. Stuck.
[00:39:07] Speaker A: It's stuck. He flips it.
[00:39:09] Speaker C: He.
[00:39:10] Speaker A: He opens it up and it's nothing.
[00:39:11] Speaker C: No, it's just. Just. It keeps getting stuck in this panel to panel mode. It's driving me nuts.
[00:39:15] Speaker B: I can't keep up.
[00:39:16] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:39:17] Speaker C: And when I reset it, it opened up a different book just now.
[00:39:19] Speaker B: And I was like, hey, I've got all these people to introduce. There's so many. There's Dum Dum Dugan. There's Gabriel Jones, who has a trumpet, and he uses it. Lasers, trumpet. Laser sharks.
[00:39:31] Speaker A: Imagine if you had a trumpet that was a laser, and you're just, like, blowing it and just, like, blasting people with a trumpet. Laser. Laser.
[00:39:37] Speaker B: Trumpet. We've got Izzy Cohen, a master mechanic who can repair or sabotage anything.
[00:39:43] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, like robots, we get.
[00:39:46] Speaker B: Yeah.
Maybe he can fix, like, cyborg robots.
[00:39:51] Speaker A: Oh, my God. What if he fixed a cyborg robot that was broken but not broken, Just needed a little tender loving care?
[00:40:00] Speaker B: We meet Dino Minnelli, former star of Taron holo shows. And Jonathan Jr Juniper, an ambitious college graduate. You know, I'm gonna say, like, I mean, I know everybody joined the military during World War II, right? Not everybody, but a lot of people. Yeah, but I've never thought of ambitious college graduate and joining the military as to, like, standard trope.
[00:40:25] Speaker A: It's a different time, Dan. Like, they put a spin on it where you wanted to do it because it was your.
Your calling, your duty, your.
[00:40:35] Speaker C: Your.
[00:40:35] Speaker B: Oh, no, I get that in World War II. It's just interesting to see the words ambitious college graduate. And then I became a front in the military.
[00:40:43] Speaker A: Yeah, well, I mean, yeah, I would
[00:40:45] Speaker B: expect him to be like. And go into officer school or something or you know, you gotta work your
[00:40:49] Speaker A: way up from potato peeler to something different.
[00:40:52] Speaker B: And we meet Robert Rebel Ralston, a former Kentucky jockey. And then we're pretty much.
We're gonna hear about like three of these guys. The rest of the show are there. We're gonna hear about Hargrove, Fury, Gabriel, and that's pretty much it, right? As far as who's featured. Yeah, I think. Oh, and Bowler Hat Dude. Dumb dumb Dugan.
[00:41:18] Speaker A: Dumb dumb Dude. Dumb.
[00:41:20] Speaker C: Can't tell because we can't give this thing to work again.
[00:41:22] Speaker B: Yeah, you to the hat. Give me a second.
[00:41:25] Speaker A: Dumb dumb or dumb dumb?
[00:41:26] Speaker B: No, we're not. We're not to the hat yet. We're to the. We're to the freeze gas.
[00:41:31] Speaker C: Just smoke a cigars in your. In your oxygen bubble. That's. Yeah, that's safe. We're.
[00:41:36] Speaker B: We're into the freeze gas. So Nick Fury goes in like, shut up everybody. We got to go meet our new captain. And they find out their new captain is a robot.
[00:41:47] Speaker A: A nuts.
[00:41:49] Speaker B: He kind of looks like the original computo from the 60s Pewto.
But it's a classic old school. Or he looks like a. He could. He kind of looks like a cross between Computo and Robbie Relic.
[00:42:05] Speaker C: Love of God.
[00:42:06] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:42:07] Speaker A: Dan, is your computer still named Computo?
[00:42:09] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, my hard drives are named Computer.
[00:42:13] Speaker C: No, my hard drives named something too.
[00:42:17] Speaker A: Secret file?
[00:42:19] Speaker C: No.
[00:42:19] Speaker B: Micro drive.
[00:42:20] Speaker C: Windows drive.
[00:42:22] Speaker A: Oh,
[00:42:25] Speaker B: so
[00:42:27] Speaker C: think of the comics going backwards now.
[00:42:29] Speaker A: Yeah, you're going backwards.
[00:42:31] Speaker B: You're going back in time. Well, I'm to the part where they get all freeze gassed because they try to talk crap to the robot. And then he like basically takes them all out. Yeah, prints them out.
He prints them out. A message. He says, I will be with you at all times to ensure you're compliant with orders. So he sends like a little robot to go from the big robot. The big robot's planning everything. And they've got this. That's the end of part two. So they're going off. Dan, we'll pay the bait. INS in space. Oh, at Midway Station. At Midway Station.
[00:43:03] Speaker C: Can you give me a page number?
[00:43:05] Speaker B: Oh, no, because my. I don't. I have.
I have paid. I do have page numbers. I'm on page 490 of the omnibus.
[00:43:12] Speaker C: Yeah, well, I'm on page 11 and you skipped my. My moment.
[00:43:16] Speaker B: Oh, sorry. Skip the bowler hat.
[00:43:18] Speaker C: Yeah, the bowler hat, part two, page 11.
[00:43:21] Speaker B: Okay, so, like, second page.
Yeah, yeah.
[00:43:25] Speaker C: I just want to say. No, he doesn't say that. He says, my fedora.
[00:43:29] Speaker B: Oh, his fedora.
So is that your contention? Is that. Yes, comics over.
Because that's a bowler hat and not a fedora.
[00:43:38] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:43:39] Speaker A: Sorry, my lady.
[00:43:41] Speaker B: Yeah. And apparently it's a bad idea to wear hats underneath a dome and smoke cigars. Apparently.
[00:43:47] Speaker A: Yeah. All bad things.
[00:43:48] Speaker C: Like, where's the ash go? Like, if you got to flick the ash on your cigar and you're in a high oxygen helmet.
[00:43:54] Speaker A: I was just gonna say. Yeah. All that oxygen. What's the oxygen level in there?
[00:43:58] Speaker B: It's like, now.
[00:44:00] Speaker A: Fireball waiting to happen.
[00:44:01] Speaker B: I'm getting to the start of part three here. Do you think maybe that one alien was miscolored? That one?
[00:44:07] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:44:08] Speaker B: Everybody else is like, the. Is red now.
[00:44:10] Speaker A: Dan. Dan, do you think all the aliens are the same color?
[00:44:14] Speaker C: Okay, look, if we're gonna do social commentary, I'm gonna do say this right now.
[00:44:18] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:44:18] Speaker C: It's strange to me that at some point, we decided that we couldn't make Nazis bad guys because we might offend someone.
[00:44:28] Speaker B: Oh, just wait, Travis.
[00:44:30] Speaker C: It just weirds me out because, like, I wonder sometimes if that's something that allowed that thought process to grow in society.
Because so many movies and so many books where they're obviously Nazis. They won't say they're Nazis. And in this one, they're literally fighting in World War II, and they're, like, not the Nazis.
[00:44:53] Speaker B: Well, that's because this one's traveling. The Pacific theater started with.
[00:44:57] Speaker A: Yeah, they're supposed to be, like, Japanese.
[00:44:59] Speaker B: It started with harbor, and then it's going to Midway Island.
[00:45:02] Speaker C: Well, I fixed it.
[00:45:04] Speaker B: I mean, Midway Space Station.
[00:45:06] Speaker C: Okay, we're good.
Yeah.
[00:45:08] Speaker B: The watcher's explaining all this. I mean, the watcher's letting us know
[00:45:11] Speaker C: it's not gonna pay attention to that guy. Dude.
[00:45:14] Speaker A: I mean, and he is literally the storyteller.
[00:45:17] Speaker B: I mean, he's the narrator in pop culture.
[00:45:19] Speaker A: I mean, like, Indiana Jones made no bones about calling Nazi bad guys.
[00:45:25] Speaker B: I make no bound bones about calling Batman and his Nazi brown shirts bad guys.
[00:45:30] Speaker A: You didn't do it when we.
[00:45:31] Speaker C: You literally.
[00:45:32] Speaker B: I did do it.
[00:45:33] Speaker C: I know I did about this last week.
[00:45:35] Speaker A: You did not.
[00:45:37] Speaker C: Yeah, I. I heard it. I heard it. You talked about the brown coats, the whole gosh darn podcast. Yeah, he did. It was like. It was Miller. Yeah, it's just a freak. Freak.
[00:45:48] Speaker A: He's doing it again.
[00:45:48] Speaker C: It's Another, like, you gotta. You gotta lay off that guy, man, just a little bit, because he's gonna die soon.
[00:45:55] Speaker B: Okay?
[00:45:56] Speaker C: That's it. That's all I got. We're all.
[00:45:58] Speaker B: We're all gonna die soon.
[00:45:59] Speaker A: He's been living in a sin city. That's okay.
[00:46:03] Speaker B: Maybe he should live in Sin City. He'd have more fun.
[00:46:06] Speaker C: Kind of did. He lived in New York in the 80s.
[00:46:09] Speaker B: Yeah. It wasn't Sin City. Also, like, what. Yes. I get he had trauma from living in a dangerous city, but everybody in
[00:46:15] Speaker C: that dangerous city did. Yeah, I got it.
[00:46:18] Speaker B: Yeah.
I think future people in New York maybe had more trauma, too, but that's a whole different discussion. Yeah, so that's a discussion you would have at Rose City Comic Con.
[00:46:30] Speaker C: Hey, no, I don't do that. I don't do panels.
[00:46:36] Speaker B: You should. You're above. You've transcended panels.
[00:46:40] Speaker C: I don't know if I've transited panels. I just always just get up there and go, okay, well, we're here, and
[00:46:48] Speaker B: we are on a. Say.
[00:46:49] Speaker A: We've got the Watcher watching.
[00:46:54] Speaker B: We've got an entire aircraft carrier.
[00:46:58] Speaker C: Dual aircraft carrier.
[00:47:00] Speaker B: Oh, we got a dual air. We got aircraft carrier. We've got.
Because we've got.
[00:47:05] Speaker C: Is it.
[00:47:06] Speaker A: Is an aircraft carrier or spacecraft carrier?
[00:47:08] Speaker B: Spacecraft carrier.
[00:47:10] Speaker A: Oh, and how many spacecrafts do you think are carried on a spacecraft carrier that is dual.
[00:47:15] Speaker B: Let's do the math.
[00:47:17] Speaker C: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Apparently, they keep them all on top of the Runway.
[00:47:26] Speaker B: Now, I know they're paralleling Travis. I know they're trying to parallel World War II here and have an aircraft carrier, but as a fan of a certain show, do you think it's more appropriate to have a battleship in space or an aircraft carrier in space?
[00:47:41] Speaker C: Oh, Okay, I'm done.
[00:47:55] Speaker B: Thank you. That's all I needed.
Now, what if we had a crossover between this.
Oh, no, I don't want that.
[00:48:06] Speaker A: Oh, you don't want that? Why not?
[00:48:08] Speaker C: No, you must notice I look like a freaking giant, like, pillow bag chair. Pillow chair.
[00:48:16] Speaker A: You look like a pillow chair.
[00:48:18] Speaker C: Or you look like a bean chair? Beanbag chair.
[00:48:21] Speaker A: Are you a bean bag chair, Travis?
[00:48:23] Speaker C: I look like a bean bag chair? If you're watching this on YouTube, comment below if I look like a beanbag chair. Because I feel like I look like a beanbag chair.
[00:48:29] Speaker A: I don't think you look like a beanbag chair.
[00:48:32] Speaker B: Well, we find out that Red Hargrove in your chair. Red Hargrove. Because he has red hair.
He has an orange hair. He goes off to Fly spaceships.
Fly fighter ships.
[00:48:44] Speaker C: You heard the man. Space.
[00:48:47] Speaker B: Yeah. The men of Torpedo 8, he's gonna take them out.
Yeah.
And the robot goes, missile B, attack squad, sir. Oh, sorry. Missile B attack squad.
And everybody else is. Is in. And the robot wakes them all up.
[00:49:06] Speaker C: Oh, wait, they're also Torpedo eight. They're both. Yeah, it's very confusing. So he yells out to the missile squad, missile eight squad.
And then the Watcher tells us they're the men of Torpedo 8. Yeah, Tech Squad.
[00:49:22] Speaker B: It's just all good parallel.
[00:49:24] Speaker C: They're going to protect Pacific Island. I got it. All right.
[00:49:26] Speaker B: You're gonna protect. Protect Midway. Yeah, yeah. And then. I love that game. We get here, we've got the. The robot wakes up all of Nick Fury and the rest of the Howling Commandos, and they get written out a command on a piece of paper, dude, has been changed.
[00:49:42] Speaker C: I am so glad technology did not turn into these things.
[00:49:46] Speaker B: Yeah, I agree.
[00:49:47] Speaker C: Like, I'm not a big fan of AI to begin with. As a person that works in AI Please beep that out so I don't lose my job. But, like, literally, I'm not beeping that out. 70s 80s idea of the clunker clankers is just like, dude, they're, they're, they're. They're full on hi fi stereo systems on tracks with vacuum hoses.
[00:50:11] Speaker B: Yeah, that's what's cool about him.
When he prints out things for them to read.
[00:50:16] Speaker A: So it's like a fax machine.
[00:50:18] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, dude. You know. You know what your problem is, sir? Stairs.
All right. Oh, yeah.
[00:50:25] Speaker B: Well, they start attacking the station, or Midway station, so it'd be Midway Island. So they're going after that.
There's a full scale attack, and the Watcher says, here we go, Travis. The full scale attack is now underway while your world a similar. While on your world, a similar attack is made by the air fleet from Imperial Japan.
There we go.
[00:50:48] Speaker C: Where does he say that? What page are you on?
[00:50:51] Speaker B: That's on.
[00:50:52] Speaker C: He wakes up even as the Howling Commandos scramble to reach their helmets.
[00:50:58] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:50:58] Speaker C: At Station Midway.
[00:51:01] Speaker B: Yep.
That's the Watcher down below on the
[00:51:04] Speaker C: next page, biting the alien carrier. Okay, Another blast rips away at the Midway, exiting. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Miraculously evading the relevancy of the story, Red Hasgrove Leads missile B. A8 group blast. Scales. Slimy. Oh, my God. A blaster. Slimy Scales all over the galaxy. Some of these lines, guys. Some of these lines.
[00:51:35] Speaker B: Yeah, maybe I was leaving some of that out on purpose.
[00:51:40] Speaker C: What are the Sergeant's motives.
[00:51:45] Speaker B: Sergeant Fury's motives.
[00:51:47] Speaker A: Save his man.
[00:51:50] Speaker C: What do you all gawk? What are. What are you sold? Soul bricks. Gold bricks.
What the hell's a gold brick?
[00:51:58] Speaker B: I don't know what you're talking about.
[00:52:00] Speaker C: So what do y'. All. Gold bricks. Wait, so what do you go. What do you. Yeah. Oh, my God. This sense. So what are. Yeah. Gold bricks. All gawking at.
[00:52:13] Speaker B: I don't know. There's Marty Miller.
[00:52:17] Speaker C: Oh, this is nice panel work here.
[00:52:23] Speaker B: I knew we get you back with the art.
[00:52:25] Speaker A: So.
[00:52:26] Speaker B: Yeah, we get.
So they get their helmets on, they rush into battle.
Is there any more of this fine dialogue you'd like to analyze?
Like before?
I like iguana blast a hole through the. Oh, you just said that. One gold darn hole.
[00:52:42] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm just thinking, like, next time I talk to Tom, I want to talk to him about what?
How he did this music thing. The guy singing along. It's kind of cool.
[00:52:51] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:52:52] Speaker B: Do you think he also did the little paper printouts?
[00:52:57] Speaker A: I'm sure.
[00:52:58] Speaker C: Yeah, usually they. The. The letter will do almost all of that.
[00:53:02] Speaker A: Thank you.
[00:53:05] Speaker C: You know, like, I kind of want to go look to see, there's a part where they're singing in Starlight. I wanted to. I kind of want to go look. I don't remember how Tom handled that when he did the redo.
When he re lettered that.
[00:53:17] Speaker A: So amazing. After he did it again.
[00:53:20] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:53:20] Speaker A: Oh, it's a different book.
[00:53:21] Speaker C: Yeah, it does.
All right, go on.
[00:53:24] Speaker A: Well, we've got to have an ejection chair.
[00:53:28] Speaker B: Oh, you're already. You're already to the ejection chair.
That's far.
[00:53:32] Speaker C: Well, I was checking this. This page here has really good panel work. It's. It's actually quite good. You just jammed through and nothing. Not to glaze Tom too much, but he does a pretty good job hiding the narrative of the Watcher and not robbing these panels of the.
[00:53:48] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, yeah. They're tucked in quite nice.
[00:53:52] Speaker C: Especially.
I mean, this is all wax and pin back then and stuff, you know, so, like, this wasn't easy.
[00:53:58] Speaker A: Yeah, well.
[00:53:59] Speaker B: And we're finding out that there's a traitor somewhere, right?
And could it be the evil Baiton guy he's baiting. Yeah.
[00:54:12] Speaker C: Stop.
[00:54:15] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:54:15] Speaker B: I didn't label it that way. B, E, T, A, n. You say it. How would you say it?
[00:54:20] Speaker C: Master of the Baitons. The Master Baiton.
[00:54:23] Speaker A: And that's. And that's why he's got.
[00:54:26] Speaker C: Take me to your leader, Master Baiton.
[00:54:29] Speaker A: Is he an Alpha or an Omega.
[00:54:32] Speaker C: He's an Omega.
[00:54:32] Speaker B: B. Alphas and Betas.
[00:54:34] Speaker A: Oh, he's a Beta.
[00:54:35] Speaker C: He's a Beta baitan. He's a master Beta baitan.
[00:54:38] Speaker A: Or he's a Alpha Beta. He's Alpha baitan.
Alpha bait. And that would make. The leader says 26 of them.
That's why.
Sorry,
[00:54:56] Speaker C: the leader has nacelles.
[00:55:03] Speaker A: Poor Dan.
[00:55:04] Speaker B: The leader says. I know what I assured you, dolt. It can only mean that my Terran spy has betrayed me. Oh, who is the Terran spy? We don't know. Then perhaps I should change my tactics. Save the station Midway for later and attack the Yorktown now instead. So now they're going to attack the aircraft carrier. I mean, spaceship carrier. Oh, no.
That's going to be tough for Mr. Hargrove, who's leading his fighter jets right now. You're Travis. We're here.
[00:55:31] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:55:33] Speaker C: Nice panels. Oh, wait, where's the ejection? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. But see this starship, though? It's got nacelles.
[00:55:39] Speaker A: Yeah, it does.
[00:55:41] Speaker B: I wonder where they got that idea from.
Starlight.
[00:55:49] Speaker A: Star Wars.
[00:55:51] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:55:51] Speaker B: Shut up, Greg.
[00:55:53] Speaker C: Okay, this is pretty good.
Got some laser blast, lots of thinking bubbles.
[00:55:58] Speaker A: Oh, laser blast. That's a good movie.
[00:56:02] Speaker C: That's not a good movie at all.
[00:56:04] Speaker B: Dude, it is a YouTube.
[00:56:06] Speaker C: That's. That's what you do. If you have a YouTube channel, you would do bad movies and you're desperate to get some views. Hey, am I wrong?
[00:56:16] Speaker A: I don't have a YouTube channel for that. Podcast.
[00:56:20] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:56:21] Speaker C: Podcast on Wednesdays.
[00:56:23] Speaker B: Why are we attacking that?
[00:56:24] Speaker C: Both of our alarms go off for.
[00:56:26] Speaker A: I know.
[00:56:28] Speaker B: Oh, well, hey, we're tomorrow.
[00:56:31] Speaker C: All right, here's this guy. He's got a piece of paper, he's wearing it.
[00:56:35] Speaker B: The Admiral is a traitor.
And here we get the Nazis.
[00:56:40] Speaker C: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
[00:56:42] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
[00:56:43] Speaker C: He's a crater this whole time. I got a couple problems here.
[00:56:46] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:56:47] Speaker C: Number one, again, with a hat and a helmet. We were just told that wasn't allowed. But number two, where the hell does Admiral come from?
[00:56:57] Speaker A: It showed up.
[00:56:58] Speaker B: He was. The Admiral was in charge of the Midway Station.
[00:57:02] Speaker A: These Nazis, they're everywhere.
Well, here's the question.
[00:57:08] Speaker B: How does Nazis always have monocles?
[00:57:10] Speaker A: Well, how did Sergeant Fury not see this happen?
[00:57:14] Speaker C: Really?
Because they don't have any Nazis in this book. Honestly.
[00:57:20] Speaker B: Okay, we have enough.
[00:57:21] Speaker C: You don't want to offend anybody.
[00:57:23] Speaker B: It's Baron Strucker.
Do they not call him a Nazi? I swear, I thought they did call him a Nazi.
[00:57:29] Speaker C: I'm looking.
[00:57:30] Speaker B: Doesn't he say the Fourth Reich wants to live on or Nazis want to live on at some point?
[00:57:34] Speaker C: I don't remember. Man, this is not a bad book or anything. I don't mean to be negative towards it.
[00:57:38] Speaker A: It's just really. I'm not.
[00:57:40] Speaker B: Yeah, well, he has his elite corps, and his elite corps fights the. Fights the Howling Commandos. They have a big battle, and then he tries to escape.
Baron. The baron and tries to escape, and we get as many illusions as possible. He calls him.
He calls him all the derogatory names they used in World War II for Germans.
[00:58:12] Speaker C: Kraut. You see Kraut here?
[00:58:14] Speaker B: I did.
[00:58:17] Speaker A: I'm looking.
[00:58:18] Speaker B: I see it twice on the.
[00:58:21] Speaker C: On the.
[00:58:21] Speaker B: On the 12 panel grid page.
[00:58:23] Speaker C: It's so revived of the great cause of Nazism.
[00:58:26] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:58:26] Speaker C: Which is purposely squelched. Squelched by this.
Is that a word?
[00:58:33] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:58:35] Speaker C: Anyways. And restore to the power of the master race. The Master Baitans.
[00:58:41] Speaker B: Yeah, I believe they're.
[00:58:42] Speaker C: Master Baitans are cruisers.
[00:58:43] Speaker B: I. I believe they're pretty blatant about it. Yeah, they're pretty blatant about. These guys are Nazis.
[00:58:49] Speaker C: Well, no way. At the beginning it said not Nazis, though.
[00:58:52] Speaker B: Well, no, that's because they had. Again, it's.
[00:58:54] Speaker C: It's.
[00:58:55] Speaker A: It was a bait material. It was a bait switch, Travis.
[00:58:59] Speaker C: Oh, it was a bait and switch.
[00:59:00] Speaker A: Yeah, it's a bait and switch.
[00:59:02] Speaker B: A bait and switch.
[00:59:03] Speaker C: And I got lost because of my reader. I'm blaming all my confusion on the reader.
[00:59:07] Speaker B: It's okay.
The. The lizard folk are very unhappy.
Feel like they've been betrayed. They're gonna crush. Now they're gonna crush the.
[00:59:18] Speaker C: The.
[00:59:19] Speaker B: The battleship or the aircraft carrier.
[00:59:22] Speaker A: Oh, no.
[00:59:23] Speaker C: Oh, man, look at this.
[00:59:26] Speaker B: And it's just. It's bad news.
[00:59:27] Speaker C: 12 panels
[00:59:31] Speaker B: as they're fighting, they. They go to escape.
[00:59:35] Speaker C: I mean, it's not 16.
Yeah, it's not. It's not. Not Frank Miller.
[00:59:39] Speaker A: It's a lot, though.
[00:59:40] Speaker C: Yeah. You know, I really want to. You do a couple 12 panel ones on this book I'm working on right now.
[00:59:45] Speaker A: Yeah.
12 panel book. 12 panel pages.
[00:59:49] Speaker C: Yeah. I've been really like. I want to plan them out just right, you know, why don't we just
[00:59:53] Speaker A: go an extra couple more. Four more.
[00:59:57] Speaker C: And do a full 16.
[00:59:58] Speaker A: Yeah, get a full 16, Travis.
[01:00:00] Speaker C: No, it's tempting. It's tempting because.
[01:00:02] Speaker A: Why don't we put some cross thatch in there in the background for the artist, and then maybe some.
Maybe some chain link fence on those 16 panels?
[01:00:14] Speaker C: I mean.
[01:00:17] Speaker A: Yeah, okay.
[01:00:18] Speaker C: No, honestly, these it's just so rare to see 12s and 16s or even 10, nines and tens and stuff. But like unless there's an action sequence set, right? Like, because you might have a set in a. Like a set in a row that are really fast because they're trying to show some quick action. But to see these like these old grids, like this like 12 panel grid or 16 panel grid. You know, the 16 panel grid which you know, made famous by Frank Miller in his book the Dark Knight Night Returns, where he used The Frank the 16 panel grid to really express.
[01:00:55] Speaker B: Make you go to sleep point of.
[01:00:57] Speaker C: Of you know, the media and how the media reacts to people. Because the media itself talks like fox news in 16 panel grids. And I think Rick Miller's Dark Knight Returns really brings out what. Who we are as a society. As a society. We are 16 panels per page of just garble.
[01:01:18] Speaker A: I think you're right, Travis. I mean in, in his book, it really does bring out a dark night. Much like after 5:30, 6 o', clock, 7 o', clock, 8 o', clock, 9 o', clock, it is truly a dark night of just pure talking heads on tv.
[01:01:34] Speaker C: That reminds me, we're supposed to have a call after this.
[01:01:37] Speaker B: Yeah, okay, wait, is this a. Are we Talking about this 12 panel grid with the fight scene still where he's trying to.
[01:01:45] Speaker A: That actually it's a 12 panel war, but there's actual action in it as opposed to The Frank Miller 16 panel talking head.
[01:01:53] Speaker C: Actually this is actually. So let me be really frank.
[01:02:01] Speaker A: What if Dan is just dying over there?
[01:02:05] Speaker C: This page is actually pretty well done, to be honest.
[01:02:07] Speaker A: Like the artist.
[01:02:08] Speaker C: The artist and the letter. The artist has done a really good job setting up in the letter to get. For an a letter to get lettering on here. I would have strangled the writer and I'm a writer and I would have been like, what the wrong with you?
Well, I can cuss, right? It was. We're allowed to cuss again.
[01:02:23] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[01:02:24] Speaker C: I would have been like, what the is wrong with. This is terrible, dude. How am I supposed to write this? Like what is even happening on the back of this guy's ass?
[01:02:32] Speaker A: But you can see it and it's happening and you know, is that a
[01:02:37] Speaker C: superimposement of something to give us a close up of or is that the fuck is happening here?
Can you one of you guys look at this? Tell me what's happening with this guy's ass?
[01:02:49] Speaker A: Dan, what's going on with his ass?
[01:02:51] Speaker B: Why are you asking me?
[01:02:53] Speaker A: I We're trying to figure it out. We can't tell. We want to know that helmet is back there. His spaceship helmet is in his ass.
[01:03:03] Speaker C: Oh I see, so they, they click their helmets to the back of their ass. But yes, I am going to point out that in no, no image I can find before this, were they doing that like there are plenty of pictures leading up to this moment. In fact, right here in panel 1 2. Panel 2, no helmet hanging off the back of his ass. There's a helmet hanging off the back of it. There's another helmet that.
Is that a mre probably in his ass.
[01:03:31] Speaker B: Okay, well the important thing is that the Nazi, it's blown out the escape hatch and just flying through space and dying.
[01:03:39] Speaker C: So.
[01:03:39] Speaker A: Never seen that before in a movie.
[01:03:42] Speaker B: Yeah, we'll.
[01:03:44] Speaker C: That's why we have double airlock doors now to raise the suspense of when you have to push one out of the airlock. But in the old days you just had single airlock doors. But now double airlock, it helps, it helps you because you can put a timer in there. Thank you. James Cameron.
[01:03:59] Speaker B: Yeah, the traitorous Wolfgang Von Strucker.
[01:04:03] Speaker A: Apparently the guy's name he Von Struckered out.
[01:04:08] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:04:08] Speaker C: Oh my God. We're almost done. Thank God.
[01:04:10] Speaker B: Yeah, we were. I know. That's why, you know, dad's getting so mad over there.
[01:04:15] Speaker A: He's like, ah, you guys, we're almost done.
[01:04:17] Speaker C: What year did this come out?
[01:04:21] Speaker B: 1979.
[01:04:23] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean for, for the time. It's a pretty amazing stuff.
[01:04:31] Speaker C: This is a very Star wars looking fleet in the background there.
[01:04:35] Speaker B: Oh, they, they say that on the COVID don't they?
[01:04:37] Speaker A: Yeah, it's a Star wars looking fleet with a Battlestar Galactica story.
[01:04:41] Speaker B: I mean they literally say yes, first Star wars, then Battlestar Galactica and now.
[01:04:47] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean I'm, I'm sitting there thinking to myself, this is exactly, this is.
[01:04:52] Speaker C: We've already made friends with the calamari AC.
[01:04:55] Speaker A: Oh yes, calamari. So delicious.
[01:04:57] Speaker C: They are.
[01:05:00] Speaker B: Well we, yes. So we get everybody back on the ship. They're all going home.
The bad guys are mad.
They're like, we'll get them.
[01:05:12] Speaker C: Hahaha.
[01:05:13] Speaker B: He's like, no, we're going to leave and fight another day.
And the final battle begins on the baby on the Baitin flagship.
Before you start making fun of it, the enemy cruisers streak their defense and we've got another big space battle.
But they managed to take out the bad guys with the last barrage, kill their commander.
And then flying in the ship, Nick Fury sees Hargrove down on the ground because he made it from his what Travis pointed out his cool little space like ejector seat.
And he gets in a big fight with the robot. And here, Travis, here's where it really starts for us. Nick Fury holds up a. A wrench to our robot friend to get him to comply.
And makes him fly down and save Hargrove. And then our robot friend gets blown up.
[01:06:25] Speaker C: He is bloomed up.
[01:06:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
Do you think that Tom drew that Bloom noise?
[01:06:35] Speaker C: It should be tomorrow, but on these older books I can't tell.
Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Like normally that's who does that. But looking at it, I can't tell from here.
[01:06:47] Speaker B: It's like half a couple.
[01:06:49] Speaker C: Yeah, because that light. Yeah, that. The way the ink on that looks like it's from the original page and not a wax over or whatever it was called back then.
[01:06:58] Speaker B: It may be too that he only wrote Bloom because they had Kabloom originally. He didn't want to cover up the whole page of the art.
[01:07:07] Speaker C: I would have messed with the guys because you would have put it on the opposite side of the robot. But he needs a red we. We've been hit by. We been hit by.
[01:07:15] Speaker A: Oh my God. Yeah, it would have been weird.
[01:07:19] Speaker C: Red we been hit.
Weave.
Weave.
Jesus Christ. We been 20 different people working on the story.
Anyways, I get called out for. I like, literally I get called out for the dumbest crap.
And these guys have like 30 people taking credit for the story and no one catches little things like that.
There's a couple of in this book.
[01:07:47] Speaker B: Well, it's a good thing they picked up Hard Grove because then now they need a pilot because their pilot is down.
[01:07:52] Speaker C: Exploded.
[01:07:53] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[01:07:54] Speaker C: So basically they use the robot to go get Hargrove to replace the robot.
So like AI now.
Yeah, yeah, but.
[01:08:02] Speaker B: And then they have their Star wars ending. And then they have their Star wars ending. A new hope ending. Everybody's standing there to get their awards, right?
[01:08:11] Speaker C: The panels on this are terrible, but
[01:08:15] Speaker B: they're not going to get an award because they disobeyed orders.
And he's like, thanks, Sam. Because he thinks they've transplanted Sam's body into the robot. He's like, I'm not Sam.
[01:08:27] Speaker C: Haha.
[01:08:28] Speaker B: And the watcher's like, thus a battle has been won, though an interplanted interplanetary. Can I say words? Interplanetary war yet rages. A conflict which I shall observe without interference.
For I am not. For am I not?
I am not. That'd be A different sentence for am I not the watcher? Yes, you definitely are.
[01:08:50] Speaker A: You are.
[01:08:50] Speaker B: And you brought us a story.
[01:08:53] Speaker C: You know, the panels on this page are bad.
[01:08:56] Speaker A: The panels on this page, I don't know, I mean, it's good.
[01:09:00] Speaker C: But look at this board down here. Like just shift that.
[01:09:04] Speaker B: Oh, it's a lot of dialogue.
[01:09:07] Speaker C: That very last panel should somehow be bigger. I don't know what's going on there. But hey, do you know what the very first line of the very first letter on the what if letter page is?
[01:09:17] Speaker A: What
[01:09:20] Speaker C: reply your Hitler problem. Presented in what?
[01:09:22] Speaker B: I'm looking at that too. Yes, your Hitler problem. I was about to bring that up in what if number six. Apparently there was a Hitler problem.
Oh, and apparently if you want to talk about Hitler with a red blooded American, you can write Steve Allen Bennett at 842 Hunt street in Akron, Ohio, 44306 and talk all about Hitler in the what if books.
Like, I'm sure he's still there.
[01:09:52] Speaker C: Since Adolf Hitler has been as much of an object of perverse fascination as Jack the River, the depth of the man of Adolf Hitler has been the subject of mystery at least as long as with your own mythical creations, you have given us answers. In that case, I choose of, of course, number one.
Oh, boy, we already seen enough Hitler. Okay, I get it.
[01:10:18] Speaker B: Yeah. From Steve Allen Bennett at 842 Hunt St. Akron, Ohio, 944306.
[01:10:23] Speaker C: Why are you doxing this guy? 40 years later, 60 years.
[01:10:26] Speaker B: His name is right. I, how can I dox him? Is right in the comic.
[01:10:30] Speaker A: Wait a minute. Is this just like in, in the Blues Brothers where they're like, yeah, it
[01:10:37] Speaker B: might be, it might be the address to what would be an Akron, Ohio. That's. That, that's not the address to his house. That's the address to the tire factory.
[01:10:48] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, to the tire factory.
Yes, Ohio Nazis.
[01:10:53] Speaker B: Goodyear Tires, right?
[01:10:54] Speaker A: Goodyear Tires, Yeah. He doesn't give out the real address.
[01:10:59] Speaker B: Who would send their own real address to have it published in a comic book?
[01:11:02] Speaker C: I know.
[01:11:03] Speaker B: Actually, no, we talked about that before. It was actually cool. That's how you actually had pen pals and people met each other in the, in comicdom back then.
[01:11:11] Speaker A: Somebody shows up at your house. I want to talk more about comics with you. I don't know who you are. Why are you here?
[01:11:17] Speaker B: You know what's crazy here? Roy Thomas, editor. Mark Grunwald, assistant editor.
He stuck around Marvel for a long time.
[01:11:26] Speaker C: A little while.
[01:11:28] Speaker B: Cool to see where you got started out there too. Of Course.
Streets of Poison.
[01:11:33] Speaker A: Ah, Such a good book, Dan. We should revisit it.
[01:11:37] Speaker B: Never. Never will I ever.
[01:11:40] Speaker C: Why don't.
[01:11:40] Speaker A: You don't think we should do, like, an anniversary episode?
[01:11:44] Speaker B: No. So this book.
I. I liked the book. I thought it was a fun read.
I thought it was a. It's what what if should be. There wasn't 5,000 editorial notes.
They took a simple concept. They said, what if that concept was different for some reason, they found a point in history, they changed that point in history. They said, it's different for this reason.
And then you had the thing. Yes. There's some cheesy stuff in there, right. Like the bowler hat and the cigars in the domes. But I think that's sort of appropriate for a space romp in the 60s. To Travis's point, I know this is written the 70s, but they're comparing it to, like, the Howling Commando's original comic. Right.
And that was done in 63. I'm totally okay with the campy Silver Age stuff that's in here.
I. I thought the book was fine. You know, would I go out of my way to go pick it up? No.
If it was in a dollar bin and I saw it now, would I grab it? Certainly, yeah. I mean, it's. I. I like, as Travis pointed out many times, Tom's lettering is great. I thought the art was great. I thought it pops off the page a lot. There were a couple weird paneling things at the end, Travis, where they try to smash the end of the story there.
[01:12:56] Speaker C: Yeah. That happens to you sometimes. Usually you want to go back and try to fix that.
[01:12:59] Speaker B: Yeah. But most of the other paneling you liked, right?
[01:13:03] Speaker C: Oh, there's some really good paneling. It's very. You know, the paneling back here is extremely limited because you're using that. This whole wax system for everything. It's like glue. You said the guide pages, and you. Never mind. Anyways, it's so. It's always weird to me because, like. Oh, he did. He did. He did. He. He did. He did.
[01:13:21] Speaker A: Did what?
[01:13:22] Speaker C: Hang on.
[01:13:23] Speaker A: Yeah.
Yeah, he's finding it. He's finding it.
[01:13:31] Speaker C: We can't see.
[01:13:32] Speaker B: We can't see it. It's not gonna work. It's too shiny.
[01:13:35] Speaker A: Oh, he did the thing. He did the thing that you wanted to see in Starlight. That's. He's showing off starlight to those who are listening, because Tom Orenschowski.
[01:13:46] Speaker B: Oh. So Starlight. Well, this was a fun book. Greg, your thoughts?
[01:13:49] Speaker A: Oh, my thoughts on the story.
[01:13:52] Speaker B: You thought it was Terrible.
[01:13:53] Speaker A: I honestly didn't think it was terrible.
Honestly. Okay, so comparatively, you want to compare it to TV shows and stuff like that. Yes, it was comparable to Battlestar Galactica and stuff like that of the time. But also, if you ever watch Space above and beyond, it was very much in league with the storyline of that, so. But humanistically, story, human humanistic stories, I
[01:14:18] Speaker C: would say, you know, you bring up Space above and beyond just now.
[01:14:21] Speaker A: I. I did.
You can't.
[01:14:23] Speaker C: I did that anymore. How would you, how would you. Why would you do that to the, your listeners?
[01:14:28] Speaker A: I know I do it to the listeners to leave them hanging, give them more, give them that yearning for that thing that they. They're like, I remember that show from back in the day and there's no way I can ever watch it.
[01:14:38] Speaker B: The desire.
[01:14:39] Speaker C: The clickers.
[01:14:40] Speaker A: Yes, the Clickers. That's. I mean, it had that feel.
The story had that feel.
And it, it definitely hit that, that, that feel for me on the humanistic side.
Humanistic side, if you will, characters that were brought up, as we see with the Howling Commandos. We have a couple of Howling Commandos in which we talk about.
If you were to compare it to other things.
Yes, of its time, you had your Battlestar Galactica, your Star wars and your Star Trek, but this was very much a Deep Space Nine type story.
[01:15:21] Speaker B: Yeah, it was not a star. Star Trek should not be associated with this story at all.
[01:15:26] Speaker A: Deep Space Nine, though.
[01:15:27] Speaker B: Yeah, but it wasn't. Deep Space Nine is much later.
[01:15:30] Speaker A: I know, I'm not. I'm just saying in my mind.
In my mind. And that is what is great about things like this is we can take things from our mind and put it there and say, that's where my point of reference is, Dan.
It doesn't have to be what the point of reference is at the time, but what makes a point for someone else that might be listening and saying, well, do I like this thing over here? I do.
Can I go back and read this thing and say, wow, that's kind of cool?
[01:16:05] Speaker B: Yeah, I understand your point. I was just thinking, though, they tried everything in this issue to not be Star Trek at all.
[01:16:11] Speaker A: I know, and that was.
[01:16:12] Speaker C: It was cool.
[01:16:13] Speaker A: They did everything to not be Star Trek. But D Space 9.
[01:16:18] Speaker B: No, Star Trek is much better than this. That's the problem.
No, I thought they wanted a fun outer space romp with a war and the Howling Commandos and make it like the 60s. And they did it.
Travis, in the other one of the what ifs we covered, we counted. What was it like 36 editorial references.
[01:16:38] Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
[01:16:39] Speaker B: And it's like, it's too overwhelming. Right. You need to make, to make the what if? Books fun.
I think they need to be, they need to be both accessible to a veteran reader. Right. Who wants to get the references and get the editorial notes, but also has to be accessible to somebody who's just picking up the book and as a casual reader. And when you have 36 editorial references, I don't think that really makes it accessible.
[01:17:05] Speaker C: You know what made this book accessible?
If I lived in 1979, I was watching television. The writing in this is so 79.
[01:17:12] Speaker B: Television.
[01:17:14] Speaker C: Like the way everybody talks, the slangs, it's all like a bunch of guys, like, who watch a lot of television. I don't know. I, I.
Hogan's Heroes stuff.
[01:17:28] Speaker A: Oh, yes.
[01:17:29] Speaker C: You know, like the, the choices of how they've tried each other. Yeah. It's all very much that. So I think that would have made this very accessible. Plus, I feel like in 79, people were still like, oh, man, World War II.
[01:17:43] Speaker B: I don't think they were, though.
[01:17:45] Speaker A: I don't know.
[01:17:47] Speaker C: Do you watch movies from 1979?
[01:17:50] Speaker A: Have you met my grandparents?
[01:17:51] Speaker B: Yeah, I think they were. I think they were, but I think it was fading. Right. So at least in mar. Well, I'm going to stay in the comic book world for a minute. Right.
Captain America had, had tried to shift away from always just fighting Nazis by this point. Right. You had.
They were trying, they were trying to get out of that. Even, even a lot of, Even the things that were always slow to move, even professional wrestling and started shifting from that. Right.
Instead of having guys.
[01:18:23] Speaker C: Yeah, oh, yeah, yeah. They moved to the chic. Yeah, yeah.
[01:18:27] Speaker B: They'd move to that stuff. And I mean, they still had, like, Baron Von Rashke still existed.
That's the end of Daddy Von Eric's career. Right, Papa?
[01:18:40] Speaker C: I. I didn't watch wrestling in 1979.
[01:18:43] Speaker B: Yeah, well, you know, history, though. It's your favorite subject.
[01:18:47] Speaker C: Look, it's southpaw wrestling. That's the only one I cared about from that era.
[01:18:51] Speaker B: So.
Yeah.
So, but anyway, I think, like, some of pop culture was moving away from it. I mean, you always have war movies.
I have a hole in movie watching, though, because I was born in 1974. So, like, great movies that were made from like 78 to, like, you know, or I would say like 76 to.
Or that year even 74. 74 to, like, French Connection. Unless.
[01:19:21] Speaker A: Unless.
[01:19:21] Speaker B: Yeah, unless I go back and we're Eagles Dare.
Yes, yes. So of those Three. I have day afternoon.
You can keep naming them, but what I'm trying to. The point I'm trying to make is outside of like, Star Wars, Chinatown, Rocky.
[01:19:38] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:19:38] Speaker B: And Dog Day Afternoon, which I chose to go back and watch. If I don't choose to go back and watch, it's a hole in my ch. Because I wasn't conscious of movies then, and so I don't know what all there. And you're like firing 5,000 movies at me right now. And I haven't seen most of them. I've seen.
[01:19:54] Speaker C: Because he has a wiki list in front of him because he cheats.
[01:19:56] Speaker A: I wish I just.
[01:19:59] Speaker B: Just in my head, Godfather, I've seen the one. I've never. I've actually never sat down and watched the Godfather.
[01:20:07] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
Who are you?
[01:20:10] Speaker B: It's like son of hours long.
[01:20:12] Speaker A: You need to watch Dan.
[01:20:15] Speaker C: You need to wake up on Saturday morning theatrical release. You're good.
[01:20:19] Speaker B: I'd rather.
[01:20:19] Speaker A: You need to watch.
[01:20:21] Speaker B: I'd rather watch Citizen Kane three more times.
[01:20:24] Speaker A: No, you need to watch all the Godfathers.
[01:20:26] Speaker C: I can't stand Citizen Kane for some reason. I don't know.
[01:20:29] Speaker B: Of course you can't.
[01:20:30] Speaker C: You.
[01:20:30] Speaker A: It's so good, though.
[01:20:31] Speaker C: Oh, you know what it is? It's because the whole time I'm like, who's in the room with him? And I spend the whole movie trying to figure out who the hell was in the room with him.
[01:20:38] Speaker A: It's a sled, cuz.
[01:20:40] Speaker C: He died alone.
[01:20:41] Speaker A: Yes.
[01:20:42] Speaker C: So how does anyone know what his last words are?
[01:20:45] Speaker A: Nobody. His typewriter, his pen, his paper.
[01:20:49] Speaker C: It's bugged me my whole life.
Anyways.
It's because of that Ghostbusters episode. The real Ghostbusters? Oh, yes, because they made a Citizen Kane episode.
[01:21:01] Speaker B: Everybody makes Citizen Kane our episode. I mean.
[01:21:03] Speaker C: Yeah, but that's the thing that helped me realize that there's no way anyone could have heard it.
[01:21:08] Speaker A: No one would know. It's like when a tree falls in the woods.
[01:21:13] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:21:14] Speaker B: All right.
[01:21:14] Speaker C: Where were you going?
[01:21:15] Speaker A: Dan hasn't watched a lot of movies.
[01:21:18] Speaker B: I was gonna. You know, I'm gonna say something.
I'm gonna say something, and I'm gonna transition a little bit.
[01:21:23] Speaker A: Okay.
[01:21:27] Speaker B: I am watching something I thought I would hate and I thought I would despise.
And I watched a couple episodes. I really like it. No. Stuart fails to save the universe.
[01:21:36] Speaker A: Yes.
And I love it. It's pretty good. I didn't think I was gonna like it either. I thought I was gonna be like,
[01:21:44] Speaker B: I hate this show.
[01:21:46] Speaker A: Same. I was like, this is dumb. And I was like, okay, first episode, let's watch down to one and then three episodes in. I know he's gonna hate it.
[01:21:56] Speaker B: Travis will hate it.
[01:21:57] Speaker C: If you put the ending of the movie in the title of the movie. I don't know if I'm gonna be able to handle that. He's gonna have a hard time. Citizen Kane and Rosebud, he's gonna hate.
[01:22:07] Speaker A: Watch it for us.
[01:22:09] Speaker B: Yeah, so there's that. The other thing I wanted to talk about, obviously is Travis. You probably have updates on two projects.
[01:22:16] Speaker A: Yeah, tell us.
[01:22:19] Speaker B: Starlight. Well, three projects. Four projects.
[01:22:22] Speaker C: Starlight's one print.
[01:22:24] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
[01:22:27] Speaker C: That way. We're on this call, see if it started yet or not. And then we've got. Oh, I. I have a Kickstarter going, right? Well, I don't. But I'm in a Kickstarter right now. Yeah, that was just talked about in Comics Beat.
[01:22:41] Speaker A: Oh, shoot.
[01:22:42] Speaker C: That's. Yeah. You know, it's almost as good as cbr, who's running non stop articles about Matthew Lillard having a fan yell at him for no reason.
[01:22:51] Speaker A: Wow. Oh, no.
[01:22:52] Speaker B: Is that top 10 fans that would yell at.
At Lillard and then top 10 lillards that would yell at fans and then top 10 worst lillard powers in history.
[01:23:03] Speaker C: He literally had a moment where someone had a parasocial relationship breakdown on him and he just walked away from it. Because when you're famous enough, you know that that's happening. You know what I'm saying? Like, you recognize that someone's having a parasocial relationship snap a reality and the person comes and has that and it gets recorded.
And instead of pointing that out, they're just kind of banking on that. Like, look how he's an. It's not an. That's an unusual situation that he's backed into. And when fans have parasocial relationship breakdowns like that, it is very hard to navigate anything other than to walk away.
And that's what it does.
[01:23:40] Speaker B: It's cbr. So all they're there.
[01:23:42] Speaker C: I mean, they're leaning into top 10
[01:23:44] Speaker B: parasocial breakdowns in comics.
[01:23:46] Speaker C: That's probably what's going to be. But anyway, so the point is, is I'm in a book called Systemic, and it is a cyberpunk book, of course, and it's with a lot of really other great creators that I really like and I'm really proud to be in it with them.
And that is on Kickstarter right now called Systemic two.
[01:24:04] Speaker B: Okay.
[01:24:04] Speaker C: And I forgot because the publisher has Numbers in the name of the publishing company, and I don't do numbers. So it's called something like 7, 3, 0 publishing or something.
[01:24:17] Speaker B: Well, you know, I feel like I've been here before, so let's.
[01:24:20] Speaker C: Let's check that out.
[01:24:21] Speaker A: And then Travis doesn't do numbers, like, on pages.
[01:24:23] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. And then they're filming the. The cyborg movie, which is the last Albert Pugh film.
And I was that guy important.
He's the king of B movies. There's a documentary. Anyways, like, just. Just to talk about real quick. We wouldn't have a lot of stuff we have today in today's media if he had inspired people, you know what I'm saying? Like, he would make a B movie, and then other people would go run with that concept because they'd see us be moving, go, oh, how do we make that even bigger?
So there's, you know, there's things like he did Sword and Sorcerer also. We have Sword and Sorcerer movies like crazy. He does a movie called Radioactive Dreams, and you can literally watch the history of Fallout. Fallout. And they'll talk about how they were watching Radioactive Dreams when they were working on Fallout. And you can definitely see Fallout and Radioactive Dreams. And you can see things like when he gets into the Nemesis stuff, he is into the cyberpunk loop anyways. So, yeah, so his last movie that he was filming, they're just now finishing it up. But we're probably gonna have to do a Kickstarter for the. For the film or the film people are. But it should be good just to get that last bit of cash they're gonna need, because this has really just been funded out of everybody's individual paycheck to paycheck extra, you know what I'm saying? Out of pocket by all the actors and actresses and everybody involved. So I might have to do a Kickstarter for that. Yeah, definitely. Just to get it done.
So that project should be going up, and then I know the one you're waiting for, which is the Nemesis. Nemesis graphic novel, which has. Sitting on Kickstarter right now. It's the Return of Alex Rain.
Go ahead.
That's your cue.
[01:26:13] Speaker B: It says launching soon.
Is that what you wanted me to say?
[01:26:20] Speaker A: No.
Yes.
[01:26:22] Speaker C: Perfect.
[01:26:22] Speaker A: Nailed it. Nailed it.
[01:26:25] Speaker C: So that. That should be coming out soon. The. Hold on. That is just. We're trying to make sure the Starlight printing gets done because it's going to be very difficult to manage the logistics of those prints at the same time as trying to run a Kickstarter campaign for Nemesis So there you go. Those are the projects that are up.
[01:26:43] Speaker B: Okay, so Nemesis.
[01:26:45] Speaker C: There's a bunch more that I can't talk about as usual.
[01:26:47] Speaker B: Nemesis, the space robot that blew up in the front of the ship, is launching soon.
[01:26:53] Speaker A: Yes, I would say isn't. Isn't Brian's Kickstarter on Overcast.
[01:26:57] Speaker C: Oh, we could also have.
Oh, my God, I am the worst.
[01:27:02] Speaker A: No, that's okay.
[01:27:03] Speaker C: That's why I brought it up, Brian Nighthawks. Yep, yep.
[01:27:06] Speaker B: Fully funded.
[01:27:07] Speaker A: Fully funded.
[01:27:08] Speaker B: But keep on going on our podcast.
[01:27:10] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, I heard that. I heard that. Yeah.
[01:27:12] Speaker A: Get that stretch goal.
[01:27:15] Speaker B: Yeah. I'm going to start writing top 10 kickstarters that fund on our podcast.
[01:27:21] Speaker A: Yes. And. And. And then we'll get all those people that want to do their Kickstarters and do an episode on the podcast to come on so that they could get their funding on the podcast.
[01:27:32] Speaker B: And so that's how it works. And then we have top 10 lists all the time, and we become the number one comic, like, information site in the world because.
[01:27:39] Speaker A: Yes.
[01:27:39] Speaker B: Top 10 best things that happen when Travis is talking. Go ahead, Travis.
[01:27:46] Speaker C: Burp.
[01:27:47] Speaker B: See?
[01:27:48] Speaker A: Top 10 burps when on Funny book forensics.
[01:27:51] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[01:27:53] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:27:54] Speaker A: Top 10. 15 panel books.
[01:27:57] Speaker B: Top 10 ads that pop up on a CBR page.
[01:28:00] Speaker C: Next time, can we do something fun?
[01:28:03] Speaker B: This was fun. What are you talking about?
[01:28:04] Speaker C: I think we should do a mass mini shiru.
[01:28:07] Speaker B: A what?
[01:28:08] Speaker C: Messimune shiru. Huh?
[01:28:11] Speaker A: Yep. Yoi.
[01:28:13] Speaker B: Great. What?
[01:28:14] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, no, I think.
[01:28:16] Speaker B: I think I would not be interested in that.
[01:28:19] Speaker C: Yeah, you would.
Yeah, you would. Yeah.
[01:28:22] Speaker A: So you had to wear a VR goggle headset.
[01:28:25] Speaker C: Oh, can we do an episode in VR?
[01:28:27] Speaker B: This is.
This is. No, I have some great savvies. This is. This is. Have you met children's author Greg Smith?
[01:28:35] Speaker A: Yes.
[01:28:36] Speaker C: Oh, zeros. No. What?
[01:28:40] Speaker B: Junior Braves.
[01:28:42] Speaker A: Yeah. Hi.
[01:28:43] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:28:44] Speaker A: What? We're gonna do a VR headset chat.
[01:28:47] Speaker B: No, I don't think I'm doing that.
[01:28:49] Speaker C: Why not? Come on, do it.
[01:28:52] Speaker B: So anyway, I thought we'll go bowling.
[01:28:54] Speaker A: That's. That's actually pretty fun because, like, Travis,
[01:28:57] Speaker B: we can go bowling.
[01:28:58] Speaker A: Well, Travis has all these, like, places that he likes to go. There's bowling. There's mine.
[01:29:03] Speaker B: Just go bowling. And there's non fishing.
[01:29:05] Speaker C: The fishing is really.
[01:29:06] Speaker A: The fishing.
[01:29:07] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:29:07] Speaker B: Oh, because last time we went bowling in non headset life. Yeah.
[01:29:11] Speaker A: I ended up in physical therapy and, yeah, I broke my ass. Literally. Weak ass.
And I'm back to weak ass again because I got, like, other. Oh, my hip is messed up because not.
[01:29:22] Speaker B: Well, I Taught Ann how to do the exercises with you so you all will be fine.
[01:29:26] Speaker A: Yeah. And then some guy at work was like, my hip hurts. And then he started telling me all those problems, and I was like, you need to go to physical therapy or,
[01:29:33] Speaker B: God, go to the doctor and come to. To come to expand yoga with me and do that.
[01:29:37] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, go to expand yoga.
[01:29:39] Speaker C: You know, I will say, if I was there, I would go to expand yoga with you.
[01:29:43] Speaker B: See? Yeah.
[01:29:43] Speaker A: We could all expand together.
Get hot.
[01:29:47] Speaker C: I mean, I'm expanding anyway, so it's perfect.
[01:29:50] Speaker B: Well, do you know. Do you know what happens if things get you down in life?
[01:29:56] Speaker A: What's that?
[01:29:57] Speaker B: And somebody's mean to you. And let's say.
Let's say a website like, say, called cbr.
[01:30:06] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:30:07] Speaker B: Tried to commit intentional emotional distress against you by continuing to write false top 10 articles about you and harassing you.
[01:30:17] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[01:30:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:30:18] Speaker A: What do you do?
[01:30:19] Speaker B: What would you do then, Greg?
[01:30:20] Speaker A: I. I don't.
[01:30:21] Speaker B: I.
[01:30:21] Speaker A: There's a number I think I would call, but I'm not sure what that number is. You would have to refresh me.
[01:30:28] Speaker B: Who would you call? Who would you call for?
[01:30:30] Speaker A: I.
I think I would call a guy named Paul.
Yeah, I've heard it on a podcast before.
I hear he's really good at solving problems.
[01:30:41] Speaker B: Yeah. Jiu Jitsu Lawyer Paul.
[01:30:44] Speaker A: That's the guy.
[01:30:46] Speaker B: Travis, what if Jiu Jitsu lawyer Paul had been one of the Howling Commandos? Would he have been more interesting than some of the Howling Commandos that were never talked about again after that beginning of the second chapter?
[01:30:57] Speaker C: Yes.
[01:30:59] Speaker B: You think so?
[01:31:00] Speaker C: Yes.
[01:31:01] Speaker B: How do you fought in the robots with Jiu Jitsu? Yeah, duh. Of course.
You're choking out those robots.
[01:31:09] Speaker C: How you can choke out robots.
[01:31:12] Speaker B: He was choking out the Baitons, so.
[01:31:14] Speaker C: Oh, he was choking Baitans.
[01:31:16] Speaker B: Yeah. So if you need. Wow. If you need some. If you need some legal help because somebody has inflicted emotional distress on you.
[01:31:27] Speaker A: Dan has inflicted emotional distress on me.
[01:31:30] Speaker C: I just. I just. I want to say this for the sake of Greg and I. Yeah. Greg and I have nothing against cbr. Please don't give us bad reviews. Thank you. Yes. Yeah, please don't.
[01:31:39] Speaker A: We don't have. Dan has problems with cbr.
I don't.
[01:31:43] Speaker B: Oh, I couldn't see the page. Actually, I have no problems with cbr. I can't see their pages because of all the pop up ads, so.
[01:31:51] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:31:52] Speaker B: Well, you know why somebody did write an article on cbr. They were continuing harassing you. You could call Jiu Jitsu Lawyer Paul at 253-656-4475. But in all seriousness, if you have an employment issue, your employer's not treating you well.
They are replacing you with AI. I don't know, whatever they're doing.
Call him. He might be able to help. He's licensed in California and Washington. So if you call him and talk to Kelly, his assistant, they'll get you set up with the interview. He'll legitimately talk to you face to face about whether or not you have a case or not, so. And be honest with you face to
[01:32:30] Speaker A: face about your case.
[01:32:31] Speaker B: Well, when Paul takes on an employment case, I don't know if you know this, but his jujitsu powers are so strong, he doesn't get paid unless you win.
[01:32:40] Speaker C: Wow.
[01:32:42] Speaker A: You got to win. So he's got to fight for you.
[01:32:46] Speaker B: It turns out when that's the payment structure, you are very honest with people up front about how strong their case is.
[01:32:52] Speaker A: Okay, Fair, Fair. How do you get a hold of again?
[01:32:55] Speaker B: You can call him at 253-656-4475.
And remember, if that other lawyer is a jerk, you could always choke them out. Yeah, good.
[01:33:06] Speaker C: Oh, my God. I just realized something important.
[01:33:08] Speaker A: What's that?
[01:33:09] Speaker C: Overcastcomicbooks.com.
[01:33:11] Speaker B: oh, is that a place where you can get comics like Starlight 1, 2, 3, 4, Nemesis 5, 6, and 7, and graphic novels.
[01:33:20] Speaker C: And Nemesis and Nighthawks.
[01:33:23] Speaker B: And is that a place where you can go to see all the people murdered in the comic?
[01:33:29] Speaker A: Yes. And Battle Grapple, Rebel.
[01:33:32] Speaker C: Are you making a Starlight reference? I just caught that.
[01:33:37] Speaker A: Yep.
[01:33:38] Speaker B: Only prominent gay characters are always murdered in these
[email protected] I like.
[01:33:43] Speaker A: Oh, my God, Dan.
[01:33:44] Speaker C: Oh, my God. Jesus.
[01:33:48] Speaker A: Not all.
[01:33:49] Speaker C: It hurt me too.
[01:33:50] Speaker A: I'm just saying.
[01:33:51] Speaker C: It hurt me too.
[01:33:52] Speaker A: Just wait till the next art.
[01:33:54] Speaker C: Ask Greg. I called Greg crying when I the heart off panel.
[01:33:59] Speaker A: Damn. Just wait till the next.
[01:34:00] Speaker C: Actually, we moved it to on panel. We moved it on panel because of a request by. Yeah. Did you forget we gave him a whole full page death?
[01:34:08] Speaker A: You wanted it, you got it.
[01:34:11] Speaker B: I don't know if I'm madder or happier right now, but it was pretzel, actually.
Well, just because Brett, I actually, Brett and I legitimately had a two hour long conversation about it in Omaha five years ago or whatever. Yeah, like.
[01:34:25] Speaker A: And he's changing this. I'll give you a death. I'm very upset on panel.
[01:34:30] Speaker B: I was.
[01:34:30] Speaker A: No page numbers.
[01:34:32] Speaker B: I was very upset.
[01:34:34] Speaker A: Yes, you were.
[01:34:35] Speaker B: The legitimate. Like, we talked about it for a long time. Like a really Rational, not angry discussion. Just like, you know.
[01:34:43] Speaker A: Oh, I don't know. I don't know if it was rational or not. You were. You were hopped up on red meat. You were angry.
[01:34:50] Speaker B: You know, I'm a very rational person.
People think rationality. They think.
You know, my students last week told me.
My students. Greg told me that they can't imagine I am so rational in the classroom and positive. They can't even imagine me getting emotional about stuff.
[01:35:09] Speaker A: They don't know you. Well, what?
Huh?
What do you say? I've known you for a long time.
[01:35:15] Speaker B: What are you saying? I never get emotional about anything. He's very flatline.
[01:35:19] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:35:20] Speaker C: Yeah. You're so. Yeah.
[01:35:21] Speaker A: You never yelled in your life.
[01:35:23] Speaker B: No, I've never yelled.
[01:35:24] Speaker A: Travis, have you ever seen Dan mad?
And he's like, I don't know how to answer this. I want to answer it nicely.
Travis is okay.
[01:35:37] Speaker C: You know, it's really good. It's this steakhouse I found in Conrad's.
Conrad Cabonis or something.
[01:35:44] Speaker B: Conrad. Okay.
[01:35:45] Speaker C: That's where it's at. Yeah.
[01:35:46] Speaker A: Okay, we're gonna go.
[01:35:47] Speaker C: So.
[01:35:47] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:35:48] Speaker B: When Greg comes for my birthday.
[01:35:51] Speaker C: What? Greg.
[01:35:52] Speaker B: When Greg comes down for my birthday. Yep.
[01:35:54] Speaker C: Oh.
[01:35:54] Speaker A: Oh. So no, I can't come down.
[01:35:56] Speaker B: All right, when you heard it here, folks, Greg said he was coming down for my birthday.
[01:36:01] Speaker A: That's the end of the podcast.
[01:36:02] Speaker B: Goodbye, everybody is over. Great.
[01:36:06] Speaker A: I love you guys, but just tomatoes.
[01:36:08] Speaker B: Bye.
We're on.
[01:36:13] Speaker A: There we go. Hit the button.
[01:36:14] Speaker B: Travis, why? Did you do something to make a fuzzy noise?
[01:36:17] Speaker A: Why? Oh, fuzzy noise.
[01:36:20] Speaker B: Yeah. Do you undo whatever you just did?
[01:36:22] Speaker A: Undo the fuzz.
[01:36:23] Speaker B: There we go. There we go.
[01:36:24] Speaker C: I don't have any of that.
[01:36:25] Speaker A: Oh, well, we got the fuzz.
[01:36:28] Speaker B: Yeah, we got your fuzz. Whatever you just did broke everything. You hit a button and then it broke everything. No, not that button. Button on computer.
[01:36:38] Speaker A: It's funny, when Travis calls, we don't get that, but when he's on the show.
[01:36:43] Speaker C: I just want to set the record straight.
Yes, the alarm for our podcast goes off on Wednesday, not on Tuesdays during your podcast. And I call it 5pm because I'm driving home and we have legitimate comic book business to do, and I forget it's Tuesday because I work in a corporal world where we don't have days of the week.
[01:37:03] Speaker B: Travis, what did you change right now?
Yeah, because now we hear a buzz, like you started, you reached down and hit something, and now it's a fuzz.
[01:37:13] Speaker C: Said to. Not. I said it was a little notification said that you were recording.
[01:37:20] Speaker A: Now, now hit the recording button. And now. Now we're recording.
[01:37:25] Speaker B: I'm going to stop it.
