[00:00:06] Speaker A: Never was allowed to hit the button. That's the problem.
[00:00:08] Speaker B: I, I. You allowed me to hit the button once in a while. Except for when you gave me the ability back again and then I did not. And then you not.
[00:00:18] Speaker C: Well, we haven't heard the soundboard in quite a while.
[00:00:21] Speaker A: Oh, we don't need the soundboard.
[00:00:22] Speaker B: Oh, you get the sound fine. You get the soundboard once in a while. Oh, yeah, you. You got it a lot in the last episode.
[00:00:28] Speaker A: We don't. We don't need the soundboard.
I think my mic filters out the soundboard. I should have gotten Greg a better mic.
Yeah, if you had a better mic, we'd ignore the stupid soundboard.
[00:00:38] Speaker B: I have a great mic, Dan.
It's a great mic that is.
[00:00:44] Speaker A: I, I, I.
Did I give you the same. Did I tell you to get the same mic I have?
[00:00:49] Speaker B: I got the same mic.
[00:00:51] Speaker A: I got the same mic. Do you have a goodwill mic?
[00:00:53] Speaker B: Like, No, I got the mic. I got the same mic Travis and I got so that we could do the Narrative Gunslingers podcast.
[00:01:01] Speaker A: So you listen to Travis, but you won't listen to me?
[00:01:03] Speaker B: Well, I got the mic that some nice folks that we used to be friendly with told us to get.
[00:01:11] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
Speaking of those nice folks.
Speaking of those nice folks, there's now merch available in the shop.
Yay.
[00:01:20] Speaker B: Go get it.
[00:01:21] Speaker A: Which I was considering whether or not we could sell that. Actually,
[00:01:26] Speaker B: we can.
[00:01:27] Speaker C: What is it? Funny Book Forensics. Hats and shirts. Because it is.
[00:01:31] Speaker A: Look at that.
[00:01:33] Speaker B: Funny books forensics, hats and shirts. You can get T shirts, sweatshirts, baseball caps, and beanies.
[00:01:39] Speaker A: The beanies are awesome.
[00:01:40] Speaker B: The beanies are awesome.
[00:01:42] Speaker C: So I don't have to wait for y' all to make it to a East coast convention to get mine?
[00:01:46] Speaker A: No, you can order the same beanie I have. I don't like this. I like this black one. It's fine. But this is my favorite one right here. Oh, I don't have it on the screen. That would. You know, that would help if I show it, but. Yeah, that's.
I have a favorite here. Hang on. There we go.
Boom. Look at that. You can get your own Honey Book Forensics beanie. You can get it in black, too. But.
[00:02:07] Speaker B: But that one.
[00:02:08] Speaker A: That.
[00:02:09] Speaker B: That. That crimson gray one. That one is. That. That is, as the kids would say
[00:02:14] Speaker A: today, fire and yeah. In fact, on our shop page, you can buy all these things, so take that away. Yeah, so if you want some Funny book forensics merch, I'm also, I won't have beanies. There I don't think I'll have hats. I'll have sweatshirts and hoodies on November 7th at the Grid City Comic Show.
[00:02:32] Speaker C: Show.
[00:02:32] Speaker A: See, I got it right. Comic show at the Tacoma Convention center on Saturday.
[00:02:41] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:02:41] Speaker A: With guests like Grand Gregory K. Smith, who's that guy, who knows, like, they haven't done anything important in comics.
[00:02:48] Speaker B: I haven't done anything important in comics.
[00:02:52] Speaker A: I don't think that's true.
[00:02:53] Speaker B: I mean, but compared to Scott Collins,
[00:02:55] Speaker A: that may be true.
[00:02:56] Speaker C: That.
[00:02:56] Speaker B: That is true.
[00:02:57] Speaker A: Yeah. I just.
I don't think it's fair to say you've done nothing important in comics very much. I know we have a guest and Jason has been talking, but yes, we are forgetting.
We are forgetting rule number one of having guests, as Randy Emberlin has shared with us. You actually have to let the guest introduce themselves or you have to introduce the guest.
[00:03:18] Speaker B: Yes, it's true. We have a guest. We have a friend of the show.
Friend of. I mean.
[00:03:24] Speaker A: I mean, I've been on this person's podcast before.
[00:03:26] Speaker B: Yes, you have.
[00:03:28] Speaker A: Yeah. And then I was looking back, has Jason been on the show? And I was like, I don't think so. Which is weird because I thought Jason was on the show.
[00:03:35] Speaker B: Yes. No, we just talked to Jason on a pretty regular basis, like.
[00:03:39] Speaker C: Yep.
Right.
[00:03:41] Speaker B: It feels like he's been on the show.
[00:03:44] Speaker C: Almost feel like a backstage producer for, you know, so Cap Wolf, you know, the good old days.
[00:03:53] Speaker A: That is true.
[00:03:56] Speaker C: But yeah, no, yeah, no. Thanks for having me.
I'm Jason been around with some podcasts. They're now long defunct, but did Saturday mornings cartoons, comics and serials and then fanning the geekdom both Just one was about, you know, pop culture cartoons you watched when you were kids. And Fanny the geeked on my top to different people who had just experts in different parts of fandoms, you know, from Greg and his comic book writing to, you know, people like Blake Wright, who wrote a book about unproduced toys and did three volumes of books of toys that had never been produced.
And so, you know, just trying to get out there and talk to people and just see what they like.
[00:04:52] Speaker A: Well, as the listeners of this podcast are aware, I. I hate books about comic books. Oh, yeah, yeah. There's none behind me at all.
[00:05:00] Speaker B: None. None at all. Dan despises the knowledge of comics.
[00:05:06] Speaker C: No history for him.
He's going blind.
Yeah.
[00:05:10] Speaker B: He just. He's just like, I make it up.
[00:05:13] Speaker A: That's what. What did. What did Travis tell us? We were like, it's like when I come on the Podcast, you just start telling history and it's boring. And I'm like, okay, Travis, thanks.
[00:05:24] Speaker B: You have to now. Have to. Now you have to say which Travis, as there are two.
[00:05:28] Speaker A: Travis. Oh, sorry, that'd be.
[00:05:30] Speaker B: That.
[00:05:32] Speaker A: That'd be Travis Webb, not Travis Bundy. Travis Bundy did not say it at all. In fact, Travis Bundy loves history. He draws. He paints beautiful posters and draws beautiful posters about horror movie history. Like, not about, but I guess honoring. Yeah, honoring horror movie history.
Quite the opposite.
Yeah. Yeah. But we bought. We brought Jason on because.
Oh, yeah, DC has been doing a fantastic job with everything. Right now. It seems like everything they touch is fantastic. Except Superman. Red and blue. No, it wasn't red and blue. The Superman kryptonite thing, that was God awful.
The art was terrible. The story was not good.
It's like sometimes, and I get it, DC is letting some indie creators have a shot at things, which we all agree. Good, good. Yeah, good, good, good. But sometimes the result is.
Let's give it a sideways thumbs right mid.
[00:06:29] Speaker B: Mid.
[00:06:30] Speaker A: Yeah, it was not so great.
Not Dan's cup of tea for Superman, but that's okay.
But then, you know, you turn around and you let. And why am I completely blanking on his name? You let the writer of Feral go do a run on Deathstroke, and it's fantastic so far. You know, it breaks the.
[00:06:52] Speaker B: It breaks the bounds, as you will,
[00:06:56] Speaker A: and it's really good. And it, like, you know, when I'm reading comics, the first couple things I grab are, you know, Feral and Death. Well, after Legion of Superheroes, of course. Feral and Deathstroke, Tony Fleeks. Sorry, Tony, Totally blank on your name.
So some of these creators that they're bringing in, you know, have their own properties and they're doing great stuff. And then sometimes it takes a comic maybe chance to.
I'm being nice for once.
You have to warm up to it. Maybe you gotta.
It's.
[00:07:35] Speaker C: See where it's going.
[00:07:36] Speaker A: Yeah. We were gonna talk about Jonah Hex today, and I don't want to jump right into this book yet because I want to talk a little Jonah Hex history and why Jason loves Jonah Hex, not me. This is going to be Jason talking Jonah Hex history. I grabbed one book from 2013ish and that's 2013 right on the COVID And
[00:07:56] Speaker B: that's kind of like in the middle of stuff. Like, I mean, not even in the middle.
[00:08:00] Speaker C: Towards the end.
[00:08:01] Speaker A: That's towards the end. And that's some recent Jonah Hex with Jimmy Palmiotti. And Justin Gray writing it.
[00:08:06] Speaker C: Who are.
[00:08:08] Speaker A: I mean.
Well, for those of you that don't know, Jimmy Palmiotti is married to a very famous comic creator or partner, too. I don't know if they're married.
Are they married?
[00:08:23] Speaker C: I'm not sure. I think they've always used the term partners, so I'm not sure.
[00:08:27] Speaker A: You might. You might have heard of.
If you haven't heard of Jimmy Palmiani, you've definitely heard of Amanda Connor.
[00:08:33] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:08:34] Speaker B: What's really weird is us talking about doing this about. About anything.
They just filled my feed
[00:08:44] Speaker A: because they're fantastic.
[00:08:45] Speaker B: Yeah, no, which is great. Which is great. But. But they filled my feed this week.
[00:08:51] Speaker C: Fantastic.
[00:08:52] Speaker A: And Jimmy Palmiotti tends. He does things with Amanda. He. So he did. Obviously they're famous for doing Harlequin together, but also, you know, they.
Jimmy tends to like to do creator owned stuff or grab more obscure characters and then build on them. They did that JSA whistling skull thing, which was all about whistling Skull, not about the JSA at all.
[00:09:17] Speaker B: Right, right.
[00:09:19] Speaker A: He did. He got a hold of Jonah Hex and I thought took it in a kind of interesting direction until DC Editorial became Jonah Hex's biggest enemy.
[00:09:31] Speaker C: They always have been.
[00:09:33] Speaker A: It's kind of like, why?
Why?
So tell us a little bit about where Jonah Hex came from.
[00:09:41] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:09:41] Speaker A: And because this is kind of like doing a Blue Beetle podcast.
[00:09:44] Speaker B: Where do you come from?
[00:09:45] Speaker A: Way back when we started. Yeah, way, way, way, way back when we started this podcast around issue, around episode 247.
We were talking about, like, all the different iterations of Blue Beetle, which is insane because you're going back into the 40s, right?
[00:09:59] Speaker B: Wild.
[00:10:00] Speaker C: Yeah. So. So for me, just first off, how do you get into Jonah Hex at all?
Mine was an interesting way. It wasn't something I picked up off a spinner rack or anything. It was.
I was probably in middle school, so dating myself, early 90s.
Very, very early 90s.
And my uncle's brother passed away.
And so when he went to go clean out his stuff and I think he was like, Arizona or something, and I'm over here in North Carolina. He came back and he had a short box of comics.
And I'm like, oh, okay.
You know, he knew I liked comics, so he just like gave it to me. Like, hey, you know, I found these comics, you know, and gave them to me. So I'm going through them and some of the things I recognized, like there was first appearance of Black Cat in there. I'm like, oh, you know, that's cool. There was a Vampirella that my Vampirella number one that my very conservative mom found and it disappeared.
Yeah, of course, mom, you know what I've been worth today?
But there was the first like 12 issues of Jonah Hex, the, you know, the original 70s run.
And like, this is the time, like when I would say Wolverine's hitting his peak as the anti hero. Punishers hitting their peak as the anti hero. But then I start reading Jonah Hex and I'm like, dude, this guy's awesome. And from then I just, you know, would anytime I find.
Find them in dollar bins and stuff, which cannot do anymore. But, you know, I'd pick up Jonah Hex issues and read it.
And I just loved the.
The history there of a Confederate soldier who realized he was on the wrong side of history, giving up that side of things and then, you know, really becoming a nomad. Like, nobody really wanted them. No matter when things started looking good, eventually the people around him turned on him all the way to, like we said, D.C. editorial. And, you know, and I just drawn to the character and, you know, been a fan of it ever since, you know, went opening weekend to see the movie and that. You're talking about art wasted on good writing.
That was casting wasted.
[00:12:43] Speaker B: Yep. He didn't like Josh Brolin.
[00:12:45] Speaker C: No, I love Josh Brolin was fantastic. Yeah. I mean, he made a great Jonah Hex. And you know, and even, you know, the.
For the role she is playing. I think Megan Fox was fine for that role.
And then Turnbull, let's see. You know, all the casting was great. It's just.
And it's again, it's something that we'll talk about with this issue.
They added things to Jonah Hex that didn't need to be added.
[00:13:13] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:13:13] Speaker A: You mean in the movie about Jonah Hex, they should tell a Jonah Hex story?
[00:13:18] Speaker C: Exactly, exactly.
My dream would be, oh, his name's escaping me, the guy who directed Logan.
Oh, and 310 to.
[00:13:34] Speaker B: Oh, 310 to Yuma.
[00:13:35] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah.
Oh, shoot.
Like, that's who you need to write and direct a Jonah Hex story properly, you know.
And, and will we ever get it?
Probably not.
[00:13:50] Speaker B: But that would be a banger right there.
[00:13:52] Speaker C: I mean, 100%. Because you could almost see like the bones of a good Jonah Hex story in the, in the Logan story.
[00:14:04] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:04] Speaker C: You know, it's that lone wolf type situation. And, and even, you know, we'll get into it here. Even here you got some lone wolf and cub type possibility coming up with you Know, who knows what's going to happen with this issue. But, you know, you see this person, though, who has essentially been jaded by everybody. Everyone in his family's either died on them. You know, he. I mean, he has a son named Jason in comics, and, you know, they ended up having to fight. And, you know, it's just this guy who, no matter what he does, he really can't win. But he the best gunfighter around and, you know, just fell in love with the character.
[00:14:49] Speaker A: So one bad thing seemed to always happen to Jonah Hex.
[00:14:52] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:14:53] Speaker A: He's been so Going back a little bit. So he makes his first appearance in. Well, it's a house ad, but he. I guess either way, they're going to call it All Star Western or Weird Western Tales, because I know changed titles back in the 70s, right?
[00:15:06] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:15:06] Speaker A: Yeah. And then he gets his own series, and then he gets.
So I want to go way back, though. Oh, we're going to go way back to the 40s.
[00:15:16] Speaker B: Oh, going way back, folks.
[00:15:18] Speaker A: While famously, famously. Roy Thomas once quipped, I was really upset when I was expecting All Star Comics to show up. And All Star Western showed up in my mailbox.
So. As in the. In the. In the 50s, when superhero comics are. In the late 40s, early 50s, when superhero comics were no longer in vogue, they started changing some of the titles and changing them into crime comics or horror comics or western comics, and All Star Comics changes overnight to All Star Western.
And so you start getting western stories. So in the 70s, there's like this. DC is going back and trying to revive all these properties. In 72, they start losing to Marvel. Right. Spider man starts out selling Superman.
They start expanding their line. Of course, we've talked about the contraction of the line in late 70s on the podcast before. Not talking about that right now, but Hex was definitely a victim of that.
Jonah Hex. Jonah Hex's comic was a victim of that. Even though it made it. I think. Didn't it almost make it almost 100 issues?
[00:16:25] Speaker C: Yeah.
See, I think the original run ended in the 90s, I think 92 issues.
[00:16:35] Speaker A: Yeah. So, I mean, that's a good run for any comic.
[00:16:38] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:16:38] Speaker A: But with the D.C. implosion, they lost a lot of different titles.
You have. It's. So they were trying to do a couple of things in the 70s, and they were trying to capitalize on these properties they had in the 40s and 50s. Right. So they're trying to capitalize on All Star Western. They're trying to. Of course, the war comics were still going. So. But they brought on Qbert, stayed on still drawing them. Right.
And so they still had those were still going.
They had. Or Qbert was at least drawing him again if he took a break. But he's back.
That's when they brought back Captain Marvel, known by a different name that starts with an S due to stupid copyright things.
[00:17:28] Speaker B: Oh, Dan.
[00:17:29] Speaker A: And even on the tv, you know, you had like the Shazam ISIS Power Hour. And you know, they were trying to take these properties and get some. Rally around them. Right. Like, and get something. They did a Freedom Fighters book for a while, which was the alternate universe book of the heroes that were on an Earth where the Nazis won World War II.
And then you definitely should take them out of that universe and put them. And when you're writing a book about them, don't write in that universe. You should definitely put them in 1970s New York.
It's always good to take these characters that are in this universe and you expect them to be interacting with this thing and then just put them somewhere else.
[00:18:16] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:18:17] Speaker A: And that was way before crisis smashed everybody together. So everybody just showed up on the same, you know, in the same continuity.
So they tried it. But to their credit, of course, the. As Greg knows, my favorite book from that era, the Karate Kid book. Oh, fantastic.
[00:18:33] Speaker C: Good.
[00:18:34] Speaker A: So, David Michelinie, I hate you. And then you did that awesome Iron man story and then we liked you.
But then later you wrote Legion Science Police, which is a should be burned.
I don't really recommend book burning most of the time, but is it that bad, though? Oh, yeah.
[00:18:53] Speaker C: Freedom Fighters might come after you.
[00:18:55] Speaker A: Yeah, well, they might. Yeah. You know, it was really that bad of.
I was actually listening to the Legion of Substitute Podcasters and they were reviewing it recently because that's where they're at in their history of reviewing books. And they were talking about the. The top 10 least selling legion books. And the Legion lost at the end of the new 52 run at the. You know, was that we're at the top. But those Legion Science Police issues were right in the top 10. And those were still in the 90s. Right.
So those should not be anywhere near a top 10 worst sales.
[00:19:31] Speaker B: It should be up.
[00:19:32] Speaker A: Yeah. You know, if you're looking at top 10 worst sales, it's almost always a 2000s book or 2010s book. Right. When the print runs go down and just because the print one runs went right down. So, yeah, that's.
Yeah, it was really bad anyway not to. Not to pick on a. Not. Not to Grind an axe against a famous comic book writer, though,
[00:19:56] Speaker B: who's Dan.
[00:19:56] Speaker A: Never does, even in a bottle. Right. So one of the, you know, like. But with Hex, we get this run and Hex introduces a lot of characters. Right. Jason. But it's. It's kind. Would we call it kind of a serial?
[00:20:12] Speaker C: Yeah, definitely will be a serial. Yeah.
And. And to go back to the history of it, too, at this time, too, you. You forgot that DC was bringing in all the Filipino artists.
So this was part of the influx of Filipino artists that came in, and Tony De Zungo was essentially kind of the pioneer of that. Um, and so you. You really started to see, you know, that change there, too. So there was a lot of things that kind of converged right at this moment for the, you know, weird. I mean, All Star Western, which I think two issues after that became Weird Western Tales, and then he got his own run.
But. Yeah, but it was definitely a serial.
You know, it was.
It did. It did great storytelling.
And, you know, even back to the.
The first house ad, I mean, you know, which appeared in Batman 237, which was, you know, in chasing down my. All issues of Jonah Hex Appearances was surprisingly a difficult one to find at a decent price because it has a Neil Adams cover. And I'm like, I don't want it for the COVID I want it for the inside.
[00:21:38] Speaker A: So, I mean, you'll take the Neal Adams cover.
[00:21:41] Speaker C: Yeah, no, no, no. Yeah, yeah. And I do. I do have the Neil Adams cover, but I did actually find one that didn't have a cover on ebay for, like, two bucks.
So I could just display the house at.
But.
[00:21:57] Speaker A: But.
[00:21:57] Speaker C: Yeah, no, and you also have to. Until we got his own book. You know, there was a rotating cast in All Star Western. So, you know, you also had, you know, your scalp hunter who would show up and. And a number of other backlash. Backlash would come up. And I, you know, those. I appreciated those. Jonah Hex was the Western character I stuck with.
[00:22:26] Speaker A: So, yeah, there's. I mean, these Tony Dzinga covers are fantastic.
[00:22:34] Speaker C: Some of the most underrated are in the DC catalog.
[00:22:39] Speaker A: This is on the DC Wiki. So it's not going to be the. The best.
The biggest one screen. But, like, that is just creepy right there.
[00:22:51] Speaker B: I know I got some of that stuff in my long box.
[00:22:56] Speaker A: Yeah, there's. And like you said, it was a rotating cast. There's Jonah Hex on another one.
But you also get El Diablo, too, right?
[00:23:08] Speaker C: Yes, El Diablo was in there.
[00:23:11] Speaker A: Who gets a series later, right? They modernize that character in the 80s again, modernized from the 70s to the 80s.
[00:23:18] Speaker C: Right.
[00:23:19] Speaker A: Yeah, it's. They. And a lot of these characters, you know, show up. They play a big part in crisis.
So Hex gets. So you have this series. Hex gets his own series.
Then you have the implosion. You lose the Hex title. Jonah Hex title. I keep saying Hex. It's like a.
So then in crisis, Jonah Hex splatlash.
A few of the other western characters are fighting the shadow demons and panels and.
And then a Hex, like, disappears.
[00:23:52] Speaker C: Yeah, he disappears for a little while.
Canonically, I think they count it as once he's in his 40s and he goes off to the far future to hex. Just text. No, Jonah going with one of those one name type, you know, one names like Madonna and not.
[00:24:17] Speaker A: It's not the 90s, so it's not Hex X, E H E, XX.
[00:24:22] Speaker B: That'd be hot.
[00:24:24] Speaker C: So.
[00:24:25] Speaker A: But titles ever.
[00:24:26] Speaker C: Right.
But it was he.
I think technically it's the 21st 1st century that might actually be mentioned that he's in at that point.
Picks up learning how to ride a motorcycle incredibly well for cowboy from the 1800s.
But yeah, he ends up in essentially a post apocalyptic Mad Max style world.
And it's every. They took a western and made it a Mad Max sci fi book.
[00:25:09] Speaker A: Yeah. And you got early Mark Teixeira art. Right.
[00:25:13] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:25:14] Speaker A: On it. Which is. And it's. It's got a very. The first cover has a very. If I can pull it up here, has a very, I would say, Buck Rogers vibe to the costume.
[00:25:26] Speaker C: Oh, yes, 100%.
[00:25:28] Speaker A: Which was definitely out on TV at the time.
[00:25:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:25:31] Speaker A: So you can. You can see it there.
[00:25:33] Speaker C: And look at those shoulder pads. Are glorious.
[00:25:36] Speaker B: They are.
[00:25:38] Speaker A: And the elite. And of course, you know, I have to note that the Legion of Superheroes, at least one character appeared in the series in a time bubble for like one panel.
[00:25:48] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:25:49] Speaker A: Right. And Hex looked up at them like, what are you doing here? And then why they disappear?
Well, they were illustrating that the time was going crazy. And so that was. It was in that. It was in that. It was in those books we were reading, actually. The Death of Superboy books.
[00:26:05] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:06] Speaker A: Is in that time period, Greg.
So, yeah, I mean, these are.
These are great books.
[00:26:16] Speaker B: The Hex. Yeah.
[00:26:17] Speaker A: No, but they. But they. They weren't consistent. Is that a fair statement?
[00:26:22] Speaker C: They weren't.
And. And, you know, he. He made it back to his time period.
And what's interesting is this is where we get before we have the run in the 2000s, we have the Vertigo years that show up.
And what we're going to review today feels very much more like the Vertigo years than it does any of the other sections of. Of Jonah Hex.
[00:27:02] Speaker B: That's a fair assessment.
[00:27:05] Speaker C: And with. I think there was three Jonah Hex stories in the Vertigo years, and I think they even made a motion comic of one of them.
But it was the.
Let's see, two. I think Two Gun Mojo is probably the most famous of those.
Then you had the one that they got sued over because they stole the names of two. Two singers.
[00:27:42] Speaker A: Oh.
[00:27:43] Speaker C: And used them as characters.
And it was a pretty big lawsuit about it. And.
But the court upheld DC's right to use it as parody.
[00:27:58] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:27:59] Speaker C: And so it was actually somewhat of landmark case, but I think it was the Autumn Brothers are the ones that were. And. And that book was essentially Jonah Hex dealing with almost Cthulhu, like, being, you know, is very Lovecraftian.
So. And the Two Gun mojo is essentially adding a supernatural element of, you know, things coming back from the dead, you know, those kind of things which you would get sprinkled in into the old Jonah Hex.
But a lot of the old Jonah Hex stuff was very much relationship driven, interaction driven, honor, you know, and stuff like that.
But the supernatural side came in with the Vertigo series, which, you know, Vertigo. Vertigo really kind of messed up a couple of my favorite DC characters at the time because, you know, and I've mentioned. I know I've mentioned Dan before that, you know, I grew up going on reading books. I had access to Marvel. That was the spinner rack that the local stores carried. So, you know, DC books only picked up, you know, if I happen to be somewhere and see something.
So with that same box of comics, though, I got with the Johnny Hex, I got a number of action comics that was the Superman family comics.
And it had a lot of the Human Target in it.
And I really like those Human Target stories. I'm like, those are awesome.
And then the Vertigo Human Target came out, and it makes Tom King's Human Target run look like a Nick Jr. Program.
[00:30:13] Speaker A: Wow. Okay.
[00:30:15] Speaker C: I mean, it go. I mean, it's psychological horror. It's like, do I even know who I am anymore Type. And it's just, you know, like, if depression could be a comic book, I think some of those Vertigo Human Target books could.
Yeah.
But so, you know, it's one of those things where Vertigo really, you know, kind of took those chances of being just darker, more Supernatural in cases and things like that.
So you really saw that change to these secondary DC characters. I don't even know you would count Jonah Hex and Human Target as secondary at that point in the early 90s. I mean, they would maybe be tertiary at best.
So.
And then of course, in the 2000s, they. They bring them back as the gunslinger and went back to more Western style comics. So.
[00:31:16] Speaker A: Yeah. And they give. That's when Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray are writing.
And here's issue three, and I forgot it went back as far as it did. So it starts out as Jonah Hex and then later goes to All Star Western again.
And that's where Jason is saying D.C. editorial was the enemy of the book. Because for a while, D.C. editorial just leaves when they leave Justin and Jimmy alone to write the book.
[00:31:44] Speaker C: Right.
[00:31:45] Speaker A: It's fantastic. Right. And this series went quite a few issues.
[00:31:50] Speaker C: 70 issues.
[00:31:51] Speaker A: Yeah. I mean, that's a great run for a book.
[00:31:55] Speaker B: And then.
[00:31:57] Speaker A: Okay, watching this on the screen is silly. As I hit backspace, I was trying to get to the issue 70 issues. And then it goes to All Star Western, Right?
[00:32:06] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:32:08] Speaker A: And then All Star Western again. So All Star Western gets interrupted. Right.
Or did it start with All Star Western at New 52?
[00:32:16] Speaker C: Is that how it started with All Star Western? New 52? And it never wrote the Jonah story. Yep.
[00:32:21] Speaker A: Yeah. And they did this. You know, Greg's heard me whine about it lots of times too. They did the same thing with Legion. They didn't change the name of the book, but they launch a second book that nobody wanted.
[00:32:32] Speaker C: Right.
[00:32:32] Speaker B: They give you the thing that you don't want.
[00:32:35] Speaker A: They definitely give us a thing. They don't want legionnaires in the 20th century. Because that I. Again, I. I don't want.
[00:32:45] Speaker B: You don't want it, but they think you want it.
[00:32:47] Speaker A: Nobody wants it because nobody bought it. Those are the other top 10 worst selling legion books of all time.
[00:32:52] Speaker B: I bought them, Dan.
[00:32:54] Speaker A: You did not.
[00:32:56] Speaker B: I bought them all.
[00:32:57] Speaker C: So now. So now this brings us to an interesting time around. That's time. And tying it into John Hex, you have the return of Bruce Wayne. Yeah. So how do you feel about Bruce Wayne in different time periods?
[00:33:10] Speaker A: And here's one of the All Star Western books that's not. I didn't pull up. You can get a better scan on with Vandal Savage. So they started well, this. In All Star, they incorporate Alan Wayne. Right. So you get Wayne history, you start tying it more into the universe.
Vandal Savage shows up, you start, put you start tying just. You start tying Jimmy Palmiotti's hands behind his back.
[00:33:38] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:33:39] Speaker A: And forcing him to integrate more and more things into a line of books that was holistically one of the worst periods for dc.
There's the wonderful Superman without his red underwear because, you know, you need a Kryptonian battle suit. And we've got to redraw that Superman. Right.
Because, heck, you know, underwear is cheesy, man. We don't want to have that.
This is the new 52. You know, the Superman that was so terrible they killed him in the book and brought the other Superman back.
Yeah, yeah. Just as a reminder for how great that run went.
[00:34:20] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:21] Speaker A: For the company.
So yay, good news. They're doing much better now. Now we have ev. Batman, however, Batman, we have. You know, while we're ready next week, right, Greg?
[00:34:37] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:34:38] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[00:34:39] Speaker A: Absolute Batman number six. It's right here for us.
[00:34:41] Speaker B: Right there. Ready.
[00:34:42] Speaker A: Ready to go. And they have been hit after hit of launching new books. And we mentioned that Legion got a second printing.
We mentioned that Doom Patrol got a second printing. Yeah, we mentioned that Teen Titans got a second printing. And we're gonna review a book that is not going to get a second printing tonight.
[00:35:02] Speaker C: You don't. You don't think it will?
[00:35:04] Speaker A: Well, maybe if they just don't print a lot.
[00:35:06] Speaker B: I mean, I would hope it would. I mean, I hope it doesn't get the Hexagonahex.
[00:35:11] Speaker C: I will say that my comic shop did sell out.
[00:35:14] Speaker A: Oh, good.
So maybe just because they didn't order a lot.
[00:35:20] Speaker C: I think he. I think 35 was the numbers that he.
[00:35:24] Speaker B: Oh, damn. Okay, that's pretty good then. Yeah. Then that.
[00:35:27] Speaker A: Wait, what city is your comic shop in?
[00:35:29] Speaker C: Greensboron.
[00:35:30] Speaker B: That's a pretty good city, Dan.
[00:35:32] Speaker C: It is.
[00:35:32] Speaker A: That's a decent sized city.
[00:35:34] Speaker B: That's a decent sized city. That's like me going to. That's like me going to our. The My local comic shop and asking for the book which is unavailable and had to.
[00:35:43] Speaker A: I had to. Well, they probably ordered three of them, so.
[00:35:46] Speaker B: They did. No, I'm pretty sure they ordered more.
[00:35:49] Speaker C: Well, well, you know, honestly, it's one that wasn't promoted well because even though with the all or next level. I'm sorry, we're past all in now. We're next level.
With all the next level advertisement that DC's been doing.
You've just seen the name Jonah Hex.
But like with Legion, you got some preview pages, you know, with some of the other ones got some preview pages, but with Jonah Hex. It's like I didn't find out really much of anything about it till maybe a week before it came out.
[00:36:24] Speaker A: Well, first off, I mean, first off, number one, everything should be featuring the legion of superheroes. So, as you're aware, like, the advertising, of course, I mean, you take your premiere team.
[00:36:37] Speaker C: Right, Right.
[00:36:38] Speaker A: Oh, and you feature them extensively. Right.
[00:36:41] Speaker B: Because now you will also, though.
[00:36:46] Speaker A: Also though, it's Joshua Williamson's pet project. Right, Right. Like, are you going to make Mr. Walsh happy, who wrote this book, or are you going to make Josh Williamson happy for his pet project in your advertising?
[00:36:59] Speaker C: No, I might would say that GI Joe's his pet project, but, you know, we can agree to disagree there.
[00:37:05] Speaker A: Well, maybe they're both his pet project at this point. Yeah.
[00:37:08] Speaker C: He's got a couple of pets, huh?
[00:37:09] Speaker B: He's got a couple of pets, man. It's like having a cat and a dog. Which one do you love more? You love them both.
[00:37:14] Speaker C: Now, he. He's having a heck of a year, that's for sure.
[00:37:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:37:18] Speaker A: And it's funny because he's one of those creators that will never win the Eisner yet. I look at the collection of writing right now, and I'm like, it's bridal. Yeah, it's just, like, because he's more. I mean, he's. I don't want to call him pedestrian, almost sounds insulting, but other people find him that way.
[00:37:39] Speaker B: Other people find him that way. But when you read the stuff that he's doing, it's actually really, really good. And it's. And. And I think the. The problem is that other people out there don't want to give credit to somebody that's making something that in the past, it seems so pedestrian.
[00:37:59] Speaker A: I don't want to insult him, but, I mean, is he. Is he kind of like, is. Right now I feel like I'm insulting the poor man. But is he kind of like early career Matt Damon. Like every movie Matt Damon was in was nominated for Academy Awards. Right.
Or, you know, was like a top, you know, 90s.
It was 90s on rotten tomatoes. Right?
[00:38:22] Speaker B: That was.
[00:38:22] Speaker C: Right. Yeah.
[00:38:23] Speaker A: All the films he was in were in the 90s on rotten tomatoes, but Matt Damon wasn't winning anything. And you're like, oh, he's obviously really good because he's these things.
[00:38:33] Speaker B: He's in everything.
[00:38:34] Speaker A: Why now? Maybe later in his career, it showed that maybe he wasn't as good as we thought he was.
[00:38:40] Speaker B: I think he's still. I think he's still as good as we thought he was.
[00:38:43] Speaker A: Or maybe he's just taking roles and advertising crypto, but
[00:38:50] Speaker B: I think he's. He's advertising crypto and taking roles.
[00:38:53] Speaker A: Dan, look, in honor of Jonah Hex, I'm having this nice old fashioned today. Actually hadn't so and, but so he'd probably get a rope for me if I'm having a Manhattan.
[00:39:04] Speaker C: Right.
[00:39:04] Speaker A: Fashion. But I say the more of this. This Manhattan I have, the more I will attack Matt Damon.
[00:39:12] Speaker B: Matt Damon is amazing, Dan.
[00:39:15] Speaker A: Matt Damon park movie.
[00:39:18] Speaker C: I will say it will be interesting to see how he holds up down the road with his comic sets coming out now because, you know, you use the comparison to Matt Damon and my daughter who is turning 15 tomorrow of the. Of the day. We're recording this.
She went and watched Goodwill hunting this past weekend for the first time. Never seen.
[00:39:43] Speaker B: Oh, my gosh.
[00:39:44] Speaker C: And she's kind of like.
She's kind of like, it's all right. But I don't like Matt Damon in it. He's kind of a jerk.
[00:39:52] Speaker B: Oh, wow.
[00:39:53] Speaker C: And I'm kind of like I said, why is he a drink? Well, he's from Boston. That's just. That's just Boston. And he's the underdog and he's just got to be scrappy and he's like, no, I don't like it.
[00:40:06] Speaker A: So are you implying. Are you implying that. That Joshua. As Joshua Williamson gets further on in his career, he could end up like Greg's favorite author, Robert Kirkman.
[00:40:18] Speaker B: Oh, wow, Dan. Why would you put that on me?
I would.
[00:40:22] Speaker C: I mean, maybe, though, I mean, I will say Kirkman's won me back a little bit here with the Transformers Run east one.
[00:40:33] Speaker A: Yeah. But he does not win me back with any of his social media commentary.
[00:40:36] Speaker C: Well, I try to stay away from that just an.
Yeah, no, no, I get that.
[00:40:42] Speaker B: Slow focus on the.
[00:40:44] Speaker A: I mean, it's okay. You can be a good writer and be an asshole, right?
[00:40:47] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:40:47] Speaker A: Write good enough stuff.
[00:40:50] Speaker C: Alan Moore.
Yeah.
[00:40:52] Speaker A: If. As long as you're not. As long as you don't support the orange president and you are an asshole, I'm probably. I could still read your stuff, right? You know, this is what I. When I ran college debate teams. This is what. And Greg's well aware of, this was one. But this is what I used to tell my team members when they joined the team. I was like, if. If you're really good at this and you're a great person and a great team member, you're always welcome.
If you're a great team member and you're kind of average at this. You're always welcome. If you're great at this, but you're an asshole, you might be welcome. And if you're bad at this and you're an asshole, you're never welcome. Gotcha. Right. And so, you know, I might read some stuff by somebody who's jerk that I don't like. But at the same time it's much more fun when you say, I mean, this was years ago, but I walked up to Jimmy Palmiani and Amanda Connor with my nephews in New Orleans and said hello. And I said, I just want to introduce my nephew to you.
He's just getting into comics, you know, what would you have him read? And they sat and talked to him.
[00:41:53] Speaker C: Oh, wow, that's awesome.
[00:41:55] Speaker A: And you know, this is, you know, those are the kind of folks that are fun to interact with.
[00:42:00] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:42:01] Speaker A: And you're engaging and I don't like everything Jimmy writes. In fact, I have one of his Kickstarters that I thought was a little weird.
It's fine, but it's.
I think it's killing time in America.
[00:42:18] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:42:19] Speaker A: I don't know if you, either of you read that. Greg, Greg, I should hand that to you to read just to give you a.
[00:42:24] Speaker B: You can give me it over. Let me read it. I haven't read it, but I mean, I've had experiences with him and I know I, I share the same type of thing. Like, I mean, very, very friendly, very nice.
[00:42:36] Speaker A: And we're still avoiding this book, so we should probably talk about it.
[00:42:39] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:42:40] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:42:41] Speaker B: So are we not all in on this?
[00:42:43] Speaker A: Is that the problem?
Well, okay, my other, my other issue with. The only other thing I would say we're in the shadow right now is why do they have to match all of AEW pay per view titles with every initiative they release? Like all in next level.
[00:43:00] Speaker B: Like we're all in on the next level.
[00:43:04] Speaker A: Why are we matching?
[00:43:06] Speaker C: It's that synergy.
[00:43:08] Speaker A: And also, you know, Jonah Hex or Cassidy. And also like, look, I'd love to see you.
Is, is. Excuse me.
[00:43:19] Speaker B: Did you.
[00:43:21] Speaker A: I had to put down the comic when you mentioned the orange.
[00:43:28] Speaker C: What? What? What orange? Cassidy.
[00:43:30] Speaker A: Yes. I hate that guy so much.
[00:43:34] Speaker C: Oh, why not?
[00:43:35] Speaker A: He is so. His gimmick is so played out.
Like, I am so tired of it. Like, yes, it was funny the first couple times and then now it's just stupid for him to sit with his hands in his pockets and for me to believe that he can beat anybody up.
[00:43:53] Speaker C: I mean, but he also danced with Tony Storm, so I Mean, that was timeless.
[00:43:57] Speaker B: Timeless.
Geez, Dan. I mean, you have to suspend your disbelief for a moment.
[00:44:04] Speaker A: He doesn't allow you to suspend your disbelief. That's the point.
I will suspend my disbelief. I'll believe the guy that looks like a. Looks like a beaten down plumber can choke somebody out in the middle of the ring, but I can't Jon Moxley, if you don't know who I'm talking.
[00:44:21] Speaker C: Yeah, I thought you're talking about Dusty Rhodes.
[00:44:24] Speaker B: Dusty Rhodes, Tom Moxley. Same, same, same.
[00:44:28] Speaker A: You make John Moxley at this point, looks like he could just be your next door neighbor who's a plumber who's coming home from work. But I can believe that he like learned some jiu jitsu or something and choked somebody out. Right?
[00:44:38] Speaker B: I mean, but that's like saying that you believe that the. That the outrunners are terrible all the time.
[00:44:44] Speaker A: Okay, look, one, you're the big fan of the outrunners.
[00:44:47] Speaker B: I know I am, but. And they're not terrible all the time.
[00:44:51] Speaker A: But here's the thing with AEW right now. As long as I'm getting sidetracked, because that was the average. You know what? Now it's a good time to open the book, because look who they advertise. It's their centerpiece right now in 2019, 2026 in October. MJF is the front, and he's nowhere near the top of the card in aew.
Your average. This is the advertisement. You can see it right here.
[00:45:15] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:45:16] Speaker A: This is October 2026. And the people they are featuring are not the people that they are featuring on their show. Which is idiotic, it's true.
[00:45:25] Speaker B: But he should be, because he's mjf and he's.
[00:45:28] Speaker A: He should be correct. MJF should be in the front of all of the shows.
I don't need. I don't need the plumber. I don't need hands in pockets guy. I need the best person on the show. On the show.
[00:45:42] Speaker B: I know who you need. You need the call up from the other show.
No, you don't want him.
[00:45:52] Speaker A: I want Danhausen back.
Everybody wants Danhausen.
[00:45:58] Speaker B: Everybody wants Danhausen, but he's not coming back to the.
[00:46:03] Speaker A: By the way, I know we're not supposed to watch the other wrestling, according to one Mr. Tanner, because he has decreed that you're not allowed to watch wwe.
[00:46:11] Speaker C: Oh, can't watch the Fed.
[00:46:12] Speaker A: Yeah, you can't watch it because anybody watching at this time has abandoned all morals and.
[00:46:17] Speaker B: Well, I mean, I don't watch it just because I Mean, I'm a good human, but.
[00:46:22] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly. I mean, even though like it's completely cross political and Ari Manuel is the president and that's the brother of Rahm Emanuel. And so now you're crossing political lines and now you're establishing all these things.
And clearly they're just all corrupt assholes. But, but because I. I literally can't watch anything at this point, right? Like, what am I to do? Like watch CBS's On My sky dance now? Like they're pieces of I, you know, like I. But anyway, anyway, YouTube, everything's great on YouTube.
[00:46:53] Speaker B: Yeah, everything.
[00:46:54] Speaker A: Everything is great on YouTube, right?
[00:46:56] Speaker B: Don't. Don't even do that, guys. You just, you just go find some quick 30 second reel that somebody did.
They're unknown.
[00:47:05] Speaker C: Well, I get all my entertainment from vine, so it's all good.
[00:47:09] Speaker A: Oh, but they did do a cool thing on Live Journal.
[00:47:12] Speaker B: You guys want to subscribe to it?
[00:47:15] Speaker A: I was gonna make a point, okay. They had Danhausen fight Gunther and instead of making it competitive or anything like that.
[00:47:22] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:47:22] Speaker A: Dan Housing got halfway through the ur and Gunther just lift him up and like killed him.
And I was like, brilliant.
That's how you take somebody like Orange fucking Cassidy and employ them, right? When you have a big baddie, you don't make the match competitive, Right.
You just destroy the opening match. He can be Johnny be bad with the glitter gun on every pay per view through the 90s. Opening the match and then going to be marvelous Mark Miro and then Reena Miro becomes the most famous one. That didn't work in WWE or wwf, but it worked in wcw, right? Everybody loved the Johnny B. Bad opening match. I'm okay with the Orange Cassidy opening match as long as it is what it is. But when you make him competitive with people, it is stupid.
[00:48:08] Speaker B: So you have him come out and then you have.
And who would you match him up against?
[00:48:15] Speaker A: The outrunners you have.
[00:48:17] Speaker B: Oh, he just. He go fight. He fights the outrunners.
[00:48:20] Speaker A: He could be matched up with.
Why, why am I blanking with the guy with the boys who I love?
[00:48:29] Speaker B: The guy with the boys he loves.
[00:48:32] Speaker A: Not that I would. No, not. I don't love those boys.
The guy with the peacock feathers.
[00:48:39] Speaker B: Oh, what you're talking about.
But he.
[00:48:42] Speaker A: I.
Oh, why are we blanking on his name? He's awesome. That's the kind of person you put with. Or Dalton Castle. Don Cassidy of person you put with Orange Cassidy. Right? Like. Yeah.
[00:48:52] Speaker B: I mean, because that is a nice turn right there. That is a nice turn because he was with them. And then you put them together.
[00:48:58] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:48:59] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:48:59] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:49:00] Speaker A: Rest in peace, Pac. The minute you put Pac wrestling Orange Cassidy, it's stupid, because Pac had intensity.
He has awesome moves. And the story is cool when he's out there and he can tell a story in a match. And then when he has to stop everything he's doing to deal with Hands in Pockets Guy and do the little baby kicks and all that bullshit, it's dumb. It's not fun. It, like, takes somebody who's really cool and, like, neuters them in the match.
[00:49:26] Speaker B: I hate it.
[00:49:27] Speaker A: I hate it a lot.
Yeah, a lot. Anyway, I don't know if I think we have to talk about something I hate more than this book.
[00:49:37] Speaker C: Well, well. So it's funny going back to the book, your advertisement and the physical copy is, you know, this a great AEW ad.
In the digital copy I have, they actually do have an ad behind, you know, the. The COVID technically.
And the ad for us is the DC Go promotion for Runway to Ruin.
[00:50:04] Speaker A: R U I N Interesting.
[00:50:07] Speaker C: It's a crossover between, like, Harley Quinn, Nothing But Nightwing.
[00:50:13] Speaker B: B U TT Nothing But Nightwing.
[00:50:17] Speaker C: You know, John Kent, the Magical Mysteries of Shazam. And Warriors.
[00:50:22] Speaker A: Nothing But Nightwing. I'm gonna have to get that book.
[00:50:24] Speaker B: Nothing But Nightwing.
[00:50:26] Speaker C: Nightwing.
And it has a peach. It has a peach in the background. It's great.
[00:50:31] Speaker A: Fantastic. But grab it.
[00:50:34] Speaker C: But I looked at it and said, Runway to Ruin. And, like, is this a precursor to what this story is going to be?
[00:50:41] Speaker B: Oh, snap.
[00:50:43] Speaker C: Oh.
[00:50:44] Speaker A: Oh. There they were giving. Well, we should get this thing started. We're not going to go totally page by page on this thing, but I want to, though. Dan, I love the.
Well, we may not have time to go page by page, but. What are you talking about?
[00:50:59] Speaker B: We waited 50 minutes to get to the content.
[00:51:03] Speaker A: We were talking. We've been talking Jonah Hex for, like, a lot of Jonah.
[00:51:07] Speaker B: I know, I know.
[00:51:08] Speaker A: We've been touring to Back Matter, by the way. By the way. Aew.
[00:51:14] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:51:15] Speaker B: Geez.
[00:51:16] Speaker A: I may not like Orange Cassidy the way you use him, but Greg and I did appreciate the fact that we got really cool seats to see your show when you were in Washington. So I just want to say that again, thank you for dropping by the Retro Emporium and dropping off those tickets for us, and we had a fantastic time at the show.
[00:51:35] Speaker B: We'll come back and support anytime you want us to.
[00:51:37] Speaker A: We'll come back. Especially if MJF is there. We'll come back.
[00:51:40] Speaker B: Dan. Dan will be Their front and center. And.
[00:51:43] Speaker A: And if Anthony Bowens is there. Anthony Fearing, Kent Washington.
We could hang out. We could have a drink afterwards. Be fine.
[00:51:54] Speaker B: Yeah. Or before.
[00:51:56] Speaker A: Right.
[00:51:58] Speaker C: Daring.
[00:51:58] Speaker A: You know, Phil, I still love you. Next time I'm in New York. But Anthony, too. You know, we could. It'd be fine. We could. We could. We could. We go to the gym?
[00:52:08] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:52:09] Speaker A: Be fantastic.
Yeah.
So it's.
Yeah. I mean, you know, he's a nice guy.
And he doesn't like Toni Storm.
[00:52:21] Speaker B: That's right.
[00:52:23] Speaker A: Well, he might like Toni Storm, but he doesn't like Toni Storm, you know.
[00:52:26] Speaker C: Fair. Yeah.
[00:52:27] Speaker B: Fair.
[00:52:27] Speaker C: Right. Yeah.
[00:52:30] Speaker A: By the way, okay, you know, I said I was gonna get in this comic book. Did you hear about the Max Caster controversy?
[00:52:36] Speaker C: No.
What was that?
[00:52:38] Speaker A: So tna. Right. So I don't know if he just ever. He just pisses everybody off a lot because that. That. That. That tag team was great with him doing the raps and everything.
[00:52:47] Speaker C: Oh, the.
The one guy.
[00:52:50] Speaker A: He was. Yeah. He was in TNA for, like, less than four hours. Yep. He did a rap about dropping bombs in Riyadh, and then they fired him.
[00:52:58] Speaker C: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:52:59] Speaker A: And then he's like, I'm not apologizing for this. Like, I'm a bad guy.
And I'm like, I agree.
If you watch pro wrestling and you're mad at what the heels say, they're doing it right.
Congratulations. Like, do you think that Max Castor, the Human is like, I love that people died in Riyadh.
But then they're like, that crossed the line. I'm like, what?
[00:53:28] Speaker C: Yep. What?
[00:53:30] Speaker A: What?
How. How are you supposed to make anybody mad at you?
[00:53:35] Speaker C: Yeah.
Yeah.
[00:53:38] Speaker A: Anyway. Okay. They cannot separate. See, so maybe pro wrestling is realer than it's ever been because they can't separate the characters from their actual pro promo.
[00:53:48] Speaker B: They can't. Yeah.
[00:53:51] Speaker A: Well, anyway, Jonah Hex, we've got.
[00:53:54] Speaker B: He's so good, too.
Gosh.
[00:53:57] Speaker A: I know, but they. I mean, he must make people mad because. Aw. Got rid of him. And then TNA's already fired him, so. And he's not going to WWE because they're not going to let him do his stick.
[00:54:06] Speaker B: I know, but he's so good, though.
[00:54:08] Speaker A: He's great.
[00:54:09] Speaker B: He's great. That's why people don't like him.
[00:54:12] Speaker A: The tag team was great, and they got to be world champions, and they immediately just.
DC editorial them right out of the title.
[00:54:19] Speaker B: Boom. Out of here. You're done. Go away.
[00:54:23] Speaker A: All right. So. Off of wrestling.
So I thought we had a neat start to this book, actually. I Like the start of this book.
[00:54:31] Speaker B: This is pretty cool.
[00:54:33] Speaker A: We've got a gang of bandits and a new bandit.
[00:54:37] Speaker B: And what do you call young bandit?
[00:54:41] Speaker A: A rookie.
[00:54:42] Speaker B: Oh, a rookie.
[00:54:44] Speaker A: I don't know. What. What do you call young?
[00:54:45] Speaker B: A Nathan Fillian.
[00:54:48] Speaker A: No, he's old.
[00:54:48] Speaker C: Oh,
[00:54:53] Speaker A: Jason, just.
What do you call a young bandit?
[00:55:02] Speaker C: A young gun.
[00:55:03] Speaker A: A twink.
[00:55:04] Speaker B: Oh, a young gun.
[00:55:07] Speaker A: A young gun, too.
[00:55:10] Speaker C: Or a kid.
[00:55:11] Speaker A: Young guns, too. Way better than young guns.
[00:55:13] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:55:14] Speaker B: Hey, dude, are you sure you have to have young guns to get young guns, too?
[00:55:18] Speaker A: Yeah, because you get the Bon Jovi song in young guns too.
[00:55:21] Speaker C: Boys of Glory.
[00:55:23] Speaker B: Was that not in the first one shot? He rides a steel horse.
[00:55:28] Speaker A: Yeah. No, no, no.
[00:55:29] Speaker C: That's how you get her.
[00:55:31] Speaker A: No, no, that's the Heck series. That's the Hex series from the 80s where he.
[00:55:34] Speaker B: Yes, that is the Hex series. That's. That's why they wrote the. That's why he wrote the song. Because Hex rides a steel horse. He's a cowboy, guys.
So young guns. You don't have young guns. And you don't have young guns, too. You don't have hex in the 80s going into 20.
[00:55:51] Speaker A: We're never doing first century.
[00:55:53] Speaker B: You don't get this Hex without that song. Okay, moving on.
[00:55:57] Speaker A: We are never.
[00:55:58] Speaker C: We're.
[00:55:59] Speaker A: No. By. By the way, they did announce this is a limited series. You're only getting six issues.
[00:56:03] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:56:04] Speaker A: So didn't they expand it to eight, though? Am I wrong about that?
[00:56:08] Speaker B: Expanded?
[00:56:10] Speaker C: The West? I heard it was six. If they expanded it, it's news to me.
[00:56:16] Speaker A: So I just got a note from my comic shop asking me if I wanted to order Hyde Street.
[00:56:22] Speaker B: Order what?
[00:56:23] Speaker A: Hyde Street. It's one of the Jeff Johns books. I. I think I'm canceling it.
I'd canceled all the other Jeff Johns books a while ago. I just think they're shitty, which is unfortunate.
[00:56:39] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:56:42] Speaker A: Those are the Geoff Johns image books, by the way, for people that are keeping up on current comics.
I was out of Redcoat, like, in two issues, and people love it, so I don't know where I'm at, why I'm.
It did not hit at all.
I think I'd like a extended Jonah. I mean, basically Write a Code is Jonah Hacks. Yeah.
[00:57:07] Speaker C: I haven't read it.
[00:57:08] Speaker A: So the same concept, right?
[00:57:10] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:57:13] Speaker A: Fighting for the wrong side, right?
Yeah.
Anyway, writer on this is Michael Walsh, Pencilr Michael Walsh, anchor Michael Walsh.
[00:57:23] Speaker C: So.
[00:57:24] Speaker A: So that may be why it's only six issues, because Mr. Walsh is doing a lot of work.
[00:57:30] Speaker C: Here.
Yep.
[00:57:32] Speaker A: Tony Griffin on colors, Becca Carey on letters, editors James Reed and Brittany Holzer.
So we get.
We. It's interesting, Greg, because we get a very Junior Braves of the Apocalypse coloring
[00:57:48] Speaker B: in this book, I was gonna say, I mean, coloring wise like this. But that's what makes the book, like, pop and stand out, because the story, you know, you're telling a story in the Old west, you feel
[00:58:04] Speaker C: you want
[00:58:04] Speaker B: something that's kind of that. That rough, monochrome, monotone.
[00:58:11] Speaker A: I don't know why I put this old book away. I was gonna make a point.
[00:58:15] Speaker B: Oh, is it make a point?
[00:58:17] Speaker A: Well, no, I was just going to say. So I feel like colors did a great job.
I think the colors pop a little bit more in this book. So this is the 2013 book.
[00:58:27] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:58:29] Speaker A: But I want just. I'm going to hold it up for a second so people can see the art style that are on video, right?
[00:58:35] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:58:35] Speaker A: And then I feel like with. The art style is not way off, right?
[00:58:40] Speaker B: Yeah, similar art style.
[00:58:41] Speaker A: So if I go back to the art style here, the art style is not way off. The coloring is a lot different.
[00:58:46] Speaker B: Oh, it's. It's got a really. It's.
[00:58:48] Speaker A: It's.
[00:58:49] Speaker B: It's got a nice wash to it.
[00:58:52] Speaker C: And it.
[00:58:53] Speaker B: And it.
It's got hints of color where it needs to be in a sense of, like, you know, light.
Light stuff is lit up, you know,
[00:59:09] Speaker A: but we are dodging this story, like, now.
[00:59:12] Speaker B: Like, I mean, when they're lighting a match, the match is lit, the moon is bright, there's brightness in certain areas and stuff like that, but certain things are washed out.
[00:59:22] Speaker A: Are we going to keep talking about everything but the story? Because we'll get there. Because we all didn't like it.
[00:59:30] Speaker B: I liked it.
[00:59:32] Speaker A: You like everything I loved. You're like Mr. Peanut Butter on, you know, BoJack on toast.
[00:59:39] Speaker C: You give it to Mikey, he'll eat it.
[00:59:41] Speaker B: It's true.
[00:59:46] Speaker A: This book is. Okay, I.
I'm just gonna say before we get started, this is a I Need to Know More book, because we didn't get for far enough in the first book for me to know.
[01:00:01] Speaker C: It opens up.
[01:00:02] Speaker A: Covering the book.
[01:00:03] Speaker C: Yeah, it opens up with questions right off the bat because you get. You get. You get these new bandits.
[01:00:12] Speaker A: I'm gonna break it, Greg.
[01:00:15] Speaker C: And you get this, the shootout.
And then you get Jonah Hex dying
[01:00:25] Speaker B: to review, be reborn again.
[01:00:28] Speaker A: But he gets shot by the kid, right?
[01:00:30] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:00:31] Speaker A: What happens? But he also murders the kid, right?
[01:00:33] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:00:36] Speaker A: So now how is that the right noise for murdering a Teenager when the
[01:00:43] Speaker B: kid shot Jonah Hex. It sure is.
[01:00:45] Speaker A: Yeah. That's maybe.
Well, in light of current events, I'm going to move on quickly.
[01:00:53] Speaker C: Yeah, so.
But, you know, Jonah Hex actually has a death in comics. That's like a hard stop.
[01:01:04] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:01:05] Speaker C: Like, he died in 1902. You know, like, there's a specific point where he dies.
Now, this is definitely an older Jonah Hex at this point, but this very opening scene makes you question, is there a supernatural aspect to Jonah Hex here?
Like, is he unkillable when he's wearing his.
[01:01:31] Speaker A: And he's wearing his Confederate uniform? Yeah.
[01:01:34] Speaker C: Yeah. And he goes back and forth with that. And honestly, I think a lot of times that tends to be whoever might be writing or drawing choice at the time, because even when he goes into town, he's still wearing the Confederate hat, which I think he's always wore the confederate hat.
[01:01:59] Speaker A: So when he. We get to the next page, he looks very zombie, like on the next page, right?
[01:02:06] Speaker C: Oh, yeah, yeah.
[01:02:09] Speaker A: With the white eyes and. Or undead. We. We should not call him a zombie, as I've learned from Greg over the last few weeks.
[01:02:16] Speaker B: Well, I mean, he's always had that kind of look to him, that. That look of like he's got a.
A mark.
Right. I mean, that's a fair way to assess the situation.
[01:02:27] Speaker A: Well, his face was mangled by a bullet. Yeah.
[01:02:29] Speaker B: So, yeah, but he's been. He's been touched by the death.
[01:02:38] Speaker A: But we get some narrow. We get a lot of narration through this and. And just a couple of highlights from narration. You know, they know he says. You know, they said he'd been cursed for the thing he'd done. He's not doing the narration, by the way, by them crows, by the witching ones, the dying words of the people he'd ended. So, you know, they're telling you something supernatural is going on. I mean, we may not know yet, but there's something happening here.
And what it is ain't exactly clear. There's a man with a gun over there telling me we gotta be.
Yeah, it's time to stop such a good song.
[01:03:20] Speaker C: And you don't even. And you don't actually even know who the narrator is at this point.
[01:03:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:03:25] Speaker A: Don't we get it at the very end? Yeah.
I'm gonna break that thing. I'm coming to your house.
[01:03:36] Speaker B: Like, we had a special request, you know?
[01:03:38] Speaker A: You know, Jason, like, this is why he doesn't give me the code to his front door, because I will go into his house and I will Destroy that.
[01:03:45] Speaker C: Gotcha.
[01:03:45] Speaker B: You will never watch my dogs.
[01:03:50] Speaker A: I would. See, I'm the perfect person to watch your dogs. I'd bring my dog, and then they
[01:03:55] Speaker B: would, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
[01:03:56] Speaker A: My dog would teach your dogs to, like, pee outside. It'd be perfect.
[01:04:01] Speaker B: The only person I will let watch my dogs is Travis Bundy.
There.
[01:04:11] Speaker A: Well, we get back, and we get a really cool scene with Jonah and his horse, and I feel like we are back when Travis Bundy was on the podcast, because in this case, I'm not having nightmares about the horse. I. It's endearing.
[01:04:28] Speaker B: Nice yell.
[01:04:29] Speaker A: The eye.
[01:04:29] Speaker B: Yeah, the eye.
[01:04:31] Speaker A: God, yeah, the eye is there again. Do you see the eye down at the bottom of the page?
[01:04:35] Speaker B: Yeah. It looks like a human eye. Dude, it's looking at you.
[01:04:39] Speaker A: It makes. Well, it's looking at Hex, I think. It's not looking at me. And that's where the connection is. Like, there's a clear connection. Like, this horse knows something is up, but, yeah, still represents, you know, is still loyal to Hex.
[01:04:53] Speaker B: And they're connected.
[01:04:56] Speaker A: They're marching through a cemetery, which I think Jason was pointing out, too. Like, this. It kind of illustrates this weird supernatural thing, right?
And I assume those are the graves of the people he just murdered.
[01:05:10] Speaker C: But see, you go back, and he's wearing the Confederate uniform, and it's like.
And it was a dream.
So are these the people he murdered?
Is he just remembering something that happened in the past?
[01:05:26] Speaker A: And then I'm gonna say, my favorite page in the whole book is the intro page.
The paneling in this page is really cool.
It really drives what you're going to see in the rest of the story. Like, it's a really good preview for everything. So, you know, you don't know yet, but everything you need for the rest of the story is right here.
[01:05:45] Speaker B: Right?
[01:05:46] Speaker A: The rest of the first issue, I should say. And maybe the rest of the story, we don't know yet.
[01:05:51] Speaker B: Pretty solid.
[01:05:53] Speaker A: But everything's right here. Every character you're going to interact with pretty much is right here.
[01:05:59] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, for the most part.
Yeah. Yeah.
[01:06:08] Speaker A: And then we get our stable boy, and Jonah is. And our drunk guy is. Every Western town needs a drunk guy, right?
Including Dan right now with.
I really like my sticker that I put on my cup to come cover up the old word that was here.
[01:06:26] Speaker B: What does the sticker say?
[01:06:28] Speaker A: Oh, it says, like, it's just some little mushroom guys. And they. And the middle guy is going, so, you know, yeah, some fun guys there.
Fun Guys and a not so fun guy. There's like fun guys and a not so fun guy.
[01:06:46] Speaker B: Oh yeah.
[01:06:49] Speaker A: Yeah. I mean it's basically like a bath house. So.
And so we get back into the book here and the stable boy is asking him all sorts of questions. And Jonah's like, just leave it alone.
Not dealing with you right now.
[01:07:14] Speaker B: Stop.
[01:07:16] Speaker A: Stop asking questions.
And the little kid runs into this great big burly dude with suspenders.
Just falls over.
[01:07:28] Speaker C: Actually, I took it that the burly guy smacked him down.
[01:07:32] Speaker A: Oh, did he?
[01:07:33] Speaker B: Oh, whacked him. Hit him.
[01:07:36] Speaker C: It looks like he backed.
[01:07:41] Speaker A: And he's like.
See, I kind of. I think the facial expression was confusing to me because the next panel, the facial expression, it doesn't look like he just got whacked, right? Like it looks like he did something stupid like ran into him.
So maybe. Maybe both happened.
Either could have ran straight into him and then to do was like, get off of me, dummy.
But yeah, I don't think we're supposed to like Big Bad John there.
[01:08:06] Speaker C: No.
[01:08:06] Speaker A: Or whatever his name is. We're just going to call him Big Bad John for now because that seems to fit.
And then Jonah goes into the bar and he goes to bartender is like he. I need a drink.
I need a bottle, actually.
[01:08:21] Speaker B: Yeah, give me a bottle if you got the money.
[01:08:25] Speaker A: And then the.
The.
Really?
[01:08:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:08:32] Speaker A: Like why the cash register? I mean, did you know what that. That's just going to encourage you to play different sounds. This. Jason, do you see what you've unleashed?
[01:08:39] Speaker C: I'm sorry. That's.
[01:08:41] Speaker B: You've unleashed the beast.
[01:08:44] Speaker C: I thought it had died. I didn't know it was actually still around.
[01:08:48] Speaker A: You know. And the thing is, you know, trying
[01:08:50] Speaker B: to edit these out.
[01:08:51] Speaker A: But this is all a cover for what he's done to the Squatcho Man.
[01:08:55] Speaker B: Cover the Squacho Man? Squatch o Man is alive and well. Dan. Squatcho Man's been on vacation.
[01:09:01] Speaker A: You're just distracting people.
[01:09:02] Speaker B: Visiting people all across the nation, doing what he does without hesitation. And I'm sorry that you feel that. It's a procrastination. The Squacho man isn't here for your jubilation in seeing the Squacho man at the Retro Emporium. So you can say Squacho Man, I love you so much.
[01:09:23] Speaker A: When did you start watching 1978? Superstar Billy Graham? Like promos, right? Like you think you're doing Dusty Rhodes. You were not doing Dusty Rhodes. You're doing superstar Billy Graham.
[01:09:36] Speaker B: No, I know, I know.
[01:09:38] Speaker A: No, you don't know.
[01:09:39] Speaker B: I Do know.
I do know.
[01:09:42] Speaker A: Name one other grandbrother.
[01:09:46] Speaker B: All I know is.
All I knew is. All I know is the Righteous Gemstones, Dan. And they do the. They do the Billy Graham. So good.
[01:10:00] Speaker A: Not that Billy Graham.
Oh, we're talking about the wrestler, not the preacher.
[01:10:06] Speaker B: Oh, oh, oh. Well, I mean, it's similar. Similar.
[01:10:08] Speaker A: I mean, admittedly, the 80s Billy Graham, when he came back with the bald head, came out to Jesus Christ Superstar as his entrance music, which my mom was very offended by when I was a child.
It's like, I just don't think a wrestler should come out to Jesus Christ Superstar.
I'm like, mom, do you. Do you know what that play is about? Because I don't think you'd be offended if you knew what the play was, right?
You'd be offended by the play.
You think the play was sacrilegious, right? Like the musical. Not.
Well, Jonah gets down for a drink and the saloon lady of the night.
[01:10:52] Speaker B: Yes.
[01:10:53] Speaker A: Decides that she is going to attempt to make some money and decides against it very quickly after looking at Jonah Haggs.
So why did you play the cash register?
[01:11:12] Speaker B: First because she tried to make money and then it was a wa, wa, wa.
[01:11:16] Speaker A: Yeah, but she didn't get the cash register. That didn't even make sense.
[01:11:19] Speaker B: It was none.
[01:11:24] Speaker A: Side note.
[01:11:26] Speaker B: Yes.
[01:11:28] Speaker A: Side note. Because it's how my brain works.
I watched the first two episodes of Carrie.
Why are they stealing the plot from the original Incredible Hulk television show?
[01:11:40] Speaker B: I don't know, but it's so good.
[01:11:43] Speaker A: Right? But the whole lifting of the car thing.
[01:11:45] Speaker B: Yeah, well, I mean, that, like, is
[01:11:46] Speaker A: the literal plot line for why David Bruce Banner is trying to.
How he's trying to cure the Hulk thing on the TV show, right?
[01:11:54] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:11:54] Speaker A: I mean, I guess all good things come back. And I mean, that was in the 70s, so it's probably okay to bring it back now. But, like, that was a literally replaying of, like, the first couple episodes, right? That's that whole, like, the woman's.
The only difference is she was lifting the car off her.
Was it her brother?
[01:12:12] Speaker B: Her brother, but.
[01:12:13] Speaker A: And she was in. In the Hulk, it was the African American woman lifting the car off or lifting. Pulling the. Lifting the car up so her son could get out of the fire, right? Yeah, but it's literally. It's literally the same scene with the same explanation. I'm like, this is. This is the same exact thing.
[01:12:31] Speaker B: You have to understand that Flanagan pulls from things that he loves from the past to pay homage to the things so that he can play it out in the current so that people who don't know those things can go, wow, this is really good. This is amazing.
And then they can go find out for themselves what he is looking, what they're looking at through the lens of today.
[01:12:53] Speaker A: Well, speaking of pulling from things from the past, I would expect this guy here, the big dude that hit the kid to be walking like two giant bears around with him.
[01:13:05] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[01:13:06] Speaker A: Like big Josh.
Two giant bears from wcw. Yeah. Matt Bourne, who is a terrible person by the way. I should not be advertising him. He was a God awful person.
Doink the clown as well.
[01:13:21] Speaker B: And big Josh, he's just throwing out bad names for you people. Gosh.
[01:13:26] Speaker A: Hey, look, at least I'm not the person that posts green lantern number one and talks about how they got it for $10 at a sale and promotes comics written by pedophiles. So, you know, I mean it's.
[01:13:37] Speaker B: That was.
[01:13:38] Speaker A: I could be doing that out online.
[01:13:40] Speaker B: Yeah, that was. That was on a fan fan site
[01:13:44] Speaker A: that I paid $10 for this $1 book. Congratulations. You paid $10 for a book written by somebody who put child porn all over their computer and then said it's okay to do
[01:13:56] Speaker B: terrible people
[01:13:59] Speaker A: anyway, flipping the page to not that.
So I'm so angry with fandom right now. Let me explain, Dan. Like, I am so excited about November 7th at the grit City comic show because I'm going to interact with actual real human fans that will come talk to us about things. Hopefully we'll be close to Dev again or somebody. Dev's not going, is he?
[01:14:20] Speaker B: I don't know. But we're going to be, we're going to be in a really good lineup of folks.
[01:14:24] Speaker C: So.
[01:14:24] Speaker A: And we'll get to talk to some folks and comics history and have fun of collecting comics.
[01:14:29] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:14:30] Speaker A: And get away from the online toxic fandom that is like I hate the fact that Hayden Sherman makes the teenagers look androgynous. Yeah. What did you want the teenagers to have? Giant. You wanted Adam Hughes.
[01:14:42] Speaker B: Yeah. No. And we want the teenagers to look like teenagers.
[01:14:46] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:14:47] Speaker A: They want Adam Hughes, Jason to draw the Legion. Basically. They want giant breasts everywhere.
[01:14:54] Speaker B: It's make the kids look like kids.
[01:14:57] Speaker A: Yes. Like this.
[01:14:59] Speaker B: Yes.
[01:15:00] Speaker A: So Mr. Walsh. Fantastic. Right? Like Mr. Michael Walsh doing the art here.
This looks like a little girl.
Not over sexualized, not freaky.
And by the way, the woman in the bar also looks like she probably belongs in this town.
Imag Jason. Because one of the only Legion books I have is an alt cover done by one Adam hughes that's worth 900 bucks because it has Supergirl with giant boobs on the COVID Gotcha.
And so you can't buy it, but it was like one of those altcovers and the regular book's worth like less than a dollar and I'll never own this book. And you know, I'm a completist, so it irritates me. And
[01:15:45] Speaker B: he didn't buy it.
[01:15:46] Speaker A: Kind of like when you were talking about the Neal Adams cover on the Jonathan thing. Yeah, it's.
Except Neal Adams is actual artist, right?
[01:15:55] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:15:56] Speaker A: No, Adam Hughes is a really good artist too. I don't want to insult Adam.
Yeah, I, I want to be clear. I'm not insulting Adam Hughes. He does draw large breasted women, but I'm not insulting him. I don't think he's a shitty artist.
But it annoy the fandom that. The fandom that is only out there just to collect that. Yeah, but then I said I would collect the butt issues of Nightwing. So, I mean, I. I don't know how critical I can really be at this point.
[01:16:24] Speaker C: True. That's true. So, you know, two sides of the same coin, right?
[01:16:29] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:16:29] Speaker C: Or something like that.
[01:16:32] Speaker A: Sides of the same. I don't know.
[01:16:33] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:16:34] Speaker A: Would you. What are you doing?
[01:16:36] Speaker C: Is he making popcorn?
[01:16:38] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:16:40] Speaker C: So.
So back to the book.
[01:16:46] Speaker A: This is your lone wolf and cub piece, right?
[01:16:48] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:16:49] Speaker A: Well, we're never getting done.
[01:16:51] Speaker C: You. You, you think it's going to be until you figure out what that spider is up to.
[01:16:59] Speaker B: Oh, damn, baby.
[01:17:01] Speaker A: Well, there's a black. I. I do. I do love some of the hints in this book. So there's a black cat hanging out outside the saloon.
[01:17:07] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:17:08] Speaker A: And if you don't look closely, you're going to miss it. But there's a black cat out there. And black cats, of course, indicate bad luck.
[01:17:16] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:17:16] Speaker A: And they're adorable and fuzzy and they'll like curl up in your lap and.
[01:17:21] Speaker B: But that's true.
[01:17:22] Speaker A: I once had a black cat.
[01:17:24] Speaker B: Black cats are great.
[01:17:25] Speaker A: It was great. But.
The girl is like, it's okay. I don't need a hero. It's the other thing I need. He's like, sure you do. I do.
And he's like, who needs killing, little girl? He says, please listen, I ain't lying. My daddy. He ain't my daddy.
[01:17:47] Speaker C: Yeah. And then you get to see the daddy.
[01:17:49] Speaker A: Yeah. And he is. And she says, like, he's. He's creepy and he's smiling. And then dad is.
Is that. You know, we're talking about. All things become new again.
We Were showing the heckler stuff from last week in the Keith Giffen graphic novel. Is that not a Keith Griffin's Keith Giffen smile face?
[01:18:09] Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
[01:18:10] Speaker A: From the early 90s, late 80s.
That is shadowed and everything. Almost no eyes. That is.
It very much is.
[01:18:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:18:22] Speaker A: And then he kind of transforms back into normal.
I love this panel too. With the, with the flower.
[01:18:30] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. I had to look at it a few times to be like, well, what's going on with that? Because it's so.
[01:18:40] Speaker C: I don't.
[01:18:41] Speaker B: I can't.
It just has that feel to it when you look at it. It's a little foreshadow, a little telling, but it's also a little like, what's going on?
[01:18:54] Speaker A: And then he meets another person in town. So this is kind of like.
I feel like this is like a bad DND campaign where you're just walking through town meeting people.
[01:19:07] Speaker B: Jason and Jason and I have never.
Not bad D and D, but never had encountered things like this in a D and D campaign.
[01:19:16] Speaker C: No, no, they're all.
[01:19:17] Speaker A: They're all awesome and nothing's really happening yet.
That's.
I think that's my problem. I think I've just put my finger on my problem with this book. It's just like Jenna Hex walking through town meeting people.
[01:19:30] Speaker B: I mean, you nailed it, Dan. That's. That is. It's a D and D campaign that you're. You're getting the lineup of everything that's happening day zero.
[01:19:39] Speaker A: Yeah,
[01:19:42] Speaker C: well, I think, I think this.
Honestly, I think this might be a problem with modern comics, because right here you've got a six issue miniseries that.
Would this have been better just.
It's a graphic novel as a.
[01:20:01] Speaker A: Well, would it be better as a four issue mini? Right.
[01:20:03] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:20:03] Speaker A: Did you have to extend it to make it a graphic novel? Because we all know here. Greg, I was just free.
[01:20:12] Speaker B: I need to make that a soundboard.
The.
[01:20:18] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, I think sometimes, like, that's another editorial cut, right? Hey, you've got six issues. You got to tell the story.
Well, what if the story is best in five issues? What if it's best in four and a half issues? Right. Maybe we don't have the walking around town. We progress the story a little bit faster.
[01:20:33] Speaker C: Well, it's funny you're even seeing that now bleed over to premium tv.
[01:20:38] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:20:39] Speaker C: Because think about like, you know, for the longest time, Netflix and all those no commercials. You just pay your subscription. Well, now ads have started slowly slipping into the cheaper version, and so now they're even thinking about, oh, how can we, you know, extend this out? And, you know, we're gonna have to have ads in there, have these ad spots.
[01:21:00] Speaker A: Well, that's fair. But I do think, like, if they want to add two or three more episodes to the next heated rivalry season, that's really okay. Like, okay, I'm okay with that.
And so is. So is. So is Anne Smith the owner of the Retro emporium.
[01:21:16] Speaker B: But if we want to cut to the chase on Carrie.
[01:21:20] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:21:20] Speaker B: I mean, Carrie is.
[01:21:22] Speaker A: I, I. My critique of that show right now is exactly what we've. We're analyzing with this book. Yeah. They are like that.
[01:21:31] Speaker C: That and Crystal Lake are both on my list to watch.
[01:21:34] Speaker A: Oh, the first two episodes of Carrie were good, but it is at a glacial pace.
[01:21:39] Speaker C: Okay.
[01:21:40] Speaker B: It pulls out, but it's like, it. It pulls back.
[01:21:44] Speaker A: It's.
[01:21:45] Speaker B: You're gonna. You're gonna like it when it, when it.
[01:21:47] Speaker A: Well, I'm sure I'll like it. I don't dislike it now, but it is glacial. Like, I'm like, you know, I'm only.
I wouldn't.
It's not a show I'm going to. It's kind of like, to me, it's like the pacing of. What's the Adam Scott show on?
[01:22:07] Speaker C: Oh, Severance.
[01:22:08] Speaker A: Yeah, it's like Severance. I can watch, like, four episodes of that, and then I put it down for, like, two months and then watch another four episodes come back.
[01:22:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:22:16] Speaker A: Because it's so slow. Like, I felt. I love the show.
[01:22:22] Speaker C: I felt that way with the newest season of Ted Lasso.
[01:22:25] Speaker B: Okay, fair, fair.
[01:22:26] Speaker C: Like, I've, you know, watched the first two episodes, and I'm kind of like, okay, that was fine. But, you know, where are we going this season? You know, what's happening.
[01:22:36] Speaker A: Yeah.
And so far, this book, we're, you know, we're just over halfway through it is slow pacing. And, you know, I. I will also say, though, too, this book, people have complained about its pacing, but I am excited, and not just because of the Legion.
[01:22:56] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:22:57] Speaker A: To get to the next issue right. I am dying to get the next issue right. They are leaving me. Each Williamson does a good job.
[01:23:03] Speaker B: You want to know what's going to happen?
[01:23:04] Speaker A: I want to know what's going to happen to these characters. Next issue. Right.
[01:23:07] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:23:08] Speaker A: We're going to flip the page here. So we get back to stable boy.
[01:23:11] Speaker B: That's what I want to know. What's going to happen with the characters that we're meeting in this book.
[01:23:17] Speaker A: I don't really want to know.
[01:23:18] Speaker B: I Do.
[01:23:19] Speaker A: That's my biggest problem with this.
[01:23:20] Speaker B: I mean, that's kind of how I feel about Carrie, too. I mean, like Saul Perez from Sister podcast.
[01:23:26] Speaker A: But I know what happens to Carrie.
[01:23:28] Speaker C: I know.
[01:23:28] Speaker B: We know.
[01:23:29] Speaker A: They've already told me in the show.
[01:23:31] Speaker B: I know, I know.
[01:23:32] Speaker A: In the movie and in the other movie.
[01:23:34] Speaker B: But they do it in a different way, Dan. They do it in a different.
[01:23:37] Speaker A: Right. So you have to build interest in the other characters, and that's what they're not doing in this book. I'm interested in Hex, but I don't give a. About any of the other characters. Yet.
[01:23:47] Speaker B: You don't care about the little flower girl?
[01:23:49] Speaker C: No.
[01:23:49] Speaker B: Oh, shoot.
[01:23:50] Speaker C: See, now, see, I did. I did.
Annie is the only one that I attached to.
[01:23:56] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:23:56] Speaker C: Like Pete, the big bro. Yeah. Okay.
He's your bad guy.
[01:24:02] Speaker A: He's not one dude.
[01:24:04] Speaker C: I kind of like the stable boy.
[01:24:05] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:24:06] Speaker C: He's. He's your Go be your comic relief or whatever. Problem.
[01:24:10] Speaker A: Yeah, he.
[01:24:11] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:24:12] Speaker C: But I'm invested.
I started to get invested in Annie, but then you turn two pages.
[01:24:20] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:24:21] Speaker C: And you're like, okay, what's going on with Danny? So it's one of those things. It's like, you know, almost to the degree, like, it's everybody in this town disposable.
[01:24:36] Speaker A: Yeah. And we've got. And. And what Jason's referring to is we get back to the house, and the spider she's talking about is getting toward her mouth. So she. Back at her house, she's sleeping.
And that weird spider thing that she was mentioning regarding her dad. Right.
I guess I skipped the whole stable boy conversation.
[01:24:58] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:24:59] Speaker A: Which does get better. I do kind of like this. They are building up that character.
[01:25:03] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:25:04] Speaker A: And then she's like, this is creepy. Get out of my mouth. And she runs outside, she gets it away. She says hello, and she sees the husk of her dad, which, by the way, this art is. Is fantastic.
It's very creepy and very scary.
[01:25:24] Speaker B: Super.
[01:25:24] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:25:25] Speaker B: It is not like if you were a kid and you saw that. Like, I mean, honestly, as if I'm
[01:25:29] Speaker A: a Dan and I see that.
[01:25:30] Speaker B: Well, as a kid, I thought my parents were, like, swapped out for, like, robots, because my mom's voice changed when I was like. Because of the medical reasons or whatever. So I was, like, always asking the question, are you a robot? But, I mean, like, I.
[01:25:49] Speaker C: There's.
[01:25:50] Speaker B: There's that thought as a child. Right. Like, what's going on with you? And then you see that in this book. She sees that, and that is real
[01:25:59] Speaker A: to her, you know, watch so many episodes of Small Wonder. Like, you wouldn't have had that issue.
[01:26:04] Speaker B: I. Well, I watched a lot of stuff as a kid that I shouldn't have seen.
I mean, my mom was very young and rented a VCR and got a lot of scary movies at a. And I was at a young age, and she was like, yeah, it's just a video. You're gonna be fine. And maybe watch till the end so that I could be fine with it, not have bad dreams.
[01:26:24] Speaker A: But we don't actually know what happens to Annie yet because the spider comes after her, and it's like, daddy's here.
[01:26:32] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:26:33] Speaker A: And I don't like spiders, so this creeped me out. And, yeah, like, I like regular spiders. I'm not afraid of, like, the little spiders that make webs in my front yard and kill all the flies.
[01:26:43] Speaker B: Big spiders, though. Oh, bad news.
[01:26:45] Speaker A: Once you get to Brown Recluse and up, I am done. We're done with spiders at that point.
[01:26:51] Speaker B: I saw a big spider at the shop the other day, and I was like, big spider.
[01:26:56] Speaker A: Kill it with fire spiders that hide in your clothes and jump on you and murder you. I'm not, like, a big fan of,
[01:27:02] Speaker B: like, the giant bite I have on my leg that I'm like. I don't know what it's from. Probably a big spider.
[01:27:06] Speaker A: Maybe you should go to the hospital.
[01:27:08] Speaker B: I don't know. I'm gonna.
[01:27:09] Speaker A: I'm gonna have health insurance.
[01:27:11] Speaker B: I'm gonna draw a circle on my leg, Dan.
[01:27:13] Speaker C: Okay, Just make sure it doesn't start caving in any. That's what I'm looking at.
[01:27:20] Speaker A: No, that's only his chest, Jason. That's the only part that caves in.
[01:27:24] Speaker B: What? Shut up, Dan.
[01:27:26] Speaker C: Oh, my chest of casing.
[01:27:28] Speaker B: Dan.
[01:27:29] Speaker A: Bro.
[01:27:34] Speaker B: It does feel weird, though.
[01:27:35] Speaker A: That's okay. I was told yesterday you're. You're. You're almost 52. Maybe it's time for that knee replacement.
[01:27:41] Speaker B: I'm like, my hip feels weird again.
Any hip replacement?
[01:27:49] Speaker A: It's weird, too, because Jason. Jason made this point earlier.
So we get the daddies here, and we don't know what's happening in the little girl.
And then Jonah gets back home, and we've seen the Confederate uniform, and this trips me. So I don't get this. So I will say this is something I wanted to know more about when I read the original. Read this through.
He, like, takes an axe and opens up a crate, and boom, there is the uniform with the guns. Yeah.
Again.
[01:28:23] Speaker C: So. So. So, see, I. I'm. I Believe what they're implying here is he's gone John Wick style.
[01:28:31] Speaker B: Oh.
[01:28:32] Speaker C: So I think he's given up his life as a bounty hunter.
Yeah, we're not.
That. That opening scene is straight up a memory.
And now he's like, okay, I've got to go protect this girl.
You know, this girl needs me to kill somebody for.
I'm pulling it out of retirement for the girl.
[01:28:55] Speaker A: Okay, well, we just reviewed this with one Travis Bundy. Are you sensing some similarities here?
[01:29:01] Speaker C: Very much so, yeah.
So. And. And now the difference will be is if the girl's still alive in issue two.
[01:29:15] Speaker A: Yeah.
And then we. We get the kitty. We get the kitty supposedly shot, right?
[01:29:20] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:29:22] Speaker A: And it maybe killed him, but we don't know. Well, do we know who kills him?
[01:29:29] Speaker C: He Know he's a ghost. He.
My understanding is this is one of the ghosts he's haunted by.
[01:29:37] Speaker A: But I guess the question is, who killed. So you said he dies in 1902, right?
[01:29:42] Speaker C: Who? Jonah Hex. Yeah.
[01:29:43] Speaker A: Is there an end story?
Do we know who kills Jonah Hex?
[01:29:47] Speaker C: Yeah, there is. It was in.
Oh, was it Jonah Hex Spectacular?
It was a special issue that came out, and essentially, he was pretty.
[01:30:11] Speaker A: Oh, let me see.
[01:30:12] Speaker C: Let me pull it up real quick.
[01:30:14] Speaker A: I'm just curious, though, Jason, if they're doing a reboot of Jonah Hex here, how crazy would it be if he just got killed by some random kid?
[01:30:27] Speaker C: That's true.
[01:30:29] Speaker A: Like, that's one of those crazy endings that Greg loves to write in the stories.
[01:30:34] Speaker B: I.
What are you talking about?
[01:30:36] Speaker A: I'm not writing anything but, like.
[01:30:38] Speaker B: I'm not writing anything like that right now. Dan, shut your mouth.
[01:30:42] Speaker A: Oh, I did. I wasn't implying that you're writing anything like that right now.
[01:30:45] Speaker B: I'm not.
Thanks a lot.
[01:30:48] Speaker A: I'm just waiting for my script for this new Starlight graphic novel to get started.
[01:30:54] Speaker B: Well, that's not what I'm writing right now. That's not what I was working on on my trip.
[01:30:59] Speaker A: No, you're working on Jason. Did you know what Greg's working on right now?
[01:31:05] Speaker C: No, I do not.
[01:31:06] Speaker A: Well, Travis Webb at Overcast Comics has been working on.
It's like an old Western feel. It's kind of amazing. Yeah, it's like cyborgs meet the West.
[01:31:21] Speaker C: Oh, okay.
[01:31:23] Speaker A: An adventure through time where cyborg parts fly on trains back to the future.
[01:31:31] Speaker C: Oh, nice.
[01:31:32] Speaker A: Yeah, nice.
[01:31:33] Speaker C: Like Westworld meets Back to the Future.
[01:31:36] Speaker A: Yeah, and then the cyborg parts come back, infect everybody, and then you have a movie, and then in the Middle of the movie. Like, a dog dies in the middle, and I get really mad, and then I stop watching.
[01:31:51] Speaker B: I'm writing the part where that doesn't all happen. He gets the dog.
[01:31:59] Speaker A: So he gets the dog in your story so the dog can be murdered later?
[01:32:02] Speaker B: Well, of course.
[01:32:06] Speaker A: How do you feel about dog murder in your stories, Greg?
[01:32:10] Speaker B: I mean, if it's.
[01:32:11] Speaker A: That's right. You heard it right here. Children's author Greg Smith, dog murdering writer.
[01:32:17] Speaker B: Wow.
I'm not murdering the dog. It already happens in the story that is being told. I just have to.
[01:32:25] Speaker A: Children's author Greg Smith blaming other writers for killing dogs in the stories where he accepts dogs being killed.
Wow.
[01:32:33] Speaker B: Dan, I.
[01:32:36] Speaker A: Hey, it is political season right now. I get to paint you in any light I want to. That is how things are happening right now in the world.
[01:32:42] Speaker C: Well, that's fine, but you've got to use AI oh, yeah.
It's a must for your political campaign.
[01:32:50] Speaker A: By the way, did you both see the amazing clip where Josh Hawley sent somebody from Missouri to go to Michigan to Abdul El Sayed's like, town hall. And the guy's like, well, you admit that the Muslim Brotherhood is.
[01:33:05] Speaker B: Is bad.
[01:33:07] Speaker A: And Abdul Said is like, yeah, of course I will, but what's your name again? And why did you choose to ask me that question?
Is there a reason you chose me?
And the audience is like.
And he's like, I mean, why did you choose me? You know, when John Kennedy was running for president, people thought he was going to serve the Pope. And so they kept asking him things like that. Why would you ask me that question?
And the plant is like, blah, blah, blah. And by the way, when the Republicans tell you that the Democrats are sending plants, they're just admitting to what they do.
[01:33:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:33:45] Speaker A: James Talarico is brilliant. Right now. He's like, anything Ken Paxton says is an admission of what he does.
[01:33:52] Speaker C: Right.
[01:33:54] Speaker A: And right now I'm like, anything they say is an admission of what they do. And it's a perfect transition because we have the devil on the last page.
[01:34:02] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:34:03] Speaker B: Oh, smack.
[01:34:07] Speaker A: This is the Antichrist. This is the devil. I don't know.
[01:34:11] Speaker C: It's just a preacher.
Preacher.
[01:34:16] Speaker B: Same difference, right? I mean, come. Hold up now.
[01:34:18] Speaker A: There's some preachers I like right now. Like, I. I want people to vote for the preacher in Kansas and in Texas.
[01:34:27] Speaker C: So.
But no, it. It. It's.
No, it's definitely playing on that fear of the corruption. Well, not fear, but the corruption of systems is coming into town for sure.
[01:34:44] Speaker A: This is some children of the corn right here?
[01:34:46] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:34:47] Speaker B: Oh, the one who walks behind the
[01:34:48] Speaker A: rose chilling the corn is like, I.
I get scared by everything.
So saying that like a horror movie scares me is silly. Children of Scor. Children of the Corn.
I said children of the scorn. Yeah. Children of the Corn scares the out of me. No matter. Every time I watch it isis scare the living hell out of me. So if we're getting more of that,
[01:35:15] Speaker B: I. I mean, honestly though, I mean, it is kind of real when you think about it. All you have to do is put the fear something into people and make them believe it.
And then they will, and they'll do whatever you tell them.
[01:35:27] Speaker A: You know what made Field of Dreams a much better movie?
[01:35:30] Speaker B: What? Field of Dreams.
[01:35:31] Speaker A: If those children would come out and murdered all the baseball players on the field.
[01:35:34] Speaker B: Oh, wow, the corn in the fields.
[01:35:39] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:35:40] Speaker A: Field of Children's of the corn dream.
[01:35:42] Speaker B: Kill you, children.
Kill you.
[01:35:45] Speaker A: How would that be? Field of Children of the Corn Dreams, Phil.
[01:35:51] Speaker B: Children of the Corn dreams. Listen to the screams. Let the body hit the floor. Let the bodies hit the floor.
You sure?
[01:35:59] Speaker A: First off, let's all agree, and I know you won't agree because nobody agrees with me. The Natural is a much better movie than Field of Dreams.
[01:36:09] Speaker B: Actually, I believe that Young Blood is a better movie than both.
[01:36:14] Speaker A: I'm talking baseball movies right now.
[01:36:16] Speaker B: It doesn't matter. We're talking sports movies and sports movies. Youngblood is the best.
[01:36:20] Speaker A: No, I'm talking about baseball movies right now.
[01:36:22] Speaker B: No, we're talking sports movies and sports movies. Young Blood is.
[01:36:26] Speaker A: Yeah, great. You know what? You know what the best baseball movie would say about you right now? Just a little outside. Ball 4. Ball 8.
[01:36:33] Speaker B: Ball 12.
[01:36:34] Speaker A: I don't know how they're laying.
[01:36:35] Speaker B: Hats on bats. Hats on bats, Dan. Hats on bats.
[01:36:39] Speaker C: You know, I always figured Greg would be a Benchwarmers fan.
[01:36:43] Speaker B: Yeah, I am a Formers fan. Yeah. Oh, my gosh. You know, actually, 101.
Do you know the movie? Because I had that on dvd. It is freaking fantastic. But.
[01:36:55] Speaker A: Oh, yes, you remind Jason on last week. On last week's podcast, I gave the origin of the 101 Dalmatians. How they came to be.
[01:37:02] Speaker B: Well, no, I'm not talking about.
[01:37:03] Speaker A: Greg was horrified by this.
[01:37:04] Speaker B: Mr. Oh, what is it, Mr. Mr. 3000.
A movie. I. I was almost. I was almost part of the crew of.
[01:37:15] Speaker C: Oh, that's the.
Who starred in that?
[01:37:18] Speaker B: Bernie Mac.
[01:37:19] Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
[01:37:20] Speaker B: I. I actually, I was. I. I was.
I was on. I was signed up to be on the crew of that movie.
Would have been crewing on that film. And my partner at the time decided that we were moving back to Washington and I had to leave the state of Wisconsin.
[01:37:41] Speaker A: So.
So let's ask the real question that has Jonah Hags.
[01:37:46] Speaker B: Yes.
[01:37:46] Speaker A: Rookie of the year or little Big League?
[01:37:53] Speaker B: Little Big league.
[01:37:54] Speaker A: Really?
[01:37:55] Speaker B: I mean, rookie of the year.
[01:37:58] Speaker C: Well, I'm a Cubs fan, so I'm going to say rookie of the year.
[01:38:00] Speaker A: Okay.
[01:38:01] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, what do you use, Dan? What are you saying?
[01:38:05] Speaker A: I mean, I kind of like the idea of the kid being the executive running the team. You know, I was talking about believability earlier and Orange Cassidy and so what an extremely believable thing.
So, yeah, I mean, I mean, the sandlot. Better than all of them.
[01:38:22] Speaker B: Of course.
[01:38:24] Speaker A: Original Bad News Bears better than all of them.
[01:38:26] Speaker B: Oh, the best.
Bad News Bears go to Tokyo though.
[01:38:30] Speaker A: No. I mean, no. What?
No.
[01:38:33] Speaker B: Get out of here.
[01:38:33] Speaker A: Once you just have Rorschach in the movie, it's not as good anymore.
[01:38:37] Speaker B: All right. Well, yeah, it's true.
[01:38:38] Speaker A: Kelly Lee, great in the first movie, but as it keeps going, so, I mean, it's.
[01:38:43] Speaker B: I, I like, I, I like all the Bad News Bears movies.
[01:38:47] Speaker A: The, the thing is, she should have won the Academy Award for Bad News Bears and not Paper Moon. Fact.
[01:38:52] Speaker B: True, true. I mean, Paperman does good movie.
[01:38:56] Speaker A: Bad news Better is better movie.
[01:38:58] Speaker C: I mean, going back to your earlier baseball, I would have to throw Bull Durham out there.
[01:39:05] Speaker B: So.
[01:39:06] Speaker A: Bull Durham, natural.
[01:39:09] Speaker C: Yeah. I mean, that, that's a tough one. That's a tough one.
[01:39:13] Speaker A: Max Patkin is in Bull Durham, the clown prince of baseball. So that ends it up. Susan Sarandon is in Bul Durham.
But I mean, she's also in Rocky Horror.
[01:39:29] Speaker C: Right.
[01:39:30] Speaker A: It goes up.
No, she's so good in that movie. I don't mean to pick on Susan Sarandon. Susan Sarandon really makes that movie.
That's hard because you've got Robert Redford vs. Susan Sarandon and because Susan Sarandon is the main character of Bull Durham. Crash Davis is not the main character.
[01:39:51] Speaker C: No, no. Yes. It's all Susan Sarandon in that movie
[01:39:56] Speaker A: and she is fantastic.
[01:39:59] Speaker C: And you know, so much of it's filmed in my home state, so, you know, I have a home field advantage there.
[01:40:07] Speaker A: But the whole idea of was there a better player than Babe Ruth that was shot because he was better than Babe Ruth is such an intriguing storyline. Right.
[01:40:18] Speaker C: Okay.
[01:40:19] Speaker B: Honestly. Okay, you guys all make good points, but Trouble with the Curve, Clint Eastwood, a father daughter story that transcends most other stories.
[01:40:29] Speaker A: No.
[01:40:30] Speaker B: Oh, get out of here. I mean, it was a good, it
[01:40:33] Speaker C: was a good movie.
[01:40:34] Speaker B: He's going deaf and he's losing his mind and she comes in to save the day and, and becomes a she. She's picked up all the stuff. She's actually got a career of her own and then takes on everything that her dad is screwing up just so he keep his insurance.
[01:40:50] Speaker A: Yeah. It's like when you stop your whole life and move somebody over the whole weekend and interrupt everything, then you know,
[01:40:55] Speaker B: you know the story, Dan. You know the story, Dan.
[01:40:58] Speaker A: I do know the story.
[01:40:59] Speaker B: Then it's a good story.
[01:41:00] Speaker A: I'm well aware of the story.
[01:41:01] Speaker C: It's true.
[01:41:02] Speaker B: It's real life.
[01:41:03] Speaker A: Oh, it, it is real life.
I'm not saying I think that's my problem because I don't enjoy that, that part of real life. Okay.
[01:41:09] Speaker B: I mean, when I watched it, I was like, damn, this is, this is. I, I know this story. I, I also have done this, but
[01:41:16] Speaker A: Wonder boy, that is all right.
[01:41:19] Speaker C: Scott Bakua's hit major league back to the miners, huh? Or Mr. Destiny.
[01:41:28] Speaker A: Oh, major league back to the Miners.
[01:41:31] Speaker B: Oh, I don't know. Mr. Destiny is pretty solid, though.
[01:41:34] Speaker C: It is.
[01:41:34] Speaker A: But I really, I like all the major leagues and all the major leagues. Yeah, I like them all.
[01:41:41] Speaker B: I mean, they're all really good.
[01:41:43] Speaker A: Should major league back to the minors have been made? No.
Do I still love it? Yes.
[01:41:50] Speaker B: You know what, though? What trumps them all?
[01:41:52] Speaker C: If you're gonna just.
[01:41:52] Speaker B: If you're just gonna. If you're just gonna keep going on this route.
Yeah, I did southbound down.
[01:42:01] Speaker A: All right, well, southbound and down is a TV show.
[01:42:03] Speaker B: Or eastbound and down.
[01:42:04] Speaker A: Eastbound and down, yes. Number one is a TV show. Number two.
[01:42:07] Speaker B: It is.
It should be a movie, though. Like Will make it a seven hour movie.
[01:42:13] Speaker A: Will Ferrell. It's two. It's more than one season, Greg.
[01:42:17] Speaker B: Make it a 15 hour movie. Dan.
[01:42:20] Speaker A: The fact that Ric Flair being a car salesman in the show is.
[01:42:24] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:42:26] Speaker A: Is like the best thing that's ever happened to life. So his last team, the fact that his last team was the Seattle Mariners and he got shelled as a reliever. As a Mariners reliever. Accurate to real life.
[01:42:41] Speaker B: So more.
[01:42:42] Speaker A: We had our one chance at glory. 4. Fuck it. Outs away. And now we're back to where we were.
[01:42:47] Speaker B: So it's story of Jim Moore.
[01:42:50] Speaker A: Let's go, Pilots. I'm rooting for the Seattle Pilots right now. Let's go.
[01:42:53] Speaker B: Oh, of course.
My. That's been a, A talk of the weekend. Who do. Who am I Rooting for brewers. Of course. Of course. The brewers going for the. For those.
Yes, the Pilots. But for those who.
[01:43:08] Speaker A: What are you talking about?
[01:43:09] Speaker B: For the people who don't know.
[01:43:11] Speaker C: Milwaukee Brewers.
[01:43:11] Speaker A: Go look it up.
No, I'm gonna tell you. No team, no franchise that has played in Seattle has ever won the World Series. Do you know why?
Because the two teams that have played in Seattle are the Seattle Pilots, who became the Milwaukee brewers one year later, and the Seattle Mariners. Neither of those teams has won the World Series.
Other fun facts. Five teams have not won the World Series. Two of those teams are in the World Series right now. So the Mariners become part of a more exclusive club next year, one of only four teams that has never won the World Series.
Let's go, Mariners.
We are the saddest baseball fans in the world in Pacific Northwest.
[01:43:52] Speaker B: Walking through the airport in my Mariner's jacket last weekend got so many looks.
[01:43:59] Speaker A: It's just. It's just a destiny of sadness. Well, Jonah Hex might be a destiny of sadness. We were sad when we started, but then we talked about a whole bunch of other things besides Jonah Hex, and I'm happier about the book now.
[01:44:10] Speaker B: Yep, it's a good book.
[01:44:13] Speaker A: It's not a good book.
[01:44:14] Speaker B: I want to read issue two.
How can it not be a good book if you. If it leaves. You want to read issue.
[01:44:20] Speaker A: It did not leave me wanting to read issue two. That was the problem.
[01:44:23] Speaker C: Jason, I do want to read it. I mean, I am curious where it's going, but it's honestly one of those ones where I think I would have enjoyed it more if I would had the full story.
[01:44:35] Speaker A: Yeah, I agree.
[01:44:37] Speaker C: I think the pacing on this is what's on going. Killing it.
[01:44:39] Speaker A: So, I mean, full stop. I would cancel this book if I wasn't already buying the next two.
[01:44:45] Speaker B: So, I mean, so that's. That's three. That's three people buying the next book. There you go.
[01:44:50] Speaker A: No, I already bought the next book. That's the problem.
[01:44:52] Speaker B: That's what I'm saying.
That's three people buying the next book. You should read them.
[01:44:57] Speaker A: You know how the nature of comic books work, Greg. I have to buy my books three months in advance.
[01:45:01] Speaker B: So.
[01:45:01] Speaker A: Yeah, but we're all gonna buy it.
I had picked this up and read it. Would have not read Bosn book. I would have been like, okay, that was nice.
[01:45:10] Speaker C: But see, I'm also not a fair choice because I'm collecting every appearance of John Hex in comics.
[01:45:15] Speaker B: So, you know, okay, well, I'm checking it Out. Dan's already bought it.
[01:45:21] Speaker A: You have not.
[01:45:22] Speaker B: I would have bought it. I. I like it.
[01:45:24] Speaker A: I. I'm. Have you bought these yet?
[01:45:26] Speaker B: I just bought it.
[01:45:28] Speaker A: You did not.
Do you buy Legion books yet? Hard. Hard copy.
[01:45:31] Speaker B: You don't know. You don't know what my.
[01:45:33] Speaker A: I do. Shopping cart looks like we're in Connecticut this weekend. And I know you haven't been to the shop because I had a great
[01:45:38] Speaker B: time visiting my family. Shut up.
[01:45:41] Speaker A: Huh?
[01:45:42] Speaker B: You know, I was going to tell you something fantastic.
[01:45:45] Speaker C: You.
[01:45:45] Speaker B: Now you ruined it, Dan.
[01:45:46] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:45:47] Speaker B: You know, I was going to tell you that they took me to the casino where the, where the Comic Con is in. In Connecticut. And then I was like, huh, What?
[01:45:55] Speaker A: Play the cow game?
[01:45:56] Speaker B: I did. And I won a lot of money.
[01:45:59] Speaker A: Yeah. Well, on that note, I gave it
[01:46:02] Speaker B: to my cousin who got married.
[01:46:05] Speaker A: First off.
First off. Well, Jason is obviously here and we've introduced Jason, but we do have some plugs to do at the end of the show, as usual.
Did you know.
[01:46:18] Speaker B: No.
[01:46:18] Speaker A: That you could find Greg and Ann Smith, who actually runs things she does at the Retro Emporium in Kent, Washington, on Meeker Street. And when I say everybody probably is like, Dan, seriously. On Meeker Street. Turns out Meeker street not that big in Kent.
So if you just drive up and down Meeker street, you will find the Retro Emporium.
[01:46:38] Speaker B: It is. It is smack dab right there across the street from the fantastic Sweet Themes Bakery next to the amazing More Than
[01:46:50] Speaker A: Rocks Rock store and now located far away from Paige Turner Books, which you should never go to.
[01:46:56] Speaker B: Why would you bring that up? We don't talk about them.
[01:46:59] Speaker A: Yeah, well, they're. And I'm banned from going.
[01:47:01] Speaker B: I'm banned from them. I mean, I'll say it right now. I mean, they're.
They have a fantastic selection.
[01:47:07] Speaker A: I can go there. Great.
[01:47:08] Speaker B: No longer. You can go there. I cannot. I'm no longer allowed to go into the store.
And it's. It's a thing. But whatever.
[01:47:17] Speaker A: But you can go to the Retro Emporium and relive your childhood smelling fruit as you walk through the door.
And if you go this month, you can watch Hocus Pocus on the front tv.
[01:47:26] Speaker B: And if you're a listener that lives in the area and you want to go and ask the, the, the proprietor of the bookstore why Greg is not allowed to go into the store, implore
[01:47:36] Speaker C: you to do so.
[01:47:36] Speaker B: Why not?
[01:47:37] Speaker A: Yeah, well, he's such a friendly guy. Just enjoy talking.
[01:47:40] Speaker B: He's such a friendly guy. I know.
I. I just Find it be interesting. I would wonder what the. What the responses would be.
[01:47:48] Speaker A: Well, and of course, you know, if. Jason, have you ever been in a. I actually know you have, so asking you this question is probably silly, but have you ever been in a job situation where, you know, you felt like maybe the employer was, like, discriminating against you?
[01:48:02] Speaker C: Oh, yeah.
[01:48:03] Speaker A: Yeah. Well, unfortunately, you don't live in California, Washington, or very soon New York.
But if you did live in California or Washington and you need some help with that, you could reach out to Jitsu lawyer Paul.
[01:48:18] Speaker B: Nice.
[01:48:19] Speaker A: In fact, he would put a. He could choke out the opposition, choke them out, as well as defeat them in court.
[01:48:25] Speaker B: It's.
[01:48:26] Speaker A: It's pretty amazing when you start to think about it.
[01:48:28] Speaker C: Defeated.
[01:48:28] Speaker A: Yeah. In fact, he has more veins on his arm than I do.
[01:48:32] Speaker B: He's so veiny.
[01:48:33] Speaker A: Yeah.
Well, that's a little weird, but.
[01:48:36] Speaker C: Yeah, that's weird.
[01:48:39] Speaker B: That's cool.
[01:48:40] Speaker A: You just took it across the line to, like, the baths, and we weren't going there, but we were going to airport.
[01:48:47] Speaker B: I was talking like, Mortal Kombat. Have you watched that movie Mortal Kombat 2? They're all veiny. Damn.
[01:48:52] Speaker A: You took it to Capitol Hill and I was.
[01:48:54] Speaker B: No, I didn't. You took it to Capitol Hill. I took it in Mortal Kombat 2. I just watched this weekend. All those guys are veiny while they're
[01:49:01] Speaker C: like, but what about the New Street Fighter?
[01:49:04] Speaker B: Oh, I haven't seen that yet. I want to, though.
[01:49:06] Speaker A: Are they as veiny as Van Hammer was?
Remember that guy? He was terrible.
[01:49:12] Speaker B: Terribly veiny.
[01:49:13] Speaker A: Yeah. Well, if you do need help.
[01:49:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:49:17] Speaker A: You can call 253-656-4475.
[01:49:20] Speaker B: I didn't write it down. What's that number again?
[01:49:22] Speaker A: It's a 253-656-4475.
You'll reach the wonderful Kelly, and she will help connect you to Jiu Jitsu lawyer Paul, who, even if it's something that he can't help with, he can always recommend. Recommend somebody who can.
[01:49:37] Speaker B: That's true.
[01:49:38] Speaker A: Yeah.
That's good stuff. And. And we all already mentioned the book that Overcast has coming out. It was like cyborg parts in the Old west coming to you on a train into the future, right into the
[01:49:49] Speaker B: future, with a story from the past that some guy on this podcast is writing.
[01:49:56] Speaker A: So, yeah, that was the title. Did I get the title right?
[01:49:59] Speaker B: Yeah, you did.
[01:50:00] Speaker C: You did.
[01:50:00] Speaker A: Fantastic.
[01:50:02] Speaker B: Got it all good.
[01:50:02] Speaker A: It's raining cyborg parts in the Old West. They're coming to the future.
[01:50:06] Speaker B: They're The They. Yes. It's raining cyborg parts. In the past. In the future. To the future.
[01:50:11] Speaker A: I love that Jason has no idea what we're talking about right now, which is.
[01:50:14] Speaker B: Oh, he knows.
[01:50:16] Speaker A: Like, it's.
[01:50:18] Speaker B: He's like, I don't know if I
[01:50:19] Speaker A: want Jason because the Kickstarter preview page has been up for like a year now.
[01:50:29] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:50:31] Speaker A: Which is why we talk about the Overcast.
[01:50:33] Speaker B: You want to know what I like about this book that we just read, Dan? And. And Jason, you can chime in at any time, but the one thing I liked about this book that reminded me of anything that Overcast has put out is there are no page numbers, Dan. God, zero page numbers. I was reading this book, trying to keep track of where I was going, and I had to just keep clicking through.
[01:50:56] Speaker A: Well, the important thing I'm going to share right now is there is a new, improved funny book forensics page. In fact, you could go to the brand new funny book forensics website right here.
[01:51:04] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:51:05] Speaker A: Look how beautiful it is.
You can find out the most recent episode. You could hit play and see the video. You could hit play and audio all these recent episodes. Down here, you see all the, like,
[01:51:15] Speaker B: the little clips and stuff.
[01:51:17] Speaker A: If you click on comics, you can see every comic that we've ever covered on the show.
[01:51:21] Speaker C: Oh, wow.
[01:51:21] Speaker B: Wow, look at that, people. You can see all the things we've ever done.
[01:51:24] Speaker A: And as I mentioned before, the shop. And of course, if you love this and you love what you're listening to, you could hit our media kit and you could even talk to us and we're happy to maybe even help out with your comic show. So.
[01:51:36] Speaker B: And if. If they talk to us and they tell us about what they, what they glean from this, this interview, this talk with Jason, what did they get?
[01:51:45] Speaker A: Oh, what they should glean from this episode, which Jason, is that Jason knows a lot about Jonah Hex and we don't.
[01:51:51] Speaker B: He knows a lot about Jonah Hex and we don't. But what did they get in the next week?
[01:51:56] Speaker A: Oh, well, next week, we don't know yet, but if we. If we don't have a guest, we'll be covering.
[01:52:03] Speaker B: I thought they would. I thought they'd be getting a ticket to the GR City.
[01:52:06] Speaker A: Oh, my bad. Sorry if.
Golly. Yes. I still have nine tickets to do the Grid City comic show. Jason, you should just fly out.
[01:52:14] Speaker C: Hang.
[01:52:14] Speaker B: We have eight tickets. We have eight tickets.
[01:52:17] Speaker A: I'm sure, like, it's in your budget just to fly out.
[01:52:22] Speaker B: Can you believe listener Lance has has messaged you.
[01:52:27] Speaker A: Listener Lance message me.
[01:52:28] Speaker B: Oh, he, he. He messaged me.
[01:52:30] Speaker A: Then listener Sean has messaged me. And Sean. Listener Sean already had the ticket.
[01:52:34] Speaker B: I told Ms. Lester.
I told listener Lance to message you.
[01:52:39] Speaker A: Well, good news. If you want to go to Grid City Comic Con and you want me just to eat, eat the tickets I bought for $5 a piece, you can buy a ticket for $10 before the show. So that could actually go to further support the show. So that's not a bad thing.
[01:52:50] Speaker B: Bam. I like that.
Give the show some money.
[01:52:53] Speaker A: Yeah.
But you could also take a ticket.
Ticket.
[01:52:58] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:52:59] Speaker A: And you know, if, if, if by chance, you live in Greensboro, North Carolina, the favorite place for Jim Cornett to bring the Midnight Express with the T tennis racket and champion himself around the Greensboro arena.
[01:53:14] Speaker C: The. The only place where the undertaker and Sting had a match.
[01:53:18] Speaker A: There you go.
[01:53:19] Speaker B: This arena has been burned out.
[01:53:21] Speaker A: Mean Mark Calloway.
[01:53:22] Speaker C: Yep. Me, Mark Callaway and Sting had a dark match in Greensboro right before he jumped ship to the Fed.
[01:53:28] Speaker A: Yeah. As he should have because Mean Mark Calloway was a good. Yeah, that was no good. As was Oz. Oz slash Vinnie Vegas.
[01:53:37] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:53:38] Speaker A: And all things that happen in Greensboro.
[01:53:41] Speaker C: Was it the Diamond Stud?
[01:53:43] Speaker A: The Diamond Stud, yeah. That was after he was Scott hall, heavyweight champion in the awa. And then he was the Diamond Stud hanging out with Diamond Dallas Page. And then Diamond Dallas Page got max muscle, who also didn't. Didn't do so well.
Terrorizing. Of course, that was the northeastern version of Hunter Hurst Helmley, Triple H. But he was John Paul Levesque in wcw.
In wcw.
So, yeah, I mean, not that I'm just firing off my wrestlers, but you were testing me. See, now the real question is for you.
Who was Lord Steven Regals? Which famous pro wrestler who recently passed away was Lord Steven Regal's original manager before Jeeves?
[01:54:37] Speaker C: Ooh,
[01:54:41] Speaker A: he was Sir William. That is your hint.
Famous Memphis wrestler went against Jerry the King Lawler a lot in Memphis.
Australian superstar.
Superstar Bill Dundee.
[01:55:01] Speaker C: That's that. That's a deep pool. That's a deep pool.
[01:55:04] Speaker A: Sir William. And I believe.
Let's see. It was Earl of Eaton. Yes.
[01:55:14] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:55:14] Speaker A: They turned Bobby Eaton of the Midnight Express into the Earl of Eaton, which was the stupidest thing in the world, but.
Yes. So there's a poll for you.
I know my wcw. I know my Atlanta wrestling. There we go. Or should I say Greensboro, North Carolina wrestling.
[01:55:31] Speaker C: Yeah.
[01:55:31] Speaker A: Charlotte was the original hub before Atlanta.
[01:55:35] Speaker C: Fuer talks about it all the time.
[01:55:39] Speaker A: Yep. And Greensboro Alligators down. If you all don't know the history of wrestling Greensboro is, Is it?
[01:55:49] Speaker C: Oh, yeah, I, I, My dad would tell me stories about them going and seeing matches before I was born. And just like every other weekend, something was coming through Greensboro. All these big names that, you know, we heard about. So I can't tell you how many times they saw flare, dusty roads or something like that. So.
[01:56:11] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. The Four Horsemen doing interviews at Greensboro. Jim Cornette still talks about green Greensboro on his podcast.
[01:56:18] Speaker C: Yep. Have you, have you ever read the comic book story of Professional Wrestling? I have.
[01:56:23] Speaker A: It's right by me.
[01:56:24] Speaker C: Okay.
[01:56:25] Speaker B: I have an hour back there. Maybe I need to.
[01:56:27] Speaker A: I say it's right behind me, but I, I don't. I should be able to pull these things off the shelf when I announce that, Right? Yep.
It's back here somewhere.
[01:56:37] Speaker C: It's, it's a fun read if you're a wrestling fan. That's a fun read. So.
[01:56:41] Speaker B: And like, growing up, my dad was a big fan of Hacksaw because Hacksaw is the northeast guy. So, you know, like, like, it was.
[01:56:52] Speaker C: What's funny is always growing up, I always got Hacksaw mixed up with the actor who played in Bloodsport as the friend.
[01:57:03] Speaker B: Oh. Because it did look similar.
[01:57:06] Speaker C: Yeah. I'm like, is that Hacksaw?
[01:57:08] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah.
[01:57:10] Speaker C: Now wrestlers are in all the movies. Yeah.
[01:57:12] Speaker B: It's true. It's true. I mean, like.
[01:57:14] Speaker A: And they're the same. They have the same character.
[01:57:17] Speaker C: Ex.
[01:57:18] Speaker B: Yeah, they, they wrapped that same character.
[01:57:21] Speaker A: John Cena is the voiceover for Honda. Like, what the.
[01:57:26] Speaker C: He's got to do something now that he's retired.
[01:57:28] Speaker B: Well, he. And they.
[01:57:29] Speaker A: No, he's the voice on the Honda commercials now.
[01:57:31] Speaker B: That's so weird. Cut it for movies, you know. So he's not doing films.
[01:57:37] Speaker A: Well, it's because James Gunn didn't give us another season of Peacemaker. Put him on the weird planet. And
[01:57:46] Speaker C: they're coming back. They say maybe, they say if, If CBS allows it.
[01:57:54] Speaker B: Allows it. Well, let's see it.
[01:57:56] Speaker C: And I'm kind of worried about what's going to happen my Star Trek and all that.
[01:57:59] Speaker A: That.
[01:57:59] Speaker C: So.
Wait.
[01:58:01] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:58:02] Speaker B: You and Dan and me alike.
[01:58:04] Speaker C: Woke truck.
[01:58:05] Speaker A: We can't have woke truck, dude. Track is people that woke track been woke forever.
[01:58:14] Speaker C: People who call it that don't know what Star Trek was.
[01:58:17] Speaker B: I know. They just don't know. They just told show about the future
[01:58:21] Speaker A: where everybody is together in a utopia.
[01:58:24] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:58:24] Speaker B: Huh. I don't get the concept.
[01:58:26] Speaker A: I don't get it.
[01:58:29] Speaker C: I need to finish Brand New World.
[01:58:31] Speaker A: So here we go. Capitalism. Here we go.
[01:58:35] Speaker C: Here we go.
[01:58:37] Speaker B: Huh?
[01:58:38] Speaker A: What? Star Trek is all about capitalism.
[01:58:40] Speaker B: It's true. But, I mean, you know.
[01:58:43] Speaker A: Yeah, it's with the Ferengis.
[01:58:44] Speaker C: We do have the Ferengi.
[01:58:45] Speaker A: Yeah.
[01:58:46] Speaker B: Yes.
You have accepted the deal. Damn. You've accepted the deal.
[01:58:52] Speaker A: The. Well, I mean, if you get into the Rules of Acquisition, you would know exactly how the Trump administration runs.
[01:58:59] Speaker B: Of course.
[01:59:00] Speaker A: That's why all women should not wear clothes.
[01:59:03] Speaker B: Oh, shit.
[01:59:05] Speaker A: I mean, it's just like him on the. Just like him hosting, like, Miss USA or whatever.
[01:59:10] Speaker B: I didn't know.
[01:59:11] Speaker A: Yeah. So it's. You had no idea. You did not have no idea how
[01:59:15] Speaker C: close you were or picking a press secretary.
[01:59:19] Speaker B: Oh, my
[01:59:21] Speaker A: Qualifications? Speaking. No. Are you blonde and skinny? Yes.
[01:59:26] Speaker B: Oh. Oh.
[01:59:28] Speaker A: Are you an attorney or a lawyer?
As somebody who's working on becoming a lawyer.
That lady crazy. No, I cannot go to court and do an opening because I don't. I don't have a.
I have not passed the bar exam, and nor do I get to take it for, like, three more years.
[01:59:52] Speaker B: Gotta get those tests done, man.
Keep doing those tests.
[01:59:56] Speaker C: Yep.
[01:59:56] Speaker A: Yeah, she went to Pepperdine, so that says everything.
[01:59:59] Speaker B: Anyway, that's an acting school.
[02:00:01] Speaker A: Well, we are off the. We have now jumped. Officially jumped the shark. So we should probably wrap this thing up. But thank you for joining us on this episode of Funny Books. Jason, thank you so much. And hopefully you learned about some Jonah Hex and some other fun things, too, along the way.
And we'll see you next week. Very likely covering absolute Batman 6, unless we find somebody to fall into our podcast and we talk about something else.
[02:00:22] Speaker B: Beefy Batman.
[02:00:23] Speaker A: Yes. Big beefy Batman. Phil Jimenez, if you're out there. Big beefy Phil. Next time in New York. Okay, bye, everyone.
